      I don't recommend you to do what you saw in this video unless existing roofing surface as sound as it is here and it's slope is a little bit steeper.
      The installers did not pay good enough attention to overlap seems, besides should use a heat- gun to weld together.
      I recommend you to find a roofer with experience and install a torch-down modified roof on your flat roof otherwise you can end up with more problems than you bargained for.

    Finally, a YT video with American contractors demonstrating the process, using materials available in the US market! I’m not necessarily “Made in America” for domestic products sake- just for some reason all the YT videos I get are from UK! I am gearing up to tackle my first EPDM garage very low slope roof. Joists, sheathing and roofing all gone south.

    All you wanna be's give him a break! You know this man put a lot of confidence in people who needed an answer to their roof issue. He made it look easy and very entertaining.
    You guys know dam well this roof may never leak. He did some things you called out right away without remembering that the rain was coming. How would you have sealed that edge? By torching it! Wrong! He did it right cuz he had to come back to it.
    Good job, Ol man.

    This looks like a potentially AWESOME product. Clearly it has ease of APPLICATION. Next test is PERFORMANCE (i.e., no leaks) and then LONGEVITY. (Those are the three test and the final TEST or issue is PRICE.) $2 psf is very tolerable if the performance is good and the longevity is long.

    Sorry it was not a bad try for doing yourself but it was inproper installation. As a roofer for 25 year I'll tell you what you did wrong. Before you lay out the base you have to apply primer which some roofer call glue, the second thing you did wrong was when you installed the cap sheet you have to stagger it from the base so the laps don't land on the same spot you had to cut the first roll of cap down the middle but I would have cut was the base so I could start with a full roll of the cap the way you did it if one of the laps fail the lap underneath it could fail to because of the trapped water. I don't know where you live but if you get winter weather that will be an issue.

    • @migueldefreitas1367
      @migueldefreitas1367 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Your installation on the pipe is wrong you are supposed to install a cone over the pipe then put a piece of base down on the cone then put you cap on and it would be in 2 piece s so it wouldn't look like garbage you lay out a piece to pass the pipe cut around it the next piece 6 inch overlap the other way on the pipe and it's good to go and looks nice too and don't forget to use asphalt primer on the cone

    • @migueldefreitas1367
      @migueldefreitas1367 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You didn't need to you plastic cement on the seams to make it watertight all you had to do was pass you roofing touch on the seams

    • @migueldefreitas1367
      @migueldefreitas1367 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Allsand is meant as a last resort of large pipes that they don't make cone inserts for not a wash room pipe and your wash room vent pipe you should have risen it up that cap comes off and you should have built it up with 2 layer of 2by4 and flash it in with your base and cap sheet it you live in an area where it snows you are going to have problems

I am about to venture into doing a roof in a commercial property of mine after I got quoted a ridiculous amount of money to either repair or install a new roof on a 4500 square feet roof top. On your video looks like to just put the new roof membranes atop the old roof. I was under the impression that the old membranes or old roof had to be removed? Please advice. Thank you very much . Most counties of the USA allow a max of 2 layers to a flat roof (check with YOUR a county building Dept). After that you have to remove the old down to the plywood strata. Also, roofers comments indicate and 80 lb roller is needed to rollover the material.

      I think that's kind of the idea given the title of the video. It's the old saying in business... "you can have it fast, right or cheap... and u can only pick 2." This was fast and cheap, not necessarily "right" according to pro-roofers. BUT, for a homeowner w a bad leak who is desperate for a fast & inexpensive solution (that doesn't necessarily need to last 10 years) this video is semi-helpful.
      I don't even have $2 to spend per square foot so I'm totally screwed. Was considering using 4x8 coroplast boards ( only cuz i have like 100 sheets just sitting in my garage) to go over the current roof (glued down). Then i want to tape the seams with EPDM tape and coat the entire surface with expoxy resin. Then put on new perimeter flashing. I realize I'm going to create more issues but I'm stuck and SOMETHING must be done ASAP. Unless some roofers want to donate their labor AND materials, I'm on my own. Water is a sinister foe!

    What causes the granules to come off a torch down roof like that? Have a 5 yrs old roof, has lost considerable granules, they clog the scupper box which requires us to clean it out 2x a year. We are going to have to silver coat soon otherwise the roof will be too exposed to UV. It's nuts for a roof to start failing that quickly but from talking to supply house, granules coming off is becoming more and more common

    Where do you purchase the materials

    Great video.... I see 2 problems
    1: you always have to cut your first run of S A base in half alway. To prevent a lap on lap Meaning when you run your cap sheet you're gonna have a lap on top of the other lap thats not good . Cutting your first run in half prevent this .
    2 : You need to use an 80 pound roller . The roller is used to remove any air pockets that may be trapped in between the materials. In the summer when its hot the gasses starts to build up in the pockets causing the material bubble up or causing the material to separate in time .

    I have a torch down roof with leaks. The rolled roofing has white gravel on top. Can I patch over this white gravel roofing? Seems that the patched of new roofing won’t adhere to the old roofing with the white gravel

    • @garrett3113
      @garrett3113 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes it will if you have the right materials. Some are used for adhering the cap sheet and some are used to flash. Make sure if there is metal to get some primer first. Get the quick prime and you can flash right away and also get the white granules to cover your patch and if you got the right stuff your repair should look like it was still brand new haha

    I have been roofing for 25 years. That type of roof is not made to be installed over an existing roof without an ISO panel or clean sub. It also needs to be rolled down with an 80 lb roller to bond materials. It specifically tells you not to use torch or flame. You are supposed to use a hot air gun. Its not a torch down system. It will def be a problem

    • @Loonypapa

      TopShield SBS. Not only is the base layer required, but you're not supposed to install the system directly onto an existing roof. Good product, cheapo installation.

    Why are you laying the runs across the roof? Why no lengthways? Plus, would it not be better to have done the flat roof first, then the parapets, to achieve proper weathering?

    Just curious, why not the first Base sheet layer? In your other videos I see that you put a Base down and then the sticky second base layer before the cap sheet. I am going to do a mod bit roof just like this video with the self adhesive. Thanks so much for your info guys...you are going to save us lots of dough!

    I agree with Steven Gee. Also, you should NEVER run ur base seams within a minimum of 8 inches from ur cap seams. He is pretty much right on top of the base seams. That ruins the whole point/value of having a 2 plied roof. Now it’s basically just really thick single plied roof. JOKE!
