Those speculations are truly disturbing, it’s as they WANT Taylor to have a raging addiction so they can use it against her. I have so many issues with this, mainly 1) speculation on anyone’s health is just rude 2) substance abuse is NOT a personal shortcoming and is a horrible disease that shouldn’t be wished on anyone! Mind you, this was in a long thread that had devolved into how she doesn’t actually sell out, but gives tickets away and isn’t that popular, and doesn’t write any songs herself. I had just seen an article with the tour stats, and shared the link. That was it. The insane comments and messages I got were too much. I left a few days later. just a lot of negative people who thrive in negative environments.

I’m not a fan of TS but I am against people berating and mocking someone for potentially having an addiction. It’s not a good thing to speculate on, and if she did in fact have these addictions that’s not a character flaw (and I’m sure she has other flaws) but a serious and potentially fatal disease. It might seem insignificant but it’s these types of conversations that intensify the stigma that stops so many people (not just TS) from getting help. It's the assumptions based on a parasocial relationship, that I find disturbing. If you don't actually know someone IRL, it's not a good idea to spread misinformation. It's just online bullying.
I’ve been a lurker on that sub on occasion for a while, and it seems like a lot of the people there are former swifties who are struggling with the complexities of a broken down parasocial relationship. A lot of the posts I’ve seen sound like heartbroken fans who feel like they don’t have a safe space to express their emotions and conflicting opinions about a currently inescapable superstar with a really powerful fan base. I’ve seen the brigading that the swifties do across multiple platforms, and it makes sense that people are in search of a safe space to express their complicated feelings without getting bullied for it. Granted, the existence of a parasocial connection to a pop star (whether positive or negative) is indicative of some form of psychological unease, so to me, it’s kind of to be expected that the “unhinged” commentary is going to emerge. When you combine the complex relationship with Swift (as her former fans) with the overall psychological affect of parasocial behavior, it makes sense that, at some point, the conversations have devolved into toxic snarking. These people are literally going through a break-up with one of the most popular and exposed celebrities in the world, both online and off. I can imagine it’s a bit of a maddening experience for them. I have some empathy for them in that sense. But, at the end of the day, this kind of complex psychological problem should be addressed with a professional who can provide concrete steps to heal this unique kind of heartbreak. And spreading mean words, especially towards someone who is providing perfectly valid critique of recent posts, isn’t doing anyone any good. I hope psychologists will do some thorough research and investigation into the rise of parasocial relationships with celebrities, especially online. To me it illustrates a new form of psychological coping strategies as a result of our current climate of distrust in institutions, late-stage capitalism and the overall collapse of the social contract on the internet. Anyone from that sub who is reading this comment: I genuinely feel empathy for you but I also want to remind you that healing happens away from the keyboard. You don’t always have to document your feelings on the internet, especially if it’s unkind in nature. Go punch a pillow, scream in the forest, and try to find some solace in the world around you, the internet probably isn’t going to help you much. And maybe someday, if we choose to vote in our own interest and demand proper funding of our social programs, our mental healthcare system will be able to handle this huge influx of complex psychological phenomena that have evolved as a response to everything that happens online. Until then, we’re kind of on our own. So just try to take care of yourself and show yourself and others kindness, online and off.

Snark subreddits are such an interesting phenomenon. They usually start with a group people saying ''I can't criticise x/y/z without ppl attacking me, so I need my own place to vent'', I know this because I've been in a snark sub from its beginning. But gradually, these subs literally become what they hate where, not hating on x/y/z for the most inane reasons is frowned upon. You HAVE to hate, you can't stop hating if you're part of a snark sub, it's how the sub lives and breathes.

I came across a snark page talking about an influencer whose husband died by suicide, the basically blamed her for causing his death with her lifestyle and when someone called them out, they said "they are just trying to hold her accountable". For what exactly? she was literally mourning the death of her husband an the father of her kids but to these people it was just a snarky conversation. I don't understand how hateful comments about someone means "holding them available" and I guess, I will never know.

It was huge news (like actual news, not pop culture gossip) in Europe. two teenagers had serious plans of a terrorist attack at the taylor swift concert in Vienna, so she had to cancel them. people only found out shortly before the concert was supposed to happen and were devastated. this sub criticized her for not apologizing/putting out a statement fast enough (she waited until the end of the European leg of her tour).

i think reddit is a cool social media because of the fact you can go to spaces dedicated to your interests, but it also means you can end up in more echo-chamber like spaces and take any outside flack personally. I have been a fan of Taylor Swift’s music since her first album was released. (I’m 29.) I go through periods where I am completely exhausted by the overexposure, because I am not a ~stan~ and don’t care about her as a person, so I will deliberately avoid anything about her. I’ve gone entire years without paying any attention to what she’s doing, simply because I didn’t want to. The fact that the people who run this sub seem completely incapable of understanding that you /can/ avoid Taylor Swift if you want to is just… beyond me. Like, they are spending multiple hours a day raging about Taylor while following everything she does, and they legitimately believe that the reason that they’re doing this is because they can’t escape her. It’s really not that hard when you’re not obsessive!!! But they are obsessive!! It’s so weird!!

I've been a fan for years and I've always thought her birthday was Sept 13th,1989. I recently found out it is actually in December. When used to lurk on reddit, I said it is silly to say a celebrity is being shoved down your throat when you are actively participating in a pop culture subreddit and I was downvoted. I only use IG and TH-cam and guess what, I only see things about Taylor when I actively watch her channels or check Taylor Nation. I can literally click not interested on IG and I will stop getting recommendations about Taylor Swift. My YT front page and my IG explore page is literally food and natural hair styles because those are what I watch all the time. The algorithm gives you what you feed it, this is common sense.

I have found a lot of community through that sub but I have to say I have always hated when it divulged into weird body shaming or hate over things that don’t matter. As a swiftie that likes to defend Taylor (sometimes too much), this whole saga just opened my eyes at how stupid I sound. Yes, not the haters, ME! The "but you forgot..." argument is something that I use a lot and to see other people doing it just made me realize that wow, I'm just wasting my time because yeah what I said is true but people are really just reacting to what they see and they're gonna call it what it is. I’m not a fan of TS but I am against people berating and mocking someone for potentially having an addiction. It’s not a good thing to speculate on, and if she did in fact have these addictions that’s not a character flaw (and I’m sure she has other flaws) but a serious and potentially fatal disease. It might seem insignificant but it’s these types of conversations that intensify the stigma that stops so many people (not just TS) from getting help.

I’ve been a lurker on that sub on occasion for a while, and it seems like a lot of the people there are former swifties who are struggling with the complexities of a broken down parasocial relationship.
A lot of the posts I’ve seen sound like heartbroken fans who feel like they don’t have a safe space to express their emotions and conflicting opinions about a currently inescapable superstar with a really powerful fan base. I’ve seen the brigading that the swifties do across multiple platforms, and it makes sense that people are in search of a safe space to express their complicated feelings without getting bullied for it.
Granted, the existence of a parasocial connection to a pop star (whether positive or negative) is indicative of some form of psychological unease, so to me, it’s kind of to be expected that the “unhinged” commentary is going to emerge. When you combine the complex relationship with Swift (as her former fans) with the overall psychological affect of parasocial behavior, it makes sense that, at some point, the conversations have devolved into toxic snarking.
These people are literally going through a break-up with one of the most popular and exposed celebrities in the world, both online and off. I can imagine it’s a bit of a maddening experience for them. I have some empathy for them in that sense.
But, at the end of the day, this kind of complex psychological problem should be addressed with a professional who can provide concrete steps to heal this unique kind of heartbreak. And spreading mean words, especially towards someone who is providing perfectly valid critique of recent posts, isn’t doing anyone any good.
I hope psychologists will do some thorough research and investigation into the rise of parasocial relationships with celebrities, especially online. To me it illustrates a new form of psychological coping strategies as a result of our current climate of distrust in institutions, late-stage capitalism and the overall collapse of the social contract on the internet.
Anyone from that sub who is reading this comment: I genuinely feel empathy for you but I also want to remind you that healing happens away from the keyboard. You don’t always have to document your feelings on the internet, especially if it’s unkind in nature. Go punch a pillow, scream in the forest, and try to find some solace in the world around you, the internet probably isn’t going to help you much.
And maybe someday, if we choose to vote in our own interest and demand proper funding of our social programs, our mental healthcare system will be able to handle this huge influx of complex psychological phenomena that have evolved as a response to everything that happens online. Until then, we’re kind of on our own. So just try to take care of yourself and show yourself and others kindness, online and off.

They usually start with a group people saying ''I can't criticise x/y/z without ppl attacking me, so I need my own place to vent'', I know this because I've been in a snark sub from its beginning. But gradually, these subs literally become what they hate where, not hating on x/y/z for the most inane reasons is frowned upon. You HAVE to hate, you can't stop hating if you're part of a snark sub, it's how the sub lives and breathes.

I came across a snark page talking about an influencer whose husband died by suicide, the basically blamed her for causing his death with her lifestyle and when someone called them out, they said "they are just trying to hold her accountable". It was huge news (like actual news, not pop culture gossip) in Europe. two teenagers had serious plans of a terrorist attack at the taylor swift concert in Vienna, so she had to cancel them. people only found out shortly before the concert was supposed to happen and were devastated. this sub criticized her for not apologizing/putting out a statement fast enough (she waited until the end of the European leg of her tour).

i think reddit is a cool social media because of the fact you can go to spaces dedicated to your interests, but it also means you can end up in more echo-chamber like spaces and take any outside flack personally. I have been a fan of Taylor Swift’s music since her first album was released. (I’m 29.) I go through periods where I am completely exhausted by the overexposure, because I am not a ~stan~ and don’t care about her as a person, so I will deliberately avoid anything about her. I’ve gone entire years without paying any attention to what she’s doing, simply because I didn’t want to.
The fact that the people who run this sub seem completely incapable of understanding that you /can/ avoid Taylor Swift if you want to is just… beyond me. Like, they are spending multiple hours a day raging about Taylor while following everything she does, and they legitimately believe that the reason that they’re doing this is because they can’t escape her.
It’s really not that hard when you’re not obsessive!!! But they are obsessive!! It’s so weird!!

When used to lurk on reddit, I said it is silly to say a celebrity is being shoved down your throat when you are actively participating in a pop culture subreddit and I was downvoted. I only use IG and TH-cam and guess what, I only see things about Taylor when I actively watch her channels or check Taylor Nation. I can literally click not interested on IG and I will stop getting recommendations about Taylor Swift. My YT front page and my IG explore page is literally food and natural hair styles because those are what I watch all the time.

Fully transparent here- I’m having mixed thoughts.
I’m a former swiftie that joined this subreddit as a safe place to talk about her very problematic behavior. I have found a lot of community through that sub but I have to say I have always hated when it divulged into weird body shaming or hate over things that don’t matter.
It does feel like one of the only safe places to criticize her but I also agree with D’Angelo on a lot of the things he is saying

I am a swiftie and the question i ask myself is: why people need to make up stories when you have a lot of real reasons to criticize her? Shes a billionaire, she uses her jet to go to the kitchen, she dated Matty of all people. Being a fan is not being blind. And most Taylor haters know more about her than me, and i'm a fan for more than 10 years. They are unhinged, its the only explanation.
And not to use whataboitism but she's not even in the top jet user 😭
They all just wanna hate on her so they run to twitter and just take whatever talking point no matter how wrong
And in the end they make it hard even for us fans to criticize her bc they made criticizing seem so irrational for everyone

As a swiftie that likes to defend Taylor (sometimes too much), this whole saga just opened my eyes at how stupid I sound. Yes, not the haters, ME! The "but you forgot..." argument is something that I use a lot and to see other people doing it just made me realize that wow, I'm just wasting my time because yeah what I said is true but people are really just reacting to what they see and they're gonna call it what it is.
I know that nobody is perfect and Taylor makes mistakes too, but as another comment perfectly pointed it out, sometimes valid criticism against Taylor gets attached to misogyny and insults. And while that is a problem, I can't just point out the misogyny and completely ignore the valid criticism. In fact, D'Angelo in both videos convinced me that talking about these criticisms is actually a good thing. I just never realized that people are mostly calm about it.
Everyone online (especially Twitter) always make it seem like a morality issue. You should either treat her like a Goddess or literally Satan. But this video opened my eyes to the neutral swifties. And let me you how shocked I am when I realized that I agree with these criticisms. I was just so used to all the insulting comments attached to it, which is why I defended her so much. But you can still be a huge fan while acknowledging these criticisms, which is something Twitter or that subreddit will never understand. But I do so now.

Props on gleaning some insight from all this discourse. The power of online university, am I right? Figuring out how to criticize and analyze definitely has a learning curve to it but is definitely worth the effort - both for your own sake and those around you.
Also echoing the previous comment - Swiftologist is an excellent channel for analytical pop culture content (and while I vehemently disagree with some of his takes, but he’s always well researched and I can see where he’s coming from - plus that’s the fun of an intelligent discussion, isn’t it? That doesn't mean at all trans people are predisposed to those actions, just like how a lot of shooters being white doesn't mean all white people are homicidal. People just like using a single example to represent an entire demographic cause it's easier than focusing on the behaviors instead. It is also incompatible with their own double standards, like with the people who hate Swift cause of her being a powerful woman, they prolly don't care how other billionares are addicts/ abusing their power, so long as they're men.

This is deeply entertaining as someone who is never beating the Swiftie allegations but also knows Tsylor Swift is just a flawed person within a flawed system like all of us (plus a billion or so dollars). We all have music and people we dislike and that's fine! But one thing I cannot imagine is how miserable I'd have to be to build an entire community around hating something or someone. You hit the nail on the head with this just being the other side of parasociality.

God I saw that post in real time and there were so many racist and homophobic comments about him that kept getting deleted. That’s probably one of the main reasons it was locked. Calling someone a N-Word or an F-Slur, is not a critique (or okay in general)
