  • The scarcely believable story of how the launch TV for the Nissan Almera actually sabotaged it's sales.. despite this it bravely fought back.... until a final killer blow was struck!!

Nissan Pulsar was always popular in Australia. It offered good value and quality and was priced only a little higher than Korean competition. Yes it was dull but it was easy to drive. Not many of them on the road these days.

I didn't think the exterior styling was dull, it was attractive and sharp. The later face-lift version wasn't so clear looking, especially with the odd looking headlights and amber Indicators.

Despite the way it drove, (which was pretty good) the press did seem to take an instant dislike to the looks

Offen the case, I know Mr Lloyd likes them, especially the one from One Foot In The Grave, which still looks current in a crazy way if you watch the later episodes.

My parents had a snot green coloured one back in the day. As a kid I always got horrendously travel sick in that car

I owned a 2002 Nissan Almera a little over a year ago. By far the worst car I have ever driven, so unbelievably underpowered and slow, to the point where it was dangerous. It got side swiped by a HGV on the M1 and was sent to the scrappers. Credit where credits due, it took a hit from a HGV at 60 MPH very well, and all 3 of us in the car at the time were completely fine.

Sorry, not to be picky, but you've got a picture of the N13 Nissan Sunny (N13 Nissan Pulsar in Australia) when saying the N14 Nissan Sunny and then moving to the N15 Nissan Almera @ 1:46.
The N12, N13, N14 and N15 Nissan Cherry/Nissan Sunny/Nissan Almera, were sold as the Nissan Pulsar in Australia, even the N16 Nissan Almera was sold as the N16 Nissan Pulsar here. Fun Fact - Nissan GB exported the N16 Nissan Almera 5dr hatch to Australia and New Zealand as the N16 Nissan Pulsar. The sedans were imported from Japan.
The N15 Nissan Almera (N15 Nissan Pulsar in Australia), was also ridiculed by Australian motoring journalists for being very dull, but things looked up when the facelift arrived.

Thanks for correcting me. I must admit I didn’t know NMGB exported to Australia, my memory of my time there has obviously faded a little!

Do you own one and are there any good ones still around? If so I presume the last models?

Sadly, I don’t own one, but would love a GTI. However, many of these have been modified, crashed or just rusted away. Occasionally I see some of the standard low spec cars for sale normally automatic seem to survive for some strange reason. The worst part about it is I could’ve had a GTI at the time as a company car, but chose a Primera instead!

A great story of how a marketing mistake putting the Almera on the back foot from the beginning.. I enjoyed reminiscing what it was like to be working for Nissan GB during this period..

    Another well researched, fascinating video.
I didn't know about all the scandal in the early 90's.
I don't remember that first advert but I do recall both of those GTI ads. Perhaps that was the problem in that the run of the mill versions were good cars but unforgettable amongst the competition.

I was actually at Nissan GB when the crash test results were revealed… that wasn’t the best day in the office

@@Lot76CARS Could have been worse, you could have worked at Rover when the test results came in for the 100.

I’m with you Matt.. I was at Nissan GB at the time and we had high expectations for the car.. it was just up against a tough cohort of Focus and Golf but a massive step forward over the previous car.
