  • A film by Hemal Trivedi and Mohammed Naqvi
    This is the story of Shabeena, a remarkable school principal, and her quest to bring education to the children, especially young girls, living in the shadow of the Taliban on Pakistan's frontier.
    Despite age-old traditions that keep girls out of school and send them into arranged marriages, Shabeena's school actively recruits them.

    My father retired as a Headmaster from a Kashmir high school, he used to tell me some stories of that region and students, he used to visit people and convince them to send their children to schools, established a fund for supporting poor children which still continues now. Often if some students were not coming to classes he used to personally drive and visit their houses and bring them back. Teachers will is also important in changing the perception of local people as people still in Pakistan look with great respect towards teachers. Indeed, the state has ultimate obligation.

    Great documentary. I think we need more of these so the world at large can become aware of the issues faced by rural communities and their people. This is not an male or female issue. Women are the luminaries of their families and the educators of their future offspring including boys.

    It is very worrying that a big corporation like aljazeera cant get the translations right. I am a native speaker of pahari(the language that is being spoken) and there is many errors ,enough to change the actual meanings of what was said.
    Wonder how bad the rest of their documentaries etc are.

    • @abdullahhakim1571
      @abdullahhakim1571 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you can't have a positive mind and got a brain stuffed with critical views which are not that important, then please do us a favour , be silent. The translation are almost perfect I didn't find any errors, besides that's not important. What's important is to let people know about their cultural problems. The concerned staff made this video, put their efforts to highlight the issues and here you are to highlight the translation issue which is not really an issue. Now instead of concentrating on my message, go on focus on my grammatical errors I did while texting you this message

    Massive respect to the principle and all of the people who care for education of women. While I agree with the main theme of this video which highlights the intolerance of uneducated people towards education of women in Pakistan and the difficulties faced by women in Pakistan, I must say there are quite a few things in this video which are outright misleading.
    For instance, the description of this video says: "This is the story of Shabeena, a remarkable school principal, and her quest to bring education to the children, especially young girls, living in the shadow of the Taliban on Pakistan's frontier." This village is not located on 'Pakistan's frontier' and these people are not 'living in the shadow of Taliban'. In fact, they are living in District Rawalpindi, Punjab. There are two evidences:
    a) The women says, a blast in 'Sihala and Model town' is alarming for them as 'Sihala' is nearby [19:15]. Sihala is a town, situated in Rawalpindi, Punjab Pakistan. Taliban are and used to be, hundred of miles away from this region, in fact in another province.
    b) Almost all of the subjects in this video are speaking either Urdu (National language of Pakistan) or Pothowari. It interesting because Pothowari is a regional dialect spoken in Pothowar region. This region constitutes the northern part of Punjab, adjoins western Kashmir and southern KPK. I belong to Azad Kashmir and know this region and its language very well.
    I have also seen some inconsistency in the English subtitles of the video. This translation is giving an impression that terrorists are directly affecting their education and their lives are in danger. Yes, terrorists have opposed women education and committed several atrocities against them in Pakistan but this narrative does not apply to the region this video is shot in or to the whole of Pakistan. Terrorists have absolutely no control in northern Punjab. The only hindrances to education of women in this region are poverty and social backwardness, not a threat of terrorists.

    The one's in Pakistan consider themselves Pakistani and the one's in Afghanistan (eastern regions) consider themselves Afghan. After the British were pushed out during Pakistan-Indian partition, the "Durand line" was created and so the Pashtun region was divided between Pakistan and Afghanistan. During the soviet invasion and American interference in Afghanistan, many of the refugees fled to Pakistan and generations were born in these refugee camps.

    education for women is as crucial as for men. The trend is somehow is changed but still in far remote areas people have not changed their minds. Gender equality is the only surety for the sustained society. There is a misconception with religious education and other, actually both are interconnected and interlinked.

    There's so much that's lost in translation!
    For instance, the kid saying I hate my younger siblings, and I wanted to cut the youngest into small pieces! In a modern soceity, the kid would be sent to a psychiatrist!
    Also, I don't remember the last time Rs.5000 = $70......Unless the video was shot in 2006-2007, their exchange rate is flawed.
    Currently, Rs.5000 is $30.3 (US), which is Zarina's husband's monthly salary and she has 9 children.
    Even education can't teach this society anything!

    I am Pakistani and I feel that this video and this topic (Women's education in Pakistan) has been blown out of proportion.
    First of all, the people in this video are speaking Punjabi, and there is absolutely no way that this can be Northern Pakistan as stated in the opening of this short film.
    Secondly, you have mentioned Taliban in the text below (caption) yet the video mentions no sign of it. Please try not to exaggerate these topics and take them out of context. Aljazeera credible?

    • @jaff7483
      @jaff7483 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The north isn't just gilgit baltistan. Look at a map. Punjabi areas can definitely be found in northern Pakistan (areas around Rwp or Islamabad for example). And Taliban's shadow basically implies that Taliban territory and influence are not far and in fact in another documentary by the same director called "Among the Believers" a Red Mosque operated Madrassah is shown probably near or inside this village and many of the Red Mosque people are Taliban sympathizers.
      PS Al Jazeera is by far one of the most credible and free media organizations
      in my observation and that of many others. Especially if u compare it to the likes of other mainstream media corporations for example if this were CNN or Fox, u'd be seeing a grossly unrealistic image.

    اس ٹیچر کی عظمت کو سلام۔لیکن ہمیں مغرب سے اس کا کریڈٹ لینے کی قطعاً کوئی ضرورت نہیں، نہ ہی ہمیں اپنے معاشرے کی خرابیوں پر مغرب کے سامنے شرمندہ ہونے کی ضرورت ہے۔۔۔مغرب کی عورت کو پچھلی صدی میں جائیداد اور ووٹ کا حق ملا ہے۔۔۔۔جبکہ اسلام نے عورت کو 1400 برس قبل وہ حقوق دیئے جن کا مغربی عورت صرف خواب ہی دیکھ سکتی ہے ۔۔۔۔۔۔ہم اپنے معاشرے کی خرابیوں کو کسی بیرونی تعاون کے بغیر ہی سدھار لیں گے۔۔۔۔۔۔
    ان شاء الله
