I think it’s because late game, energy ammo is less common than light or heavy. The R99 and Alt both take light, while the CAR takes both light AND heavy
This is always my problem! Had that one game where 5 squads remaining and I have a full clip and 20 extra in the bag and for the remainder of the game, I kept spamming how I needed energy ammo whilst defending myself with 1 clip of ammo.. thing is.. I'm dropping kids with 0 ammo and only finding a mere handful from the people I knocked.. final team and I had to switch for the R-99.. the volt is really reliable but not when there isn't no ammo around
Exactly. I’ve lost games because my Volt just burns through more ammo than I can find. IF you manage to kill somebody that used an energy weapon, chances are they were just about tapped out themselves.
Alt is the poor man's smg. I liked it for it's lower recoil and high damage per bullet. But the only reason I actually used it was because it was the cheapest smg in the Arena mode.

It's actually my favorite gun. I definitely think it needs a buff or something, maybe damage or magazine size, but it's my go to back up weapon. My primary is usually the Longbow or Sentinel, which pairs nice with Valk and her ability to get to checky spots. It's even better since my go to backup character after Valk is Ballistic, I just sling the Havoc and get infinite energy with an absolute melting machine
Did you start playing vantage? Lol, I feel like valks potential is fully harnessed through an aggressive, pushy player, though you do you, just a suggestion.
I was so excited to see the alternator getting the disruptors back. Even though I tested ‘em out in the range, I convinced myself they were made to shine again red and purple shields and would do good late game, but it was the opposite. Crazy to me it’s so underpowered compared to other smgs even with a gold attachment.
It gets more effective the longer the game goes since people get increasingly more shield than health and especially if you can't carry lots of ammo ( can't find a backpack). However this is a niche situation since if more damage per shot is what you need you might as well get a rifle and collect heavy ammo. At the late game where you are most likely to find a good backpack the alternator still gets outclassed because now you can liberally mag dump with the high DPS r99 because you now have a huge ammo pool thanks to the backpack. The alternator however experiences diminishing returns as it can't possibly shoot all the ammo filled in a purple backpack, you are more likely to either win or die before that happens.
Honestly I can’t think of a gun that has slower velocity than the volt. Even close(ish) fights you have to kinda guess the opponents movement. The original volt was the best all around gun. Maybe they will take off the needs one day and bring it back.

I absolutely love the volt. One of my go to loadouts was the volt + R-301 since it meant I barely missed any shots, even if I was bad. I still don't miss shots, but the volt being a low dps weapon, and the R-301 getting a nerf, made that loadout I relied on a husk of what it used to be
In titanfall the volt was considered the least annoying smg because it did the least damage and that was a good thing because nobody would yell racial slurs at you in chat for using a car or r97

Alternator late game w/o disruptor is not bad, it just wouldn’t be able to out DPS other SMGs, so it will be in a similar situation to Spitfire where you can only win the fight if your opponent couldn’t beam their whole mag on you. However, Alternator is fantastic in a prolonged/grief fight cus it has best ammo economy. Even more so if you have disruptor. Also, I think it’s the greatest counter against gold armor on slippery legends
From my thousands of hours of experience, the Volt is the best gun in the entire game, hands down. It may have slightly worse DPS than other SMGs (not a big deal), but it more than makes up for it with its far better stability and larger magazine. It means that while other SMGs will miss a few shots and have to reload multiple times, the Volt can beam them in one mag and not have to reload, winning the fight much quicker. It also has much more effective range, which is quite important.
the volt has two experiences. 1. it hits everything hard as heck and you're frying kids 2. it feels like pillows hitting your enemies. as many mentioned energy ammo is scarce but that isn't the true reason for why people don't pick it up that much. the optics matter on the volt. i've tried the 1x, 2x , 1x Holo and Digi threat. i will go as far as to say that the 1x Holo and Digi changes how one experiences the Volt.
honestly, iron sights are excelent on the volt, so if i need to use a 1x or 2x i'll just skip, digi is a different story though. but the biggest issue is just that the R99 has a better DPS, which will shred even more up close. for the mid to long range fights you might aswell bring a hemlock now, 2 different ammo types while the hemlock is good close up if need be while doing high damage all around. even the alternator disruptor falls flat nowadays, since the shield damage is nice, but falls flat once you do break that shield and need that extra bit of damage.
I regularly use the volt, but I tend to use it with another SMG, or a Shotgun. That way I have a close range weapon, a back up close range (Volt) and a mid range (Volt again).

There are just better options As you previously mentioned there are multiple other SMG’s with better DPS The R-99, and C.A.R have better DPS and will kill faster if your hitting your shots Even the Alternator has better DPS if you put a disruptor on it Also the Volt uses Energy ammo which is less common than Light or Heavy ammo. Also when it comes to energy weapons there are better choices. The Nemisis and Triple Take ( and now the L-Star; I’m updating this comment months later) are better energy weapons than the Volt. Which further discourages people from running the volt

I hear the ammo problem ALOT. But finding purple extentions for an energy gun is like the easiest job ever.. now with a team carrying a total of 3 light guns, I would wish you luck all getting good extended mags.😂 pros, and cons, not only cons. Also, dont even compare 99 and volt, because their usecase is totally different. Want to slam one around the closest corners? Go 99, want to slam that dude trying to push you? Defenitely volt.

Introduced in later seasons, has been in the crafter multiple times, and was in the care package for ages...It's never around long enough for it to become anyone's go to weapon.
The volt used to be the more “stability and range” option for smg’s if that’s what you wanted back in the day. I remember falling in love with it during season 9 in arenas just for how versatile it was: more accurate and stable than others at longer distances? For sure, it was great. With all of the changes at smg’s and the inclusion of the CAR, it does no surprise me at all that it has fallen in popularity. That’s Respawns balancing for you guys.
I prefer 1x VOLT SMG paired with an R-301 no matter what conditions there are, cuz I always manage to get as much ammo as possible and never have to worry about it. Killing enemies helps with replenishing that ammo. The DPS works for me anyways, because I one-mag people with it.
This is very ironic because when the volt was in package like a year ago, EVERYONE wanted it out, then it was used for a season, and now nobody uses it.
The main reason is how favored it was since release and in almost every apex clip it's an r9,car,flatline,or r3 so those guns just stand out and until recently they performed great
When I still played Apex, I loved this weapon, it was my favorite mostly because it was an easy fire and forget weapon when it first came out. I was really upset when they put it in the care package, and then re-released it nerfed.
The volt is one of the best guns in the game, but the most common guns picked up are light ammo, heavy ammo and shotgun ammo weapons. Meaning you’re 100% going to run out of ammo if you make it late ring, and if you do somehow make it to late ring someone is going to burn through all the ammo with a nemises
the Volt SMG was my go to weapon since Titanfall and still my go to weapon in apex never gonna stop using it I won so many games with it it's basically my signature weapon
I had the same issue with the volt, also with the r301 but that's because my aim on controller with a 3x sight isn't exactly a laser in the making... I like both guns well enough, the Volt is much better for me as a backup more than the main gun for it's reload and swap speed
Personally, I'm used to compensating recoil in CSGO and now Apex, and switching to Volt throws me off since it shoots relatively straight with very minimal correction
as someone whos primary loadout usally has a volt, not alot of ppl using it is news to me, i still find it op becuz of its 1 clip potential withoutattachments
I always liked it, but refused to use it and the Havoc simply because I feel like energy ammo is harder to come across. It’s good on maps with PVE so that you get the ammo drops, but I don’t see a lot of it in bins.
I love the volt. When we had arenas (RIP), I would instantly grab a volt since it was what I was best with. Still is, but the R99 is still pretty good if you can hit your shots (which I can’t)
When the volt came out, it seemed comparable with R9. A little slower but easier recoil. I also feel like beside the dps nerf the bullet velocity seems slower as well. Like you have aim more on where they are moving to even at pretty short ranges compared to the r9.
Its because of the dps. I like the volt at the beginning of a match but in the end game when you come across teams in red evos with better guns you immediately notice the difference. I feel the the same way about the Evo 8. Love it in the beginning of a match but will always drop it before the end game
All the SMGs are great in mid or close range yet like any tool there's some pros and cons. C.A.R is a great gun that pulls from two different pools of ammo yet makes you fill up another pocket that could be shields or healing, R-99 is a rushers best friend and foe due to it's fire rate you are sure to get the upper hand by landing your shots yet higher mags pull more and leave you seeking for more ammo which making long fights a no go, true ride or die. The Alt is only good in close range with massive fall off range yet gives great control of bullet spread which maybe slower but offers tremendous benefits for if you get at least blue stock. Lastly the Volt, a unicorn of all four guns that has the largest range and ease of ammo type to pull cause you don't need worry about greedy teammates taking all the much needed ammo cause only a few weapons in the game use it but unlike the only three this one lacks in power yet can change for the LMG, triple shot, Havoc rifle without wasting more time finding more items aside the stock.
Actually there are more reasons, one of them being the nemesis using energy ammos too, the fact that it's easier to find heavy or light ammos in late game is also a big plus
I love the Volt. It’s not a finisher weapon though. I like it mid range and then switch to a shotty or a grenade to finish. Close range, it does damage but I always lose a head on fight. It only works if I’m utilizing movement and cover.
The thing with the Volt is that its stability is due to the low fire rate and its use of energy ammo. However, this means it cant output enough damage to overpower more specialized SMGs meant specifically for close-range. That doesn't mean its bad, but its extreme versatility comes at a cost, as always.
Funny enough, my two favorite guns are the Volt and Alternator. Actually won a game by being super lucky and getting two gold Volt drops, was then lucky enough to get a bunch of energy ammo, that was a super lucky game. But for the alternator, I just tend to get more hits and kills with it
i don't play much apex but volt has always been my go to, it's a good smg and it's better at mid or long range than the rest and since i've always sucked at close range fights it's always been my best option
The volt is my go-to 2nd gun if I’m running a sniper or marksman. An smg that feels strong in both close and close-medium ranges is better than running an r9 or car that struggles past close range. The alternator has too low dps to be viable in r9 ranges, and shy of a turbo havoc the volt runs pretty good.
It's really good for early against blue and gold shields but against purple and red it's kinda useless because you never have enough ammo in a mag to finish the job you'll find yourself switching to your secondary weapon most of the time to get that final blow
There’s a tiny nuance that I’ve seen no one talks about: its fire rate and AD speed. When using the Volt, you NEED to hit the initial shot to slow down the target as Volt fire rate often synchronizes with full AD speed, causing you to miss the consecutive shots if you’re not tracking well or using MnK
I love the volt personally. One of my favourite guns in ranked, only problem is late game I usually switch it out for someone else’s light or heavy ammo weapon cuz energy ammo just isn’t common enough
By far the Alternator just feels so satisfying to use sometimes even tho it has slow fire rate. The Car can take both ammo but i think i hate it the most as far satisfaction goes.
I've been maining the volt since a year ago as it seemed to be the easiest to hit enemies with(don't ask me how, just felt like I could hit most of my shots). But enemies surviving with about 5-20 hp consistently happened very, very often as you don't get enough bullets per magazine for this little amount of dps.
I'm actually more surprised people don't use the Car more. Versatile in short to mid takes 2 different ammos and mags so easy to upgrade and it hasn't been consistently nerfed like the 99.
The Volt is Great and better than some lights, I think that Energy ammo guns get a bad rap cause 2 of them have some hella delay which can get you killed late... Tripple take is one of my favorite marksmans cause it can be doubled as a shot gun with a little practice on hipfire.
if im running an energy gun this season its gunna be the triple take, requires a single stack of ammo and doesnt have a range it doesnt excel at, so it pairs with basically every gun perfectly, even other snipers if you wanna be like that
Few reasons. -its in the crafter so its awkward to get. -energy ammo is hard to replenish because not many people carry it. Volt is in the crafter, Triple is bad this season, nemesis is the only energy gun people carry. -Car, R99, scout and G7 have somewhat interchangeable mags making these loadouts less cumbersome compared to an energy mag that basically is only ever carried by players using nemesis.
i personally love the volt it feels nice it's pretty it's got cool sounds i like that it still works fine mid range and I play it whenever i can(until i find an r99)
Volt is good paired with another smg or shotgun because it has range and can be used effectively as a primary weapon. It's best use is to crack for heavy damage and swap instead of reloading
For me, ever since they removed barrels from SMGs Volt has felt "twitchy" like I would always lose track of its spray when I need couple of bullets to finish someone, CAR and R99 feel far more consistent to play with. Even if it's a placebo I'm down for it as long as it works 😂

They should not have nerfed its bullet speed, it made it ineffective at range which was its niche compared to the higher DPS R99/CAR

3k damage every game I use volt and triple take 360 in ammo cause energy is hard to find in late rounds , triple take as my shot gun volt as my smg

Imo the volt is incredibly good it's my most used gun and also i recommend the 1x 2x and digi for it

The volt used to be the more “stability and range” option for smg’s if that’s what you wanted back in the day.
I remember falling in love with it during season 9 in arenas just for how versatile it was: more accurate and stable than others at longer distances? For sure, it was great.
With all of the changes at smg’s and the inclusion of the CAR, it does no surprise me at all that it has fallen in popularity. That’s Respawns balancing for you guys.

I prefer 1x VOLT SMG paired with an R-301 no matter what conditions there are, cuz I always manage to get as much ammo as possible and never have to worry about it. Killing enemies helps with replenishing that ammo. The DPS works for me anyways, because I one-mag people with it.

This is very ironic because when the volt was in package like a year ago, EVERYONE wanted it out, then it was used for a season, and now nobody uses it.

Alternator is heavily underrated. I personally use it for close, medium, and far range. I think the recoil makes it a really really versatile weapon.
The main reason is how favored it was since release and in almost every apex clip it's an r9,car,flatline,or r3 so those guns just stand out and until recently they performed great
I am glad someone found out. Was chasing Catalyst with volt, I got frustrated. I switched to r99.
The Volt is honestly my go to SMG, it has great recoil control for longer ranges, and is probably the only SMG I run a 2x on over a 1x

When I still played Apex, I loved this weapon, it was my favorite mostly because it was an easy fire and forget weapon when it first came out. I was really upset when they put it in the care package, and then re-released it nerfed.
I used to mainly use the volt back when fuse came out it felt really good haven't used it in recent times for obvious reasons
The volt is one of the best guns in the game, but the most common guns picked up are light ammo, heavy ammo and shotgun ammo weapons. Meaning you’re 100% going to run out of ammo if you make it late ring, and if you do somehow make it to late ring someone is going to burn through all the ammo with a nemises
the Volt SMG was my go to weapon since Titanfall and still my go to weapon in apex never gonna stop using it I won so many games with it it's basically my signature weapon
Alternator is apparently slept on. I chose that with the hop up over all of them
I had the same issue with the volt, also with the r301 but that's because my aim on controller with a 3x sight isn't exactly a laser in the making... I like both guns well enough, the Volt is much better for me as a backup more than the main gun for it's reload and swap speed

Personally, I'm used to compensating recoil in CSGO and now Apex, and switching to Volt throws me off since it shoots relatively straight with very minimal correction

Volt in Titanfall 2 was amazing. Achieved my first 73/12 with it, it was so perfect it replaced the hemlock for me in an instant
as someone whos primary loadout usally has a volt, not alot of ppl using it is news to me, i still find it op becuz of its 1 clip potential withoutattachments
Every 1v3 I’ve done has been with the volt, it’s so reliable and the range is somehow really good too

I always liked it, but refused to use it and the Havoc simply because I feel like energy ammo is harder to come across. It’s good on maps with PVE so that you get the ammo drops, but I don’t see a lot of it in bins.
Alternator and car is my favorite combo. Especially if you have digi threats and purple or gold mags
I love the volt. When we had arenas (RIP), I would instantly grab a volt since it was what I was best with. Still is, but the R99 is still pretty good if you can hit your shots (which I can’t)
When the volt came out, it seemed comparable with R9. A little slower but easier recoil. I also feel like beside the dps nerf the bullet velocity seems slower as well. Like you have aim more on where they are moving to even at pretty short ranges compared to the r9.
Its because of the dps. I like the volt at the beginning of a match but in the end game when you come across teams in red evos with better guns you immediately notice the difference. I feel the the same way about the Evo 8. Love it in the beginning of a match but will always drop it before the end game
All the SMGs are great in mid or close range yet like any tool there's some pros and cons. C.A.R is a great gun that pulls from two different pools of ammo yet makes you fill up another pocket that could be shields or healing, R-99 is a rushers best friend and foe due to it's fire rate you are sure to get the upper hand by landing your shots yet higher mags pull more and leave you seeking for more ammo which making long fights a no go, true ride or die. The Alt is only good in close range with massive fall off range yet gives great control of bullet spread which maybe slower but offers tremendous benefits for if you get at least blue stock. Lastly the Volt, a unicorn of all four guns that has the largest range and ease of ammo type to pull cause you don't need worry about greedy teammates taking all the much needed ammo cause only a few weapons in the game use it but unlike the only three this one lacks in power yet can change for the LMG, triple shot, Havoc rifle without wasting more time finding more items aside the stock.
Actually there are more reasons, one of them being the nemesis using energy ammos too, the fact that it's easier to find heavy or light ammos in late game is also a big plus
I love the Volt. It’s not a finisher weapon though. I like it mid range and then switch to a shotty or a grenade to finish.
Close range, it does damage but I always lose a head on fight. It only works if I’m utilizing movement and cover.

The thing with the Volt is that its stability is due to the low fire rate and its use of energy ammo.
However, this means it cant output enough damage to overpower more specialized SMGs meant specifically for close-range. That doesn't mean its bad, but its extreme versatility comes at a cost, as always.
Funny enough, my two favorite guns are the Volt and Alternator. Actually won a game by being super lucky and getting two gold Volt drops, was then lucky enough to get a bunch of energy ammo, that was a super lucky game. But for the alternator, I just tend to get more hits and kills with it
i don't play much apex but volt has always been my go to, it's a good smg and it's better at mid or long range than the rest and since i've always sucked at close range fights it's always been my best option
The volt is my go-to 2nd gun if I’m running a sniper or marksman. An smg that feels strong in both close and close-medium ranges is better than running an r9 or car that struggles past close range. The alternator has too low dps to be viable in r9 ranges, and shy of a turbo havoc the volt runs pretty good.
My absolute favorite gun and that will never change but yeah it's doing a bit rough as of recent patches

It's really good for early against blue and gold shields but against purple and red it's kinda useless because you never have enough ammo in a mag to finish the job you'll find yourself switching to your secondary weapon most of the time to get that final blow
There’s a tiny nuance that I’ve seen no one talks about: its fire rate and AD speed. When using the Volt, you NEED to hit the initial shot to slow down the target as Volt fire rate often synchronizes with full AD speed, causing you to miss the consecutive shots if you’re not tracking well or using MnK
It’s just that late game energy ammo is so scarce that it’s better to just run a light or heavy gun

I love the volt personally. One of my favourite guns in ranked, only problem is late game I usually switch it out for someone else’s light or heavy ammo weapon cuz energy ammo just isn’t common enough
By far the Alternator just feels so satisfying to use sometimes even tho it has slow fire rate. The Car can take both ammo but i think i hate it the most as far satisfaction goes.
The gun I pick up depends on the attachments I find so I tend to use the car more often since it’s so versatile
I've been maining the volt since a year ago as it seemed to be the easiest to hit enemies with(don't ask me how, just felt like I could hit most of my shots). But enemies surviving with about 5-20 hp consistently happened very, very often as you don't get enough bullets per magazine for this little amount of dps.
I'm actually more surprised people don't use the Car more. Versatile in short to mid takes 2 different ammos and mags so easy to upgrade and it hasn't been consistently nerfed like the 99.

The Volt is Great and better than some lights, I think that Energy ammo guns get a bad rap cause 2 of them have some hella delay which can get you killed late... Tripple take is one of my favorite marksmans cause it can be doubled as a shot gun with a little practice on hipfire.
if im running an energy gun this season its gunna be the triple take, requires a single stack of ammo and doesnt have a range it doesnt excel at, so it pairs with basically every gun perfectly, even other snipers if you wanna be like that
Few reasons.
-its in the crafter so its awkward to get.
-energy ammo is hard to replenish because not many people carry it. Volt is in the crafter, Triple is bad this season, nemesis is the only energy gun people carry.
-Car, R99, scout and G7 have somewhat interchangeable mags making these loadouts less cumbersome compared to an energy mag that basically is only ever carried by players using nemesis.
i personally love the volt it feels nice it's pretty it's got cool sounds i like that it still works fine mid range and I play it whenever i can(until i find an r99)
Volt is good paired with another smg or shotgun because it has range and can be used effectively as a primary weapon. It's best use is to crack for heavy damage and swap instead of reloading
For me, ever since they removed barrels from SMGs Volt has felt "twitchy" like I would always lose track of its spray when I need couple of bullets to finish someone, CAR and R99 feel far more consistent to play with. Even if it's a placebo I'm down for it as long as it works 😂

The volt used to be my fave weapon but as i got better at aiming i went for the r99 and/or car. Some people actually get use to certain guns in games, like for example me I use something fast for far, mid and close range amd someone could use something with a small fire rate and smokes everyone
I use the Volt a lot!! That thing is a beast and a very consistent SMG! Plus this has great range for an SMG!
