Road Trip is Geoff's brain child. He comes up with the majority of their live skits, with input from the others.

Yep. Phantom is easily the best thing they did while Tony was in the group, _and_ he has the male lead. (Rachel Potter has the female lead.)

They are hilariously, marvelously deranged. And while acting like total loons they still sound amazing! ❤

This is what Geoff calls 'VoicePlay's special brand of dumb'.
Cesar still hasn't had to do either number yet. He talked about it in a webchat and Geoff reassured him he would get his chance to get tired of it.😂😂

"The Chicken Song" is an old Scout song, named "The Rooster"; one of those silly songs sung at scout camp. Thanks, Cole! This reaction was hilarious!

Are all these verses in the original? The audience seem a bit surprised, so I’ve been wondering if VoicePlay has added something, or is it just because they act it out?

@@veronicathunander4579 I've heard an old folk group- Brothers Four, or maybe the Lamplighters, or someone like that- perform it. The puns are VoicePlay's twist, but structurally, it's the same song. Their jokes- and the addition of the waitress, who is *not* in the original- make a quaintly humorous song much, much funnier.

I don't know if they will ever tour again, they seem comfortable in the niche they've found. That said, if I could see them live, with back stage passes, I would do whatever it took to get there. Thanx, Cole, these were great!!
They did Grim Grinning Ghosts with full production value. There is also a recording of it that they did after a live show. Just them sitting/standing around a desk or table backstage. I like the live version better. In case you needed any more ideas!

Yesss! These are the two versions of the videos that are best. VP was performing both of these before the Sing-Off tour. I think the guys are sick of Chicken Song (been performing it since high school or college) but Geoff said in an interview they'd still do Road Trip because it was a hit every time. Would love to see it with Cesar in the backseat middle, and Ashley Diane in the front seat with Eli.
The waitress Tony is channeling is his sister Maggie. She and Tony both sing in "Quarantine: The Musical" on PattyCake's channel. It's hilarious! Layne's daughter Doris plays Tony's daughter, and she has a blast with Uncle Tony. The best VP video to get the full impact of Tony's gorgeous voice is Phantom of the Opera. It was their first theatrical style video. You could do a three-fer with their One-Minute Musicals, all original compositions: Stuck In Traffic, Lightbulb, and Miley Cyrus. A Crimpella was one of their first videos on YT. There's a video of them performing it live in concert and it sounds just as good, just as tight.
We used to sing a G-rated version of Chicken Song at girls' camp when I was a teen. I think Road Trip was Geoff's creation. They filmed a studio version in a red convertible, no audience, posted only on their Patreon channel.

I just love the Chicken Song, it literally had me me on the ground laughing the first time I heard it 😅😂😂 Yes this is the right version, but another one you should check out is where Paul (their sound engineer) stepped in because Tony got stuck in an airport and couldn't make the show. Poor Eli fell to the ground laughing.
Geoff told Tony that he looked great.

You got the name Paul correct, but it's not Paul Kaleka, their sound engineer. It's Paul Sperrazza, the tenor/vocal percussionist for Toxic Audio/Vox Audio.

You should go back just a little further and react to their “A Crimpella!” It’s from at least 10 years ago, starts a bit slow and has you wondering, “where is this going?” But is quite silly and entertaining!!

This was from the Sing Off Tour, but was part of their touring routine. A good follow up to this might be checking out a couple of their shorts. There is one that’s called Stuck in Traffic that is great. It’s only about a minute though but they did two or three just about that same time period. One is “Lightbulb” but I can’t remember the name of the other. I am pretty sure that they were original pieces.

    • @katthor7311

That a new look! I kind of miss your hair. Having been a hairdresser early in my life, I have to concede that it does grow back. Thanks for pulling these two songs up - they make me happy. It was during the Sing-off tour. The Chicken/Rooster song may still be used in Campfire Songs / Scouting. I don't know the source.

Tony actually isn’t much featured, except he is the lead together with Rachel Potter in Phantom of the Opera, which you’ve already reacted to. Except from that I think we mostly hear him in the harmonies.

After saying about the money that they lost “an awful lot of it”, and Tony gives him a sour face, Geoff says “You look great!”
And in case someone is wondering what Tony says:
“Hey, my name is Maggie, I’m your waitress.”

“Today is my very first day”.

“I don’t think we have that [drinks].”

This is pre-Sing-Off. Maybe the worst of the several problems they had on the show, was that this sort of thing was how they thought of themselves as a group back then, and how they engaged their theatrical side, and when they went on the show, they didn't know how to take stuff like this and turn it into the 3-4 minute pop songs that the show producers seemed to want. So they ended up mostly *not* doing much (on the show) with their creative / theatrical background. At one point the show handed them the category "movie song" on a silver platter, and instead of doing anything they might do with that category today (so many possibilities: pop/dubstep version of Poor Unfortunate Souls, rock / metal version of the Star Wars theme, J-pop version of Lonely Goatherd, ...), they just picked a random song that was used in a random movie that wasn't even really noted for its music, and did an acapella version of it, and it was the most forgettable thing ever. Sad.
On the plus side, being on the show exposed them to a lot of fun and creative people, and afterward they recovered nicely and got onto TH-cam and at some point did their version of Phantom of the Opera, which is amazing and eventually lead to the kinds of stuff they do now.

These are both so funny but my favourite of the two is "The Chicken Song". Something I love about acapella bands is that although they take the music seriously, they don't take themselves seriously. They can still sound awesome but at the same time be funny as hell. I've seen too many live excerpts of modern bands either making "guitar face" or looking either bored or annoyed. If they're not happy to be paid to play, why the hell would I pay to watch?

I think the best one showing Tony is Phantom of the Opera. Fun note , Earl hates that song, Tiptoe Through the Tulips. Tiny Tim totally ruined an otherwise sweet old song for many people.

Another "double feature" with Tony you might consider doing would be "Grim Grinning Ghosts". They have both a live version (filmed in their hotel room while on tour) and full production version on their channel.
