Made my way over after your wonderful livestream presentation and I can see that I've found a great new (to me) channel to follow! So good to make your acquaintance and congratulations on a terrific channel!
Dhanyavaad, Angshumam! It was wonderful sharing the stream with you yesterday and thank you for checking this out. I know I have many days ahead of checking out your videos, thank you for sharing your incredible insight on yesterday's stream!
Wow.. I just gotta say this: Bunk I will never understand why your channel is so UNDERRATED. You showcase so many books that alot of us never heard of. And your passion and the way you share it makes me excited everytime. Love your spirit man. Dope list of books too bro. I wanna check out that COSMIC DETECTIVE. Well done man.
DAY DAY! Appreciate the kind words man, I just like talking about cool comics with great people. I saw that you put the Immortal Hulk omnibus as your book of the year and ... I'm embarrassed to say I haven't finished the series yet. Read the first two trades and loved them but never finished. Got to make sure I do that here in 2024!
Glad my list lived up to your expectations! There's plenty of great capes and spandex comics out there but there are also tons of great non-super hero books too, all of them deserve shouting out. Thanks for watching!
Thanks man! You know I can't have a year go by without praising DWJ. If he puts out a book in a given year, I'm going to shout it out. And Eight Billion Genies, man, like I said in the video I did EXPECT to like that anywhere near as much as I did. Let's hope 2024 is another great year of comics!
I absolutely loved Dr. Strange Fall Sunrise! Great pick man, the art work had so much depth and psychedelic goodness, a masterpiece! Also I it may be cause I’m a psychonaut, but I actually understood the story 😂
Ha, the story was DEFINITELY trippy, but I loved every part of that book. Even if you completely skipped out on the story (the first time I read it I had a pretty serious cold and couldn't focus on much) the amazing art by the Moores would still put this book in the top 10 by itself. When I reread it with a clear head, I got to enjoy it that much more.
Seriously, it was great and I didn't hear anyone talk about it at all. It came out in October and a lot of 'Best of' lists are mostly all done by then. Hopefully it gets more coverage this year!
Thanks for the interesting picks, many of which were unknown to me. I probably bought more comics/books in 2023 than any previous year, but the only things you mentioned that I'd already purchased were Dr. Strange, Superman, and Ice Cream Man, and I haven't yet had time to read any of them. I imagine that I will eventually add several of your choices to my enormous mountain of unread books. 👍
I like doing lists like this both to celebrate amazing comics but also to try to give some that might have fallen through the cracks and got missed. You've got 3 great comics in the list you mentioned clearly. What were your favorite books of the year? I'm always interested in finding out great comics I might have missed or are sitting in my "to be read" like that can get nudged to the top
I'm always playing catch up with new releases - only 8 of the 75 books I read last year were published in 2023. Really enjoyed the diversity on this list and picked up 20th Century Men from Black Cat Records N Comics while in Dallas for work. A cool shop and a cool looking book! Might dig into it tomorrow on my travels home. Great video!
Thanks for checking out the video! I haven't been in DFW since 2008 and didn't hit up any comic shops while I was there but my brother in law lives in Austin and I'm a big fan of AntiHero Gallery out there. Hope you like 20th Century Men!
It was one of those books that every month a new issue came out I went back and read all the previous ones to make sure I had the best understanding for it. Great story by King and fantastically moody and expressive art by Hester.
Great list! I’m fairly light on reading current comics, not for lack of interest, just the comic art side of things usually takes all my attention (and $$$). I did read Space Age & Do A Powerbomb though, both excellent reads! Here’s to more great content in 2024!
Ha, having seen the pieces you've been opening I completely get how following current series took a back seat to current reading. I'm flipped from you, where current comic reading and comic collecting gets my primary attention and comic art is secondary. The great news is, with so many great new titles coming out, that means a whole lot of new comic art coming out! Cheers to some amazing collecting in 2024!
Jake and Jordan are the best! I was honored when they asked me to host their 100th video stream and always love streaming with Jake. Thank you so much for the kind words, I'm just over here trying to say good words about good books!
Since Omar made me only talk about one book this year, I should make a video on all the others I wanted to cover. What am I going to do, not tell everyone about comics I like?
Awesome, thank you! I'm curious, what did you have as your top book last year? If you think we've got similar tastes I would love to hear about any books you liked that might have gone under the radar for me

Love your run down the marriage one I’m a “latch key” kid from the 70s dad was a psychopath Vietnam vet Purple Heart he left mom and me in dire poverty and drove luxury cars the rest of his life we’re estranged for 25 years now ; no way I can read about human pain and suffering in the marriage like that , glad you made it though !
On that Swan Songs issue, the story of the marriage is just one issue. Thankfully the marriage portrayed in the issue is more of a situation of two people who stop communicating with each other, eventually stop trying to, and how each of them blames the other. No kids involved, that would have certainly changed the trajectory. I'm really sorry to hear that your Dad wasn't the greatest but I'm glad you were able to get past that and grow up despite it. I really think you'll like Eight Billion Genies, though, that one was surprisingly beautiful. Going into it, I was really ready to be disappointed, clearly that didn't happen
Year one Gotham was another display on how tom king has no business touching the sanctity of what great writers have created! He has to let us know how bad anyone who has money is how bad and sorry Batman should be of his money. He is a destroyer of anything sacred if it doesn’t fit the narrative he wants to put out there ! 20th century wasn’t bad but 1. Really. I was out after 3 issues it just dialogues you to death.
I appreciate getting different opinions on here and talking with people who thought differently than me. In the case of 20th Century Men, it's a very dense and dialogue-heavy book that's not going to be for everyone. I just happen to like books that are on the "talkier" end of the spectrum and really enjoyed how the book flashed through each faction of people affected by the war and showed us their perspective. And that Morian art, this felt like a book written for me, it may not be written for everyone. In the case of King as a writer, I don't really view any of his stuff as Canon or existing outside of the story that's being told right then and there. In the case of something like Mr. Miracle, I don't consider that a 4th World story, for instance. King is using Kirby's characters to tell his own stories. It doesn't lessen or affect the stories that the King told, those stories still stand on their own, completely separate from the King story. When I'm reading King, I'm not wondering how it fits into the greater comics narrative, I'm enjoying the story he's telling then. That approach isn't going to work with anyone, and I get why it rubs some people the wrong way. And it's definitely a story of the haves vs have nots, but we've had stories forever about the corrupting influence of money, this was just a 2023 version of that same tale. Not going to be for everyone, and that's cool! I'm glad there are comic stories out there for every kind of reader. What was your favorite book from last year?
