Zager & Evans were an American rock-pop duo active during the late 60's-70's. This futuristic song "In The Year 2525" was their biggest hit in 1969 so they are often classified as a one-hit wonder.

The video clips are from the 1927 classic film. Metropolis.

Denny Zager and Rick Evans met at Nebraska Wesleyan University in 1962. They, along with drummer Danny Schindler formed a group called The Eccentrics which lasted until Schindler's tour in Vietnam in 1965. Evans also left in 1965, then reunited with Zager three years later in 1968.
In the Year 2525 (Exordium & Terminus) was written by Evans and warned of the dangers of technology, portraying a future in which the human race is destroyed by its own technological and medical innovations. The last stanzas of the song suggest that mankind undergoes a continuous cycle of birth, death and rebirth.
Denny Zager now builds custom guitars at Zager Guitars in Lincoln, Nebraska. Rick Evans largely retired from public life and passed away in February 2018.

I remember listening to this song on the radio late at night in my bedroom at my grandparents’s house, the car headlights flashing thru the windows onto the slanted ceiling as they past by. A lot of the things in this song that seemed far fetched then, seem more likely than not now, only 54 years later, we don’t have to wait til the year 6565!

This is one of my favorites, I think Zager and Evans are a one hit wonder, I don't know any other songs by them. But this is a really good song.

Wow! What an amazing song & reaction. Kinda scary but not that far fetched. Most of the things said were not only possible but perhaps probable. The way the world is now it just wouldn’t take that long.🎯

When this song came out in the 60s we laughed at the lyrics because it was so unbelievable…..I’m 66 and I’m not laughing now.
Robots are taking over and we are on the brink of WW3. Scary

I had just graduated high school in 1969 when this song came out in the summer, July 12. We could start to see things happening even then from the prophecies of this song. Little did we know that the 10,000 year projection in the song would occur within the next 50 years?😢

Sadly, this was Zager & Evans' only hit single. Speaking of, a couple of other one-hit wonders from the '60s you might like are "Journey to the Center of the Mind" by the Amboy Dukes, featuring a very young Ted Nugent, and Iron Butterfly's "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida"; don't want to spoil too much, but if you ever do choose the latter, please do the full album version.

I saw your channel for the first time today. This song from 1969 is more than eerie. To predict so many from that era is amazing. Only the strong and the devout as well as the as people getting out of major cities will be left to help the people left behind. BTW , you’re one handsome guy. 🤗

Yes, it is a dark song. And back in the day, I can't talk about everyone. But those who I knew. We were all talking about it. And we considered it a protest song. It was our future if we didn't get our act together as a people. And that's why it's on my "protest" play list.

    Here's a OHW I haven't heard since 1977.
This song played over the radio in my Consumer Ed class and constantly brought me into my science fiction books. Maybe that's why I only got a D. 🙂

The music had a crescendo in intensity for each date represented until the point where it's not possible to save humanity. Far away on another planet, perhaps humans are starting anew.
