I remember Metropolis first appeared in 1927-it was a fascinating time. The film’s portrayal of towering cities and the divide between the classes felt eerily familiar, echoing other moments in history where society stood on the brink of great change. It reminded me of how shifts in power and technology have always shaped civilizations, much like those I’ve seen before. Metropolis captured that sense of an uncertain future with remarkable clarity, a theme that seems to reemerge time and again.

One thing about the movie Metropolis. When it was to be released in the U.S., the government intervened and mandated some changes. Yes, I remembered while I was editing (I put it up on the screen). When I watched that, it was SOOO crazy, but now it's really not that shocking to think of that being a reality.
This song really makes me think. It’s scary. This was written in 1969? Wow. What visionaries. At the end, the lady on the table, her life was transferred to the robot and then she died?
I believe this song was influenced by the article "The Future as a Way of Life" in Horizon magazine, Summer 1965 issue. Which led to the book Future Shock is a 1970 book by American futurist Alvin Toffler,[1] written together with his wife Adelaide Farrell,[2][3] in which the authors define the term "future shock" as a certain psychological state of individuals and entire societies, and a personal perception of "too much change in too short a period of time". The book, which became an international bestseller, has sold over 6 million copies and has been widely translated.
Also known as "Exordium & Terminus" this song went to number 1 on Billboard in the U.S and stayed there for 6 weeks. In my opinion it's the most apocalyptic song of all time, and no remake can come anywhere close to its emotional appeal and thematic depth. So popular is it worldwide that It's been covered over 60 times in 7 languages.
My parents had this on 45. I played that record to shreds as a kid. If you’re looking for some fun similar themes, check out the albums “Time,” by ELO and “Kilroy Was Here,” by Styx. Both are semi-dystopic concept albums. Just begin with the first song on each, though with “Time” you need to listen to “Prologue/Twilight” together. The movie you’re thinking of is “Demolition Man.”
@jamielandis4308 That's so cool! I had a record player back when I was about 9. Ah the good old days. I remembered "Demolition Man" when I was editing and added the text to the video 😊👍 Thanks for the other album suggestions! I remember those bands.
@AJRabies I'm not weirded out by this song at all. It's just a funny title because apparently they were a "one hit wonder". I'm 100% on board with it... because it's clearly predicted the future... which is now our present.

Great reaction to a song that fascinated me even as a child. And even more so as I got older and understood the meaning. I agree with many of your statements. But in one case, you too are a victim of targeted disinformation through social media. If you believe that Elon Musk is actually warning about the dangers of AI because he cares about the well-being of humanity, freedom and democratic values, then you are completely on the wrong track. If he does this publicly, it only serves to maintain his philanthropic image and facade as public discussion about the dangers of AI becomes louder and louder. And speaking out as a warning voice in this discussion is, of course, very well received by the gullible. Please don't take this as a personal attack, but we in Western Europe (still) have free media that are not completely controlled by opinion-forming corporations, autocracies and dictatorships, which is why we probably know more about what is going on behind the scenes. Elon Musk is not the protector of humanity and savior of the world that he portrays himself to be in public. That is just what the whole world is supposed to believe about him. He is a master of manipulation and disinformation, and unfortunately his charade works in most people's minds. Elon Musk has very close ties to leading figures in the right-libertarian movement (Peter Thiel, to name just one), who fundamentally reject any form of democracy and constitutional legality, including, for example, women's suffrage. And Musk's takeover of Twitter was not simply an extravagance of a bored multi-billionaire who doesn't know what to do with his money. He did it with very specific intentions. A quote from an article of 2022 by the German publicist Richard Herzinger (herzinger.org - sorry, but only in German) that aptly sums up his true intentions: "By taking over Twitter, Elon Musk has acquired a powerful tool for influencing public opinion. Under the pretext of allowing more "diversity of opinion", he is opening up the short message service to fake news and anti-democratic conspiracy fantasies - and thus to the Kremlin's disinformation warriors and the networks of their western sound amplifiers. Billionaires like Musk or Peter Thiel embody a new type of egomania that is reminiscent of the villains of the James Bond films and calls democracy into question worldwide." So my advice to you is to inform yourself beforehand about people who you portray in your videos as having integrity.
Oh, no, I'm NOT a huge fan of Elon. I think that was misconstrued...I was just saying that even "Mr. brain chip" talks about how AI might end up replacing us. There's a video on it.
@@MrsRealistic No problem, it was actually a misinterpretation, as English is not my native language. Things like that can happen because we are (fortunately) not an AI, which cannot interpret, only act. 😉 BTW, Since the two musicians Denny Zager and Rick Evans only formed a musical duo from 1969 to 1970 and only had this one worldwide Top 100 Billboard success, they are the biggest one-hit wonder of any artist at any time in recording history selling over 20 million records world wide. Denny Zager had already composed the song in 1964 in only about half an hour. It was only after he and Rick Evans played the song live in 1969 and the audience liked it that they decided to record it. And the rest is history, except that In The Year 2525 is and will be probably one of, if not the most covered songs of all time.
@antarcticaaficionado Well, I wouldn't have known! Your English is really good! Thanks for that extra info about them! I'm glad I got to hear this one 😁👍
They even have made Wall E type floating seats that was displayed at CES, where you control it with your mind. Think if that kind of technology got into the wrong hands?
As was already mentioned, the video is clips from “Metropolis,” a 1927 German movie (keep in mind what was happening in Germany; Weimar and starvation, Hitler was rising through the ranks).that might be thought of as the tinfoil hat scenario of the day.
Great memories...... But.....second line: if men is still alive............ Think this is the most important line. Since then (a little bit earlier) mankind had the first time the ability to erase itself........ Nowadays the question is more: will mankind be enslaved by AI or be erased ...either by itself or by AI.....which.....developed enough doesent need humans anymore....... Nobody back then thought we will have phones for the pocket ....... Our signal to come home had been the street lights....... You can spend an philosophical night on that song............

If you want another artist with something to say about tech, read Olaff Stapledon's classic story, 'Last and First Man,' He was an ethhics philosopher in ghee twenties during WW1. Noone was interested in his serious books so he tried to 'teach' with sci-fi (something his friend H.G Wells was doing. But, unlike Wells, Stapledon was anti-tech, ecause, he maintained, technology holds Manking back from its true potential.) Besides being dangerous~ Oh, and the was a woman 400 years ago who wrote on of the first sci-fi books. She visits a parallel world tgat has invented what we nowadays know as a nuclear bomb. She is Margaret Cavendish. Her book is called The Blazing World appropriately..

You needed to let the video play fully through. You see the lady on the table basically die as her persona or essence is transferred into her replacement. Kind of like the period at the end of the sentence.
Oh gosh! I didn't even see that part (I just looked now!) I apologize! I normally try to stop the video before it goes on to the next up... but I totally thought it was over! Thanks for letting me know!
We watched the planet of the apes (the reboot with Mark Walberg) with the kids the other day and the beginning supposedly takes place in 2029. We kind of all chuckled.
IVF (test tube babies) was first successfully done on a non-human mammal in 1959. First human attempt 1973. First successful human IVF birth - 1978. So, yes, people knew about IVF in 1969.

Human nature is and always has been the danger, it never really changes much no matter the technology, hence the line at the end of the song, "Maybe it's only yesterday..."
" you'll pick your sons daughters too from the bottom of a long glass tube" It's ironic, or more prophetic that just 9 years after this song came out, the first "test tube baby" was born! In the 60;s and 70's there was no such thing as "being canceled" From what I understand Denny Zager didn't like the fame. He's still living and makes guitars.
All you have to do is pay attention to what is going on in our society the past 15 years or so and then you can see how relevant this song is today.

I believe the name of the movie with Sylvester Stallone was Demolition Man. With Sandra Bullock
Yes...I remembered it while I was editing 😆👍
Also known as "Exordium & Terminus" this song went to number 1 on Billboard in the U.S and stayed there for 6 weeks. In my opinion it's the most apocalyptic song of all time, and no remake can come anywhere close to its emotional appeal and thematic depth. So popular is it worldwide that It's been covered over 60 times in 7 languages.
Wow! That's amazing!
I might add the movie "The Matrix"...especially the beginning... Excellent song and reaction.
Yes! That too!
They wrote some genius songs in the 60's. Another one is Eve of Destruction.
Thank you!
Why would they be cancelled? Why do people get so weirded by this song?
It simply speaks truth.
@AJRabies I'm not weirded out by this song at all. It's just a funny title because apparently they were a "one hit wonder". I'm 100% on board with it... because it's clearly predicted the future... which is now our present.
@@MrsRealistic I could tell you got it. I have seen other reviewers get touchy & nervous about this song.
I wonder if the song will make it to that year?
@@AJRabies At the pace mankind is going, I doubt humans make it to even 2225! Just look at what has happened in the past 100 years.........humans will be extinct by 2525.
Zecharia Sitchin had a theory that our society and technology is catching up with the previous earth civilization . Apparently the last civilization was destroyed by technology.
I wouldn't be surprised at all!
I remember this song from back then. I loved it. It was a bit creepy, but that was fine with me. I think Evans is still a teacher down in Arizona or New Mexico. Or at least he was a year or two back.
Have you ever Met Evans? was curious what he was like
1984! Beautifully said!
My dad said this was a great song in the day he was born 1949 he's 75. Do we have any corvyx lined up?
We the people do not decide if we adopt AI but a small elite do .True democracy does not exist anywhere on this planet.
Very true! We don't hold any power, but they try to make us think we do.
"If woman can survive" having their bodies legislated. I was 17 when this came out.
Margaret Sanger and Eugenics. The birth of PP.
i love this song in the year 2525 i think it found this music on youtube in the 2000s and i also want to talk about i love embrace change for what it is i don't think it's a bad unatural thing to me it's not a problem dangerous to me i don't fear change and ai i see it as a good natural thing to me i just love both organic and arificial equally that's just me that's just my honest unpopular point of view take.
if you're really interested in this type of thing, try listening to Paul Harvey ''if I were the devil'' recorded in 1965, you'll be amazed how spot on he was
Yes, that's one of my favorites. He was FAR ahead of his time!
Scary Times. Gonna Be Like Putting Out A Fire With Petrol. Great Song, Great Reaction As Usual.
Very true!
i heard the song when i was a kid
Demolition man was a visionary movie.
It sure was!
BTW, Since the two musicians Denny Zager and Rick Evans only formed a musical duo from 1969 to 1970 and only had this one worldwide Top 100 Billboard success, they are the biggest one-hit wonder of any artist at any time in recording history selling over 20 million records world wide.
I don't think they were cancelled. This was just a one-off.
Yep this is one of the well known one-hit wonders, I'm old as dirt and recall it first time round.
10,000 years? Oh, It will all happen far sooner than that.
Fascinating, isn't it? You might find 'Stephen Fry describing our future with artificial intelligence and robots' an interesting watch too.
Thank you!
The irony is all of the imagery in the video is 30s or 40s movie footage……
The song writers were viewing on those old movies and commenting on their relevance in the same way we are today when we look at their music.
@@mburkitt7678 Huh?
The imagery is from the film Metropolis which was pre talkies, 1920 something. Stunning effects for 100 years ago.
They even have made Wall E type floating seats that was displayed at CES, where you control it with your mind. Think if that kind of technology got into the wrong hands?
Yeah, that doesn't seem like a positive invention at all.
There are like six or seven different versions of this song 😢😢. I have heard it a million times, since I was a child
As was already mentioned, the video is clips from “Metropolis,” a 1927 German movie (keep in mind what was happening in Germany; Weimar and starvation, Hitler was rising through the ranks).that might be thought of as the tinfoil hat scenario of the day.
Good point!
So true! AI is the dumbest thing to ever be invented.
@@MrsRealistic Not so fast. Nuclear weapons may yet have the final "mic drop".
The best movie about genetics and what can and is happening now is the movie Gattaca.
I LOVE that movie!!
Other impactfull songs around when I was a teen in the 60's. "Eve of destruction" Barry McGuire , "Walk me out in the Morning Dew" originally written and performed by Bonnie Dobson in 1961. You'll be pleased to note, she was Canadian. Tell me what was it about Canada, back then! Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, WOW!
Yup so true... Canada has produced some amazing artists!
But you need to read....look down again 😅
no , it wasn't even being talked about until the 80... they were predicting and they sure came very close.
And where are you, Mrs. Robinson?
I'm not sure I understand the comment...or if you're referring to me as "Mrs Robinson" from the movie/song...(I guess that makes me old) but I'm in Texas. 👍
You're my favorite YouBoomer!
Ha ha! Thank you!!
I'm old enough to remember this song when it first came out everything that was said never happened yet the first test tube baby was born July 25th 1978 in Oldham General Hospital Manchester UK I remember my mama tell me one day when we talk on the phone we'll see each other I laughed and told her you watched too much Jetsons cartoons I read on the internet China is building female robots
It's pretty crazy isn't it?!
Yes I loved this movie Atlas
I was a kid when this came out so I didn't really appreciate the message back then. It makes more sense now!
Yeah, back then it was just one of those "conspiracy theories" ;)
@@MrsRealistic Or even more cluelessly, just another pop song.
@@littlegiantproductionsandr3091 Exactly!!
It's called "lesser magic". "They" are bound by rule that they have to tell you the truth to protect themselves from the "magic" backfiring on them.
Logan's Run is only 250 years away. It's 2274 there. 251 years after 2274, it'll be 2525.
We watched the planet of the apes (the reboot with Mark Walberg) with the kids the other day and the beginning supposedly takes place in 2029. We kind of all chuckled.
In 1969, we knew about eugenics from WWII, and also Star Trek. But the test tube baby wasn't a thing yet,
@sherigrow6480 wow, I didn't think so! That's crazy that they mentioned that then!
IVF (test tube babies) was first successfully done on a non-human mammal in 1959. First human attempt 1973. First successful human IVF birth - 1978.
So, yes, people knew about IVF in 1969.
1978 the first test tube baby was born
It will not be 'all good' when autonomous AI is birthed.
The heavens above have warned us. My avatar is literally visible on Red Nebula 2014. A face I found (oddly looks like my own), is half human, half robotic. [ using shareware GIMP] Visible under "FILTERS>ENHANCE> narrowband HIGH PASS FILTER with maxed CONTRAST (The _Constant_ ) and minimal STANDARD DEVIATION.
[the rest under COLOR heading] low EXPOSURE, adj. Saturation, hue chroma, color balance, color temperature.
OH' so where is it. Go to the "Red" Nebula NGC 2014, and in the lowest spot of the blue in the main body of the red nebula (disregard blue _outside_ the nebula). You'll see, believe it or not a female astronaut in an orange jump suit. You can partially see her with your naked eye looking at a good closeup of the nebula. After you bring her in with the above steps look in her belly area. That's where you'll see my avatar.
I mean, we've already kinda got the pill thing with Ritalin.
Yesss... Good point!!
I'm embarrassed.Almost 52 years and never heard this till a couple years ago.As a teen I listened to everything dmfrom Buddy Holly to Chuck Berry to the Greatful Dead Doors to Glam Rock and some how never heard this...this song is scarey seeing the political climate
They were ahead of their time I guess!
Human nature is and always has been the danger, it never really changes much no matter the technology, hence the line at the end of the song, "Maybe it's only yesterday..."
Pills you took ..... - Huxley/Brave New World. Give a read
Huxley and Orwell were so ahead of their time!
Ich bin kein Boomer.
Ich bin Genx.
Zufällig bin ich auch Deutscher und dieser Song weisst eindeutig auf eins hin.

It's really pretty freaky. I'd love to hear what they think about their song today!
