I was lucky to have played the premier performance of this, conducted by Alfred in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. The piece was commissioned by the Superintendent of Music for the Essex County School Board, Mr. Ernie Gerenda. I was the lead clarinettist on that and a subsequent performance in Windsor; again conducted by Mr. Reed. I reintroduced myself to Alfred at the Midwest conference some years ago and we had a great chat after a Chicago Symphony concert. Great man!
Oboe player here from Halifax, Nova Scotia, and I gotta say, this is one of the greats. Every musical theme that gives me chills, whether it's the melodic song of 4:40, or the racing tempo, while keeping it light, at around 7:00, this piece has it all. It's all so well packaged too, I find myself thinking up stories to explain the themes of the music whenever I put headphones on and close my eyes. Just absolutely remarkable.

The horn soli... My favorite thing about this piece
I heard this song because of a school assignment and I am so happy this song found it's way to me.😊
This is a marvelous testament.
This was my favorite piece that I played in high school. Beautiful!
Same!
Same.
Same
also same LOL i got to play the 1st horn part; my most memorable high school solo moment
Yours too?! Thank god for TH-cam. My band wasn’t that good. Oboes a quarter-step apart was the most traumatic experience I had in band 😖

I switched from bass clarinet to timpani for this piece just to have the feature at the end :D
great performance of this classic work. really pushing that temp tho.

when i hear this, I imagine a fox hunt in Virginia, the hunters riding past stately plantation homes in pursuit of the fox.
