It still amazes me that such mighty locos have such camp horns.
You can almost heat Alycidon chirping "ooooh, I did it, didn't I darling?" as it passes.

Not how I remember them blasting the Tunnels at Waverley before arrival from the South in the late 1970s.A horn that meant business from my memories.

Thats what I call a locomotive !!!! I used to lie awake at night and listen to these blasting down the East Coast mainline through Newcastle in the 70's, such an iconic sound of sheer power !!!! So nice to see it has both Napiers installed. Not a banker in sight !!!!!!

You’re bang on, as a boy in the 70’s I lived about 1 mile from Peterborough station and in the still of night a Deltic on full chat on the main line or pulling out of the station made the hairs on the back of your neck stand up…. I still have the pleasure of hearing a preserved Deltic on the NVR on occasion. What a locomotive

beautiful noise of the Napier engines takes me back to the'60's and the regular trips from Grantham to Kings Cross. I used to remember all the names of the stations en route. When one of these trains flew through the station, the place shook. We used to manufacture stuff ourselves in those days-Amen.

One dark night, we were on a railtour heading up the bank. Battered old RES class 47 with 13mk1s on. We hit the bank at a pace, but eventually ground to a halt. Needed a push from a 66 coming up behind on a freight...
The way the deltic just conquered that, shows what a different dimension/league of loco they were

Horse power players a large part too. 3300 hp against 2500/2750 depends on which class 47 it was.

And speed at botom is not the end of story....too fast and as speed drops on hill field diverts slow to drop back and you lose momentum then back to lower field divert and before you know it your under 10mph struggling 😊

You were unlucky. On my first visit to the Lickey, in 1972 and about 3/4 way up the bank, the very first train up was a Class 47 with 14 on. I was amazed, and it was growling a bit at about 20 mph, but that load caused it no problem. Next up was a "Western" with 10 on, and taking it very easy.

Great video, I remember these locos from when I travelled into Kings Cross every day in the 60's.and 70's.on the way to work. Sadly these days idiots hang out fo the windows be it steam or diesel, it just knocks the edge off the video, people sat in their seats for the journey back in the day.

    • @MarshSteamVideosTM
      @MarshSteamVideosTM  3 ปีที่แล้ว

I guess you pay you money and you want to hear the sound of Deltic up close. Without the paying passengers in question its unlikely this excursion would of gone ahead. The amount of heads out of the window was only due to the fact they were going up the Lickey. Once over the top I'd imagine the majority would of returned to the seats.

A fine example of two stroke diesel oily fumes - probably worse than any steam engine's fumes (so long as the coal used was good quality low sulphur steam coal). Today sadly many steam engines have only poor quality coal available which produce choking sulphurous fumes.

      Information courtesy of delticsounds.com
At 1 in 37.75, and about 2 miles long, the Lickey Incline is a classic challenge. The speed limit on the approach is 75mph. The first time a Deltic took on the challenge, was on one of the final railtours in BR ownership. 55022 hauled the "Deltic Venturer" tour on 28th November 1981, and reached the Lickey after nightfall. On the day, there was a temporary speed restriction of just 20mph at Bromsgrove, and the trailing load was 11 mark 1 coaches. Once clear of the restriction, the Deltic accelerated from 21mph to 30mph at the summit (refs.7 and 8).
The next assault by a Deltic came in 1997 with the same Deltic, under its earlier guise of D9000. There was a temporary restriction at the start again, but 50mph this time. With 12 heavy coaches (mark 1s with Commonwealth bogies), speed fell to 29mph at the summit (as logged by a friend of mine). I estimated that a balancing speed would have been 26mph, assuming the full advertised horsepower was available. On a subsequent run for Virgin Trains, with a much lighter 7 coach load, the full 75mph speed limit was back in force, and speed fell to 56mph at the summit, including a rare field reversion (field divert cutting out).
For comparison, here are some logged runs by other classes of loco (ref.8):
Class 31 with 10 coaches and banked by a pair of class 37s, started from a stand, took the summit at 32mph.
Class 45 with 12 coaches, started climb at 77mph, took the summit at 25mph.
Class 47 with 11 coaches, started the climb at 62mph, took the summit at 28mph.
HST set (7 coaches) started climb at 78mph, took summit at 60mph.
5MT steam engine, banked by a pair of 3Fs, with 12 coaches, started from a stand, took summit 14mph.
A fews weeks after D9000's 1997 ascent, a class 50 railtour with load 12 took the summit at 23mph. I don't know what its starting speed was? (Can't find my old reference for this run).

They could have put the turbos back on giving it over 6000Hp as found on mine sweepers and MTB - then there was of course torpedo run - battle power setting at > 7000Hp, but of course getting traction motors to match would be a problem.
