I was a boy of the forties, and although there might not have been as much for kids those days, there was little to compare to the thrill of standing on a railway platform and standing within touching distance and experiencing the power of these iron monsters belching steam and smoke and noise.
Love the Lickey Bank, and how they overcame the problems it caused. Great video, thankful for those who filmed it so future generations could catch a glimpse of how things were ❤
"Big Bertha" should have been preserved. There were a few people who tried to get it saved, but the (mis)management would not comply. Such a historic locomotive, the biggest and most powerful that the Midland Railway ever built. Same rotten scenario at Crewe, where the very last 3 examples of LNWR large express passenger locomotives were scrapped, by order of the short sighted, narrow minded (mis)management, despite a valiant attempt by more sensible people to hide them away in safety: the very last "Claughton" 4-6-0, the very last "George the 5th" 4-6-0, and the very last (ex-L&Y) "Dreadnought" 4-6-0 (if I remember right). Sacrilege anyway. :-(
We used to cycle over to a bridge over halfway up, it took ages for the trains to reach it. Put pennies on the line, had to watch out for bankers silently coasting back down. Big Bertha and Garret were spectacular.
hi there, great video, its a pity the clowns got rid of Big Bertha, inspite of there being a spare boiler, there is a model of it coming out soon. RIP old girl,
Ginty Tanker, I sorry as a 70yr old Suvern Brit Ginty Bankers, sound too much like Merchant Bankers Slang, I still remember watching the wheeltappers and shunters club on a Saturday night TV, 🤣🤣🤣 bugger my face muscles are starting to ache, it's worse than captain Pugwash, Thank you whoever I owe for bringing my memories of coal dust everywhere back to me,
Used to hear the wheels spin on the steam in amongst Garringtons hammers from my bedroom. At the top of stoney hill. Kept train spotting or helping folks up tardibigge flight of locks till I was 12 and started go further. Never had any trouble at the trains or the canal but times where a lot more violent and bad stuff happened in Bromsgrove. But watching the trains and working the locks was fun. They kept 2 diesel’s as bankers till the day I left that house at 19 years old.
I nearly didn't watch this, another poor quality film of a loco sttruggling up th Likey I thought but it turned out to be a great film, best quality I've seen of this era

What a fantastic, fascinating video.
Thanks for sharing.
Great mix of motive power presented as well.
Unfortunately, no Lickey Banker!

What a super video, a memory never to be forgotten !
I'm old enough to remember being banked up the Lickey.
I vaguely remember getting the same train from Birmingham back in the mid sixties with my Nan,! ,,
Very good!
Lovely video....never went to Bromsgrove but reminded me of my trainspotting days in the late fifties and early sixties. Great memories!
How it used to be. An incredible generation indeed.
