    About 10 years ago, the Sci-Fi Channel acquired syndication rights for the original Star Trek television series. For years, the shows had been cut down to fit the amount of commercial time needed for current day programs (there was less commercial time during the original 60's run). Sci-Fi fixed this problem by making the time slot a full hour and a half. Dubbed "Star Trek The Sci-Fi Channel Special Edition", the episodes would be supplemented with original interviews with the cast and crew discussing each episode. The interviews and extra bits were especially entertaining since it featured more than just the standard cast but also highlighted guest actors, writers, etc.
    I taped each and every episode as they aired (even though sometimes I hit record a little late and missed a minute or two). The interviews and extras really are neat, and since I've never seen them on youtube, I decided to dig out the tapes and start grabbing out all of the extra bits. I've found probably 75% of the tapes so far, and I hope to find the rest eventually. I hope it's okay with Sci-Fi if I post these. I'm just trying to get them out there for those who may have missed these years ago....
    These are the extra bits from the episode "The Return Of The Archons". Enjoy, and be sure to subscribe to catch them all. Oh, and if you have time, check out my daily blog on all things Trek: www.apieceoftheaction.net/

    I watched and taped theses episodes as they aired as well. Time snd circumstances (as well as no more VHS's) intervened so Im glad someone else has kept these "historical records" for posterity. (Best Galaxy Quest alien laugh!) 🤓😎🖖🏻

    These episodes aired late 90's. The interviews and back-stories were good to watch.

    I started watching TOS because I loved the newer series and wanted to do my homework. This was the first episode (after like 15) about which I thought - hey, this is actually great!

    How bizarre that this vignette begins and ends with some brief remarks about the actual episode and yet for the vast majority of time in between merely gives broad cultural boilerplate and quaint anecdotes that have nothing to do with _The Return of the Archons_. Well, perhaps that's not entirely true. One wonders indeed whether George Takei was still under the spell of Landru during his remarks.

    This episode is the perfect example of why I love the Original Series and range between like and tolerate to the others. Individual liberty individual rights, individual creativity and potential, freedom is worth fighting for, sacrificing for, even dieing for that to be a part of a collective however blissful is to be as dead. All these principles are not only implied but stated emphatically and drive the motivation of the plot. How much better than the vegetarian space socialists who are always right.

    "Of the Body" -= Cult relegion ...obvious reference to Christianity in it's most narrow minded form, but which began quite differently, 'Archoms' itself is an ancient relegious concept - look it up on Wiki! One of my very favorite episodes.

    • @lisasilvas5914
      @lisasilvas5914 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      andyrauf Logical assumption - or perhaps a Cult of Atheism where the state is the body! A soulless society run in machine like fashion by the central planning of a lifeless computer where the state is all - either way group dynamics overwhelm individual freedom. ARCHONS are the Hidden Rulers according to ancient Gnosticism - they control our world by keeping us in perpetual conflicts and chaos! I've always wondered why the brief mention about Archons at the beginning of this episode - a subtle clue by the writer? Hmmm.

    • @erentheca
      @erentheca 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's far broader and more interesting than a myopic critique of Christianity.

    Actually, if all those computers had been really smart, and not just operating from programming, Kirk could have negotiated his way out without violating the Prime Directive. He could have offered Landru withdrawal from Beta III and a quarantine of the planet from further Federation visits in exchange for turning off the microwave beams and allowing the landing party to beam up (as well as de-absorbing, if it was possible, O'Neill and Sulu). Same with Vaal. I just don't believe those respective computers were capable of making such bargains, any more than Nomad could be talked out of its prime function.

    Oh how disappointed was when I discovered *Scotty* or should I say James Doohan wasn't in fact Scottish. But it is a testimony of how well he played the character. You know I really Really believed he was Scottish. I guess as a youngish fan I just didn't want reality to intrude on the fantasy........ ☮️⚛️
