So did I. I worked with him on Set, Reset and also on ROCI. I worked with him in the NY studio and also visited him on Captiva where he did a panel of me that is now part of the 1/4 Mile Painting. I know David White as well. Bob was an incredible artist and wonderful human being. I was very honoured to have known him. I wasn't aware that Bib had painted portraits. It really is a stunning painting. I think "earliest known" would be the safe term and it may not even be correct. May be a good reason the professional just steered clear of that bit, I'd expect the curator would have noted as much on the 2001 authentication. In any case pinning a first to any artist is kinda shady, they all have tons of work made before any decent work ever comes to fruition.

I'll be honest, I had never heard the name of the artist. But to think you have a before-fame work of an artist who later became famous - that shows a bit of their way to fame, their youth, their development. It's the beginning of a journey, if you will. Much more exciting than just a painting that someone bought.

David Fenton because to me it sounds like he started his art career with his father. By what he said. They went to an art show together before they shipped out. And then he says “I think I can do that”. And I mean to me he said a couple days later he tried to do a portrait and so his dad was his first painting period. I think out of everything men do before shipping out going to art shows with men and painting them sounds pretty special. I would think that would make this his most valuable piece of art!

I'm fascinated the owner is sitting so close the painting, that he's literally spraying it with his breath. Hopefully hearing what its worth he'll put it under glass. 🤦‍♂

It's a Rauschenberg and a portrait of a hot, young man. I think it would fetch more.

Rauschenberg was gay, so I doubt either man was confused about the attraction.

There is a not-zero chance that this guy's dad totally got it on with Rauschenberg in the 40s. Just saying.
