I’ve played magic in the 90s and I’ve never seen a full set of power 9. Seeing at 9 at one time is like you’re at a museum. You’re gonna have to go to a convention to see a full power 9. You can go to all the card shops in your city and won’t even see all power 9 in one spot let alone a lotus. The lotus card is so beautiful, I’ve seen the black lotus one time in my life when I was playing this game in my younger years and that card is like a piece of art.
Let me know when this woman has a yard sale. She'll probably be selling off her husband's first edition Spidermans and 24k gold bars for ten bucks a pop.
Are first edition Spidermans worth anything though? I mean I've got 3 sitting in a bookcase and last time I checked I was only offered like $15 for them.
I'm very glad the Roadshow individual gave such an eloquent description of the cards in the binder, particularly the Power 9, to help give an apt description of why they're so valuable and sought after. Expected cringe, got actually nice content that, had I not known of the Power 9 and the ABU print runs already, would've been very informative!
He actually had mistakes in there, for example unlimited was despite it´s name anything but unlimited. It is estimated we have about 3-3.5 k of each beta rare and about 17.5k of each unlimited one. So there is only about 6 times as many unlimited cards as there is beta cards. Also the way the cards are sorted in the binder makes me highly suspicious this was done to present them for the show. No set collector would sort his cards that way, it makes no sense.
@@terryfeynman oh sure, I was certain the unlimited info was overstated as well. And yeah, they may have, but frankly, who cares if they did reorganize the cards?
What a fun and exciting appraisal. My daughter knew Christopher Rush a couple of years before his passing. She said he was a very nice person. He even made original artwork for her that he signed.
Holy crap, I’m old - when MTG that you played in your teens and 20s is on “Antiques Roadshow”, you know life is now over. 😂 Also, the guy really knows his stuff! I was impressed.
My question is did her husband pass, is this some revenge selling of his stuff after a divorce? He obviously knew what the cards were worth since he had the power nine all on one page of the binder.
I think she is just one of those typical women that undervalue their menfolk and their hobbies and lives, and she finally went to ARS and got a wonderful taste of reality. I really hope he did not pass, because she has no idea what those could be worth with slabbing. I wanted to die at her unawareness.
Most likely he died and she's trying to sell off some of his stuff to pay for the funeral expenses. Maybe cover any outstanding debts that have been passed into her. Everyone is so quick to be hateful here but I can see none of you know what it's like to live in the real world.
I assume you don't have the memory of roughly shuffling these cards on pizza grease covered tables then just throwing an elastic around the deck and tossing it in a backpack to scrounge up 3 bucks so you can maybe if you're lucky get a Shivan Dragon and not some stupid artifact mana trash.
Yeah...no current MTG set produced in the last 10 - 15 years will ever come anywhere near as valuable as those Beta cards. A complete set of cards produced in the 2010s might be worth a few thousand dollars in the 2030s or 2040s, but that's about it. Trying to hoard things like this, expecting them to become valuable in 30 years because the originals did is like people starting to "collect" comic books in the 1990s because they saw the amount of money people were paying for things like _Amazing Fantasy #15,_ or _Detective Comics #27._
My parents saw this and were like "do you still have your Magic cards?" as if I didn't know that I started playing during Revised and don't have any power 9 cards...
Could be worse, I had most of the Alpha cards, a set of Beta a bunch of loose beta and almost a full set of Unlimited along with a fair amount of Arabian Nights, Antiquities and Legends that I sold for 850$ in 1995. Oopps
What I love about this is how you can see the guy (Travis) is actually an MTG fan who knows what he's talking about. I usually cringe when I see "experts" talk about mtg having no clue what they're talking about. This guy is a real one.

I got in on Magic the Gathering when it first came out. Had quite a few Alphas and like 2 sets of the Betas. Sold it like 3 years later for 7000 dollars. Bought a car and bought a computer which led to a career in IT. Pretty good investment in my opinion.
You have to realize that when Magic the Gathering first came out and was played parents were ABSOLUTELY FURIOUS. It was the Dungeons and Dragons scenario all over. "The kids are pretending to be wizards so this is obvs devil worshipping obvs." It was VERY common for parents to get enraged and throw out ENTIRE SETS of Magic the Gathering cards. I was raised in the bible belt of the midwest and this happened so many times it makes me sick. The sheer awe of being around these cards is just .. idk. It's crazy. Back in the day if you saw the Black Lotus played you knew quickly a Channel/Fireball was probably about to happen. Magic the Gathering was/is truly awesome. It's like chess in playing cards.
It's just scarcity. These cards can never be reprinted, and there are only so many in existence. The price is simply whatever the richest interested party is willing to pay. It only takes one fan with an 8 figure bank balance and bingo, $100k is really not a big thing at that level.
@@Redskies453I agree with the scarcity and the subjectiveness of the value. However, I think these cards can be reprinted but obviously the first cards would have some valuable traits compared to their reprints such as their originality and physical features that only those cards would possess. The reprints would have value as well; just not as much. Take holographic "Charizard" cards for example from Pokemon TCG base set and "XY Evolutions" set. The reprint from "XY Evolutions" has considerable value given the right condition and print (google shopping). Will they be reprinted is unknown. Thank you for taking the time to read.
@@garcia-buckner7702 There is a legal issue with reprinting some cards. The publisher has stated that they will not reprint any of the cards on their "reserved list" and there is a legal argument with precedent that this constitutes a passive contract with current owners of the cards to protect the value of the cards. If they were to reprint those specific cards they may be liable to compensate collectors for the loss in value.

@MyGun4hire i dont think so, if the owner of those cards knew the current value of them, they would def. not still be in that binder. i remember in 1995 the mox set was a couple hundred bucks at my local shop and i was like no way, who would pay that... if i only knew

He either knew his stuff really well before hand, or is researchers did a top notch job of collating the info and writing the script. Either way, great delivery and very accurate presentation. Incredible collection.
The way he was getting excited, I feel he is a huge fan of the game
these shows are always scripted out, the person brings in the stuff off camera and then they do some prep work before cameras ever turn on
Somewhat. I'd argue what he said is pretty common knowledge but I could be wrong. I've played the game for 20 years so I have no idea if new players know that stuff or not - even though it seems like it's common knowledge.
I find it interesting that they didn't mention the reason why Volcanic Island was not in Alpha was a printing error. You also get fun stuff like Cyclopean Tomb not having a mana cost in Alpha as well.
Antiques Roadshow has experts in dozens of areas. This was probably their trading card expert.
One error I caught was that he said the point is to bring your opponents life points to 0. Actually, the point is to win the game and several mill players would say life total its irrelevant.

@@aladorngm no it is not, you can simply see the cards on the other page of the binder.
She looks disgusted lol. Shes been telling him to throw them out for years.
Let me know when this woman has a yard sale. She'll probably be selling off her husband's first edition Spidermans and 24k gold bars for ten bucks a pop.
Not after this she won't lol.
Well, no. That's why she went to a professional grader and not to a yard sale. you're just mad.
Are first edition Spidermans worth anything though? I mean I've got 3 sitting in a bookcase and last time I checked I was only offered like $15 for them.
You wouldn't be honest and tell her what she actually has?
This was explained so wonderfully well great job Travis!

What a fun and exciting appraisal. My daughter knew Christopher Rush a couple of years before his passing. She said he was a very nice person. He even made original artwork for her that he signed.
She was banging him xD
Dude, that artwork is probably worth so much now. Obviously I’m sure she’d still like to keep it, but I’d get it appraised for insurance

Also, the guy really knows his stuff! I was impressed.
This was super awesome - holy cow!!!
That's my wife with my comics until she learned how much they're worth
Most likely he died and she's trying to sell off some of his stuff to pay for the funeral expenses. Maybe cover any outstanding debts that have been passed into her. Everyone is so quick to be hateful here but I can see none of you know what it's like to live in the real world.
And now you are quick to hating too
He committed suicide from all the nagging she gave him about collecting toys, cards and comics.
My heart stopped when I saw that black-border Black Lotus.
Further more throwing away all the alpha cards you havw because its cheating to play with weird cut cards,

@@VinL82 pro tip
Yeah...no current MTG set produced in the last 10 - 15 years will ever come anywhere near as valuable as those Beta cards. A complete set of cards produced in the 2010s might be worth a few thousand dollars in the 2030s or 2040s, but that's about it. Trying to hoard things like this, expecting them to become valuable in 30 years because the originals did is like people starting to "collect" comic books in the 1990s because they saw the amount of money people were paying for things like _Amazing Fantasy #15,_ or _Detective Comics #27._

True. Remember that many expensive paintings are just paint on canvas.
