I would never have thought that would have cruise control, electric seats and aircon in 1989. Well done for keeping it on the road. The previous owners must be really happy to see it go to a good home.

American cars had all of that in the 1950s and had hand built cabins like Bentley cars today. They also had dashboard sensors that could auto dim lights when it sensed on coming car.
The truth is there has not been much innovation in cars for many many decades.

Had one of these many years ago. Its still the most comfortable car I've ever owned. Remember driving 6hrs from Manchester to Bude in Cornwall with only one bathroom pitstop. Felt as fresh as a daisy when I got there. Great cars.

I've had two of these, a 'D' reg and an 'L' reg both 2.9 in Ghia trim - absolutely fantastic cars, smooth, extremely comfy, plenty of power, ,lots of gadgets. Only downside was fuel economy as I would average about 23mpg in normal driving, although on a long run if I set the cruise control to 70mph I could get it up to about 34mpg.
Yours is an excellent find and looks in extremely good condition. Well done!

I was born in 1983 and everything about this car, the roar of the engine, the shape of the exterior and dashboard takes me back to childhood!!
I'm watching this in 2021 and I'm amazed, given the vast number of these on the roads in the 80s &90s they are now virtually non existent on UK roads! It's a real shame
Also it's so weird to think of this as a company car!!!

    • @bighands69
      @bighands69 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Very few older cars stay on the road because of all the government regulations that exist. Even tax and insurance will penalize older cars.

  •  4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

I'm glad you saved this old hero, it looks perfect! Sounds lovely too.
I'm glad those vile turd banger racer types didn't get their grubby little mitts on it. They seem to delight in ruining cars which are already in very short supply like these.
    Awesome, enjoy the old beast!

I used to have a 1990 Granada Scorpio, unfortunately it wasn’t the V6 it was the 2.0 DOHC which came out with the very mild facelift in 1990 at the same time the saloon version was launched. Mine was white too but it wasn’t 2 tone, it had white bumpers etc. It was an awesome car and really well equipped with everything you could ever want.
I currently drive a 1998 mk2 Mondeo 2.5 V6 Ghia X with manual gearbox, the car is a superb and drives absolutely spot on, the 2.5 V6 is a gem of an engine. You just don’t get exciting cars like these anymore, instead we now live in a world of horrible bloated SUVs with downsized eco friendly engines designed to appease the environmentalists and politicians rather than the keen driver. Great video and great car mate.

I bought a Granda Scorpio similar to yours whilst at university. Bit of a trade up from the Renault 5 which was my first car. I think I paid about £2k for it, did over 70K miles in it, including holidays on a shoestring to the south of France. It never cost me anything other than a water pump. Beatiful design which still looks fresh to me, and the most comfy seats I have ever experienced!

Great video, much as I like the Mk1/2 I can appreciate these. My dad had a 2.0L Ghia and I remember being amazed by the rear legroom and refinement and standard ABS, the saloon and bug eyed follow ups weren’t a patch on this.

You’ve made my life day. I used to own the exact same one. I used to drive for an exec car service based in Elstree (think of posh mini cabs!) Regulars included the Hadley Green set - Jeremy Beadle, Richard Littlejohn, his neighbour Dennis Bergkamp and various from Elstree Studios. All were driven in my white Scorpio and none complained (although Littlejohn freaked out at me once when my AC failed on a hot day). I averaged a thousand miles a week and got the oil changed every month. I don’t recall it ever failing me. I loved that car.

Bought a 1986 Granada Scorpio in 1995 with the engine and Automatic gearbox gone for £850!. Put in a Nissan Bluebird 2,0 diesel engine which came out of my Opel Rekord and drove reasonably well. Takes me back. In 1982 my dad had a sierra ghia then in 1985 he got a Granada 1.8 gl in this shape. After the Sierra the gl Granada seemed basic spec but it was a step up in build quality and it had (amazing for the time) abs brakes.

Nicely done video. I own a US 1988 White Merkur Scorpio (my second one). They are truly under-rated vehicles. BTW, the rear arch rot happens here in the US too. I was fortunate to find an example from Oregon that was well cared for and the rear arches are intact. You covered all the main points. But one item worth mentioning is how well the Scorpio behaves on the highway at autobahn speeds. It just gets better the faster you go. Cheers..

My uncle had a J reg 2.0 Ghia years back, that he eventually scrapped in favour of a Honda Accord. 😕 Nothing against the Accord, it was a decent car in its own right. But the Granada was the far superior car IMO, much more comfortable and classy.
Yours is a lovely example. Hope she gives you many miles of service. Glad to see a Granada that hasn’t been turned into a pancake, whether through rust or idiots banger racing them to death.

It was gorgeous and is the car I most associate with my Granddad, along with the car he had after another Granada, it wasn't a Scorpio but an Estate in white, reg: L563 RVW. He sold it to an enthusiast who said he'd look after it and do it up in about 2012.

You got yourself a great car there, these need saving!
I have had a few of these the first was a 2.0 GLS could push this too 125 mph as on the speedo. Then went for the very rare 2.4 gls a very different car would get up and go when the spring was fully wound.
Then on to the next which I have had for 20 years with a long time in storage I didn't know they existed until I was left for dead from the lights, only found out they existed from talking to the guy at the Ford parts department he said "that would of been the Granada Scorpio Cosworth" that left you in it's wake.
Had to have one, got one after along search at a price i could afford, love the car could not part with it.
Was going to get it tuned to 450 HP maybe one day.
Not many of them left now the engines were ripped out of them used in Tvr's , Sierra's, P100's etc

I have an E plate Scorpio.
I love the standard 15" wheels on your F plate one. Mine had the 14" wheels, which when I bought it, had dreadful tyres on them too, so I bought a set of 4x4 7-spokes for it and put a set of Uniroyal winters on it.
Would still like a set of these 15"s for it too though (they were the 4x4 wheels on Granadas up to '88, then the 2WD Scorpio wheels onwards)

I remember my friends parents had one when I was a teenager. It was a K reg and it was dark grey, like almost black, body coloured bumpers, there wasn’t any black trim, it was all colour coded. And the rear lights were dark too. I remember being passenger in it and thinking it was fast as fck! It was an auto and I remember it used to push you back into your seat when his mum accelerated. Leather seats etc. Was a nice car 😎

Good video, celebrates these great cars well. I think they have a lovely design, especially the wraparound rear styling, and loads of luxury gadgets considering theyre from the 80s. It makes no sense to me that these are now less desireable than the smaller Fords of the 80s/90s. Back in those days, Sierra owners wished they could afford a Granada!
I've owned two mk3s and what I call a "mk4" before, have just bought another mk3.
The rear seat recliner is an odd one - some Scorpios have them, others don't.

That one was a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Ford did nothing different to this car, to make it stand out. The only clue was. 2x small 24v badges bellow the side repeaters on the front wings. Unlike the Mk1 & Mk2, you can get a lot of stuff in the Mk3 without needing the estate version.
I've had a full-height fridge freezer in mine as well as the sack barrow !
