It was so vile to look at but once inside it was on par for the day and above average for space who doesnt love that ruched black leather and plastic wood inserts? Sadly the omega 3.0 elite was so handsome it stole sales for fun. Shame as the engine in this was a goodun.

It wasn't just Ford that stopped making exec. models as a mainstream manufacturer. Rover stopped the 800 in '99) and Vauxhall/Opel stopped the Omega in '03. The Scorpio stopped in '98.
Ford bought Jaguar in '89/'90, so 8 years before Scorpio production ended.

I had a new-ish Ultima estate back in the day, which to me didn't look as radical (or ugly depending on your point of view) as the saloon version. Superb car for it's day, with an incredible spec. IIRC bought at approx 30% of the new list price when it was around 2 years old and with 30k on the clock, awesome amount of metal for the money. Went from the Ultima into an Omega estate, which wasn't nearly as nice. Wish I'd have kept it, the only reason I sold it was the electrical complexity - had lots of minor faults with the electrics.

To me the final version (like the one in your video) looked much better than the '95 model because of less chrome on the grill and the back end and the blacked out headlights.
But my favourite Scorpio is still the original version, but as a sedan as it was introduced in 1990.

      Really ?
Considering that this car was largely carry-over '85 Mk3 Granada, I doubt it.
Furthermore, as I work in vehicle design & development I can safely say that no vehicles are solely designed on computer, even today. Testing is still very much done on real components and real cars to verify the earlier computer simulations and only last year did I get to see some clay styling models of a car as part of its styling development.

I know Ford is a American car company and you can clearly see it's USA influence on the body styling especially the back.
The European designed Ford's look miles better in my opinion then this 4 wheeled saloon.
The interior is just a copy of the previous later type Ford Granada from the mid 1990s
which also had that v6 engine.
Personally I would go for the Ford Granada any day.
The Ford Probe was just a Toyota or Nissan that was re-badged by Ford,
hoping to bring back a coupe like the classic Capri, but it never worked because like I say the Probe was never a genuine Ford.
The Ford Puma was ok but was just a glorified Ford Fiesta with slightly better styling, the Puma drove ok but I was never impressed by it's overall performance.
The Ford Cougar was another bad decision from Ford, just buy a Ford Mondeo.
I like the Ford Focus it's a very good car to drive, and fairly easy to work on still,
the only engines that are crap in these new Ford's now are the Eco Boost engines as they have a design flaw,
basically the exhaust manifold is moulded as one unit into the cylinder head, which creates far too much heat which over time cracks the cylinder head, and can cost £££
There should be a recall on these engines as some don't even last 25000 miles.
They should have a separate cast iron exhaust manifold that is bolted to the cylinder head, so at least then the excessive heat can travel through and down the manifold, rather than being far too close to the inner workings of the aluminum cylinder head 😬

I can't see how this design was 'ahead of its time'... It was an attempt at a trans-Atlantic look (see the similarity to the contemporary Ford Taurus if you don't get what I mean) that didn't resonate with the public, a look that was openly ridiculed from day one by car designers and motoring journalists.
There hasn't been a single car produced since that can thank the Scorpio for inspiration, not one.
Now, in 2020, I could be kind and say it's a sort-of cool curiousity car but come on, let's be honest, can you imagine meeting your car-loving mates at the pub in one of these and managing to keep a straight face?
Personally, I can't imagine paying anything more than 'banger money' for a Scorpio, no matter how good a condition it's in.
The Ford Edsel was a failure but they became a classic in time. The Scorpio Mk.II has no chance of enjoying a similar re-evaluation. Even the Cosworth connection couldn't save it.

    • @bradleyjamesclassics
      @bradleyjamesclassics  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Jon Godfrey - thank you, an interesting prospective. I can see you are not a fan.
Thankfully however there are lots of people who love these rare old cars and the Cosworth version is the one they really love.
Funnily enough (most of) my car loving mates seem to love the Ultima’s I get in. But I realise opinions vary.
Interesting prospective you offer...however you haven’t changed my view on this old beast.

@@bradleyjamesclassics fair comment. I would never accuse the Scorpio of being a bad car because, styling aside, there was little to criticise. I'm more of a fan of the original Scorpio personally.

Horrible as it is on the outside the interior is even worse. Even Fisher Price would have sacked any of their designers if they came up with this. I had to drive one of these when I worked as a Chauffeur and hated being anywhere near it. Did I mention it was purple? Ford must have given these away cos who would buy one except a chav, which most Ford drivers are TBH. They are who voted for Blair and look where we are now. The only section of the population who are stupid enough to create an additional tax, and pay it, the Ford Tax. I ask you, how dumb they still are.
But to be fair, and tell the truth, which I do, it was nice to drive, and not just into a wall. So a Cosworth one intrigues me.

    • @davidkmatthews
      @davidkmatthews 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

They looked far better when viewed from the driver's seat! ;-) An absolute sales disaster in the UK, mainly blamed on the "American" styling at the rear and "frog-eyed" front. In its last year of manufacture, 1998/99, Ford sold only 6000 in the UK, whereas the Mark II Granada sold ten times that amount in the recession-ravaged UK during 1978/79. I seem to recall that Ford UK were actually expecting the Scorpio to be a flop and didn't even set a sales target for it!

I think that the general consensus was that it was a terrible looking car.
The Mk3 Granada looked great, especially on 4x4 7-spoke alloys in Scorpio spec. but this has bug-eye headlamps and a bulbous rear with an incongruent strip of rear lamps across the lower part of the boot and rear wing leaving a lot of metal above it.
I'm amazed that it got out of the styling studio but then, so did the Mk5 & Mk6 Escorts of a similar era.
