  • We were going to visit our livestock guardian dog puppy, but another upclose encounter with a bobcat means our plans are going to need to change. I just hope I can keep my ducks safe.

    About Gold Shaw Farm: Gold Shaw Farm is more of a farm-in-progress than an honest-to-goodness farm. Our dream is that someday we are able to transform our 150+ acre parcel of land into a regenerative and productive homestead and farm.

    Just a thought...if you can get your hands on a solar light with a long lead for the solar panel, you can mount the light inside of the duck house to put light inside, as it gets dark. Most of the time they will follow the light and get inside the building. I had a couple that were idjits, who would run in and out, but for the most part, the rest would stay in and wait for their supper. Can usually pick these up at TS fairly cheaply.

    • @WobblesandBean
      @WobblesandBean 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      LOL! Yes...ducks can certainly be idjits. I've known a few geniuses, though. A friend had timed coop doors, there's an initial opening where the ducks go in, and a second, final one in case there are any stragglers. The little shits taught themselves to ignore the first one and only go in on the second, so sometimes there'd be one caught outside and he'd have to go through the annoying process of overriding the security system. 😂

    • @haunted5594
      @haunted5594 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WobblesandBean yes! They are idjits, but they are certainly smart ones. I never did the timed doors for mine as I was usually home. I can see it though, the brats! Look I have chickens and I've had lurks, peafowl and meaties, but I love the geese and ducks. They're like a cat, if they love you, they will follow you anywhere and actually try to mind what you say.

    Hey Morgan, i wanted to tell you that for a while: Everytime i see your ducks walking down the ramp at your duck-house, my toes start to hurt because they are slipping and hitting their toes. I had a similar problem with one of my drakes on the pool-ramp and the solution was so easy. I painted the ramp with a thicker layer of red barn paint and sprinkled some sand into the paint while it was still wet. The paint will also protect the wood from rotting away.
    Greetings from West-Virginia

    I'm seeing this video again almost a year later. Allison always has brilliant ideas! Her idea on how Toby should be situated gave Toby the opportunity to survey the property so he would know the territory that would be his to guard. Toby...what an ambassador for the Maremmea breed! I am not a fan of dogs with long fluffy white fur. I have to say that Toby just has that magical personality to melt any heart with those eyes and nose that look like pieces of black coal that came off of the face of a snowman! His inquisitiveness, gentle ways and loyal companionship towards Morgan is all so overwhelming! When looking up Maremmea Dogs one of the videos of Toby being introduced to the farm comes up. He must of gotten a lot of views on that video!

    You know you might be better off getting an older already trained LGD and a puppy to learn from it. Certain breeds are not really mature enough for the task till they are 2.
    Alyson's plan sounds pretty good. Be prepared for barking.

    • @WobblesandBean
      @WobblesandBean 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That was my concern. Puppies are DIFFICULT. So, so difficult. It's just as likely to chase the ducks as it is any predators. A mature, already proven dog would be a better choice, but they're also more expensive and harder to find.

    LGD dig so a hot wire inside it's run at the bottom so that can be moved up with the snow or has to be dug free of the snow - if she/he digs under when it's little and learning it's job it will get the ducks - Mr and Mrs Bob Cat have to go and you might also need the help of a humane trap or 6 to get this under control especially why this puppy is learning over the next couple of years

    I’ve got two adult Great Pyrenees that I rescued at separate times. They’re both great additions.... my ducks stay out 24/7 ...they’ve got free access to the barn but choose to sleep outside...granted I do live in Ga ...so our weather is a tad warmer.
    You’ve got a great channel...just a small piece of advice....a bobcat will eat a puppy for a snack...and it will take time to acclimate your dog.
    Mine come in during the day to get a solid 8 hours of undisturbed sleep to keep them healthy. A raw duck egg cracked over the puppy’s kibble will help it with healthy fat and trace vitamins and minerals. All the best!

    It's winter, it's hungry, and it knows you have food. And, it's a dog. Dogs love people. The dog will love you if you love it first.

    Allison is beautiful!
    you're over 50K! Recent subscriber here. You had a stroke of genius with your "untitled goose game" video, bringing in a lot of non-farming viewers like me.

    Nice suit. You should wear it around the farm to show the ducks who the Chief Executive Quacker is.

    Well, that is one LOVELY bobcat. Glad you got your fence done. I have heard of others having a setup like this. With any luck, the dog will be a deterrent once it gets a bit larger. Good luck! And I'm glad you are figuring out how to live with wildlife nicely. You are a hundred percent correct in that the best deterrent is a sound pen.

    Allison had a great idea for the dog. You guys do work well together and you are sweet for listening to her and thinking over her idea. Some fellows would have not done so. I think her idea will help the puppy too. It is really tempting to chase chickens, ducks and geese or other livestock. You want him to learn the right things from the start. I look forward to more of your videos.

    Dammit Bobby stop scaring Mundungus! For the record I had a huge smile on my face when I heard Alison say to see the puppy! I am camera shy myself even though I am good in public. ;)

    Lol! Allison had that wide eyed Adam Schiff look of panic on her face when first on camera. Too funny.

    Yep. I think we all told you a few videos back he wouldn't leave, lol. My recommendation is a lawn chair and a .22
    Also, that Bob cat can and will kill a puppy despite the puppies size. It's a experience thing. I would say motion lights would be helpful but that bobcat is out and about during the day time so that may not work. I'd at least try to trap it.

    We have two guard dogs and we still lose a few chickens because we live on the edge of thousands of acres of woods. We secure our chickens at night which means the losses occur during daylight. We have seen a large fox running across the pasture. We just installed an electric poultry net fence around our chicken house to see if we can slow the losses down.

    Just found your videos and love your stuff! I watched this one after watching your more recent stuff--seeing you so nervous about the puppy and knowing how tight you and the Toby dog end up bonding made me laugh. Thanks for making things feel lighter in these weird times!

    It definitely is a good thing to listen to good advice. When I first saw that bobcat I was like oh dang! I'm glad it didn't do any damage before you caught it. I think the way you're setting up the dog run is a great idea

    that is a great idea, what if the guard dog area went all the way around the duck pen. This would protect the ducks from all sides while the dog and the ducks get used to each other. Love it. Keep up the good work!!!
