He is classic novice "farmer" . you don't throw meat carcass , invite wild animals/predators then expect them to go away ! They will stay till they get the last one of the animals/ducks they can eat. Only option is get 2 dogs. Feed the animal carcass (cooked ) to them as reward .
What are you on about. The last stuff he put out was eaten entirely by vultures. Not a scrap left for any actual predators. He lives surrounded by woods. The sound and smell of the birds alone lets predators in the area know they are there. It’s getting cold and they are gearing up for winter which drives them to extremes like going out from the cover of the woods into an open field occupied by humans. It’s normal. Has absolutely nothing to do with him putting some guts at the end of his field or him being a novice farmer. 🙄

Most homesteaders will throw dead stuff out into the woods. It’s not going to increase predation doing it once in a blue moon. After all much larger amounts of meat are found naturally in the woods when things like deer die naturally. Predators know that already dead animals stents something to note as special places to come back to. It’s not like animals just keep dropping dead in the same place over and over. Love watching the geese stretch their wings when they get up. Also like the way they tuck their bills into their wing to sleep. Looks so comfortable yet uncomfortable at the same time. The final shot is so restful, makes me want to take a nap...

Yes, coyotes can jump pretty impressive night never mind foxes and bobcats who can jump over 6ft those fences won't stop them. You are in desprate need of a livestock guardian dog not just for your livestock but your cats too. I've seen a video of a fox jumping over a fence and grabbing a cat out of somone yard.
Build a moat then double fence it, fil lthe moat with water and they wont dig into water. A good life hack and you get a double fence for protection. They can jump over the fence, but it's unlikely they will try to jump a double fence.

SUGGESTION: If you are going to test an electric fence with your hand, be sure to use the back of your hand as the current will make your hand jerk away from the wire. The way you touched it with the inside of your finger can make you close your hand around the wire.

Hi Morgan, great vids, I know it's probably superfluous but have you thought about your duck ramp at the new duck house ? Watching your vid I noticed how difficult it is for the ducks to climb up and walk down due to the cross slats and smooth surface - have you thought about covering the ramp with a coarse surface roof felt to give the ducks better traction ?

Predators hunt at different times and there’s apps that track their activity, pretty cool. So the electric fence has to be on 100% of the time. I’ve lost chickens and geese at all times of the day 😭
Yikes on the bobcat! Hoping the fence will do the trick. We've had cougars come into our urban neighborhood nearly every year for the past 5 years. It's unnerving. I can imagine how heartstopping that must have been. Lived the drawings of your farm and that book...what a great gift that was. Gifts from personal libraries are wonderful to get, especially when they have such great info in them. I hope you share some of those recipes.
That bob cat seems pretty comfortable. I dunno if one dog would be enough - perhaps a great Pyrenees, they're fiercely protective and one of the smartest working dogs around .. I seen donkey in the comments, great idea - maybe a horse. Good luck ! Love the videos !
I once hit my head on a beam in a low shared bicycle shed, which really hurt, so I took some old foam roll used to cover ground for sleeping bags, cut a piece to size and stapled it to the beam. Even if I hit my head on it, it doesn't really hurt now.
Keep your eyes peeled. Our friend in N.H. lost several meat birds to a bobcat that jumped over the electric fence like it wasn't even there. Our predator issue now is bald eagles. We've had foxes, owls, coyotes and mink too. The struggle is real for sure!

Spotted a bobcat next to my driveway/house once. Same month my barn cat, Tiger, showed up with a huge gash down the center of her back. Still have Tiger.

Remember that bob cats can jump easily 6ft to 9ft (dependant on size) to clearance obstacle so your best option is to clear some of the brush to see them coming and erect a secondary perimeter fence as precaution, by the looks of it this one has decided to make home in your patch because of the fresh game, so he will be back
Morgan, Best thing to do is to cut down all the high vegetation around the yard. It provides the cover for the predators to get close. Get someone to bush hog the entire barn yard. The electric fencing will not be much help in deep snow, unless you shovel it away from the fencing. I had to snow blow a path on both sides of my fencing up in AK. it was a daily chore all winter.
2 Pyrenees and 3 terriers. All outside only dogs. Terriers are on the job 29 hrs a day, and the Pyrenees are the muscle. Or one LGD and lots of electric fencing. Lol would a guardian llama work ? Yeah that wire fence you put up is very simple. I recommend you put some tensioners on the fence, too. That way if it gets looser than it should be, you can tighten it up. And the electricity the new fence line puts out is pretty nerve wracking. I have those wires on my own property and I’ve grown up with them.
Well, I think you are going to have to upgrade your security guards. I mean the cats are great, a bobcat and a coyote and a bear? Yikes! Kitty won't fare too well against that lot. Did you know that ducks and geese can sleep with one eye open? I never knew that until Matt at 50 Ducks in a Hot Tub told us. I like watching the ducks and geese on the lake down the road from us. The purpose of life is to enjoy and experience it. We can experience it directly as you do, going outside and living in the moment with the astounding natural world. People inside watching TV experience it vicariously through other people's direct experience, however it depends on what programs we are watching. Many programs are simply to fill time while we wait to die.
We have a bobcat we see once in a while. I call the wildlife guy and they appreciate knowing where they are. Other people call too and he's able to predict where the bobcat is going and when he'll get there.
Yeah, British here (are you British too) and for me the only predators really here are foxes. I don't think bobcats would dig under the fence, but it's probably best to put something there to deter ones that do. I think getting a guard dog (as a puppy) in spring could help too?
@@diannaclarke2758 I think I remember seeing videos about that. I would assume he has something to stop them digging but I don't really know much. The person above is correct on my Britishness so I'm not too sure about what can be done and what preditors are over that side of the pond.
@@badredraws Yep I'm British though definitely not knowledgable on what could be done against digging predators as a towny in Essex. ^^' A dog may work, the geese themselves are normally quite good guard animals too but he does already know these things I believe. Just hope no more animals die even though I understand why a preditor would attack farm birds especially in the winter.
@frigidkiller123456 , Pests , like Bobcats also kill moles and voles that can damage your fields and pastures , and they also kill mice and rats that get into your feed. Rats can also kill your chickens and ducks and especially the young ones. Are you really sure that you want to kill the Bobcat ? So that you can become the mole and rodent hunter ? Bobcats killing human beings ? Hmmmpf ! Maybe an unattended infant left outside over night ??
That's why you have normal cats, dogs can deter those other pests too, I'm not entirely sure but once the bobcat knows it can get easy food, it'll probably keep coming back, that's when it becomes a problem. So if he doesn't get a dog, only choice is to get rid of it.

A trick I use to test electric fences is to touch the wires with a long strand of grass: you will feel a little shock in your fingers but it's much much weaker than touching the wire itself, and you don't have to carry around the tester
Fence, moat and then another fence. Double fenced with moat which (usually) stops them from burrowing under it since they wont into a moat and they usually won't jump two fences. Cut all the grass around the fence so they don't have a hiding spot.
I feel your pain. Predator pressure was one of the primary reasons after 5 years of being a chicken farmer that I left the business altogether. The problem is, as one Midwestern farmer I knew put it , is that we no longer have trappers to keep control of these animals . Also if you want to keep your Ducks laying throughout the winter try putting some light on in the duck house. They need at least 16 hours of light a day to keep laying eggs . Good luck.
Apparently the "if you build it, they will come" quote is legit for most things. Build a farm and the predators will come. I wonder if solar motion lights out there might help any.
Wonder if thats what got your other duck in broad daylight 🤔 , that's to freaking close for comfort...I'd agree with getting some type of guardian dog ( maybe two ) ...try adding a few smaller wood slats on the duck ramp to help them with getting up and down , ducks are not very graceful and need all the help they can get 😂😉 Great video..be careful and stay safe out there
If you have any questions about electric fencing let me know. Also that bobcat isn't likely to climb the fence so much as jump it entirely. For coyotes and other predators I've found that leaving a radio on near the animals tuned to VPR or other channel with more talking than music helps keep them from coming too close. ~David E.
Bobcats are great to have around! They really take care of the rodents. But you do have to make sure the fowl are in protected enclosures. We have a resident bobcat that likes to spray the mailbox post each morning on his morning rounds. The bobcat is definitely interested in the birds. But you're far too big to be a consideration for stalking. You'll notice he gave you plenty of space and moved away promptly.
Sorry to hear about your predator problem but that's the way it goes when you raise birds. We had a fox around here and did not want to hurt it. So, we got a Parmak Super Energizer 5. Only about 180 bucks and it really lights up the perimeter fence. Probably spent as much on insulators as the charger. Right now it is pushing 1/2 a mile of poly wire and holding 12.5 - 13 K volts. Probably drop down when we add the rest of the fencing. I still use the electric net and solar charger to protect areas I want them to sleep in but with the perimeter lit up we have not seen that fox in months.
It makes me sad Morgan, that you have to be on alert for predators and you@ can’t just sit back and have Toby sit by you as son goes down and relax and enjoy your farm and watch the ducks on the pond and the geese go in and out of the water …But no instead you got to be stressed about this bobcat or other predators getting on your farm and I know that’s a part of life but it’s just so annoying. I’m really impressed that you know how to do all that electrical dancing around your property and around your animals so easily and quickly. It would’ve been nice if my dad could’ve done that on his farm…. Of course technology wasn’t the same back then either. Tonight, just at sunset I went for a walk with a friend who is also fighting cancer and after walking a while we went and sit at the gazebo where we live… Here in Iowa,It is a nice complex for 55 & Over , Who are independently leaving and no longer want to live in a home in the yard and do all that work; anyway it’s a beautiful place there’s an inch is a new high love it here! But when we sit down at the gazebo I got out my cell phone and I was showing him videos of Gold Shaw Fa rms…. He said this is just so beautiful especially the pond in the land and loved all of the animals as I do. He also lived on a farm growing up and one of his sisters also has the farm that his parents are just like one of my sisters has my parents farm. The more I watch your videos the more in love I fall in love With your place. You will should be so proud of what you’ve accomplished. I’m a little confused about something and maybe it’s because I’m not as computer savvy as you are but when I want to look back on your videos I don’t understand why I can’t find them in numerical order. When I was trying to show my friend a response to say you building the new ramp for the Geese/ducks, you were done in one day because you added something down at the bottom and I wanted to show him that… I And I love your video say one week ago one months ago two months ago and I know you put out a video every week. The bobcat can jump over 6 feet. So the fences are not that big of a deterrence, especially the one for the geese (even coyotes can jump over the one).
One thing I don’t miss about raising chickens in a very rural area is the knowledge that everything wants to kill them. You can do everything right and it can still go very wrong.
I'd get some farm dogs... and I'm not much of a gun person but I'd seriously look into it. Gotta protect yourself and your farm! Btw although possible deterrent that electric fence probably won't do much Bob cats can jump pretty high same with coyotes (we didn't believe it either but one hopped my neighbor's fence and got their chickens.)

Not sure if it’s bobcats or cougars but one of them can jump a bus. Electric fence might not be a sufficient deterrent if true.

Keep your eyes peeled. Our friend in N.H. lost several meat birds to a bobcat that jumped over the electric fence like it wasn't even there. Our predator issue now is bald eagles. We've had foxes, owls, coyotes and mink too. The struggle is real for sure!
Cutting the grass would make a huge difference, I keep the long grass down and trim the bottoms of the trees. 🌴🌾 the electric line is awesome ;)

Spotted a bobcat next to my driveway/house once. Same month my barn cat, Tiger, showed up with a huge gash down the center of her back. Still have Tiger.
we're all looking forward to a doggy joining the farm, it seems almost inevitable at this point. Would you be getting a puppy so they can grow up with the birds and if so is that a reason to wait, maybe for winter to pass?
Remember that bob cats can jump easily 6ft to 9ft (dependant on size) to clearance obstacle so your best option is to clear some of the brush to see them coming and erect a secondary perimeter fence as precaution, by the looks of it this one has decided to make home in your patch because of the fresh game, so he will be back
Morgan, Best thing to do is to cut down all the high vegetation around the yard. It provides the cover for the predators to get close. Get someone to bush hog the entire barn yard. The electric fencing will not be much help in deep snow, unless you shovel it away from the fencing. I had to snow blow a path on both sides of my fencing up in AK. it was a daily chore all winter.

2 Pyrenees and 3 terriers. All outside only dogs. Terriers are on the job 29 hrs a day, and the Pyrenees are the muscle.

Yeah that wire fence you put up is very simple. I recommend you put some tensioners on the fence, too. That way if it gets looser than it should be, you can tighten it up. And the electricity the new fence line puts out is pretty nerve wracking. I have those wires on my own property and I’ve grown up with them.

Did you know that ducks and geese can sleep with one eye open? I never knew that until Matt at 50 Ducks in a Hot Tub told us. I like watching the ducks and geese on the lake down the road from us. My spouse thinks I'm weird. Oh well, I think he's weird for watching TV all the time. Guess we're even.

We have a bobcat we see once in a while. I call the wildlife guy and they appreciate knowing where they are. Other people call too and he's able to predict where the bobcat is going and when he'll get there.
How about a low wire to keep the critters from even trying the fence?

Yeah, British here (are you British too) and for me the only predators really here are foxes. I don't think bobcats would dig under the fence, but it's probably best to put something there to deter ones that do. I think getting a guard dog (as a puppy) in spring could help too?
Last winter Morgan had mink and skunks attacking the ducks. I suspect they would go under the fence.

A dog may work, the geese themselves are normally quite good guard animals too but he does already know these things I believe. Just hope no more animals die even though I understand why a preditor would attack farm birds especially in the winter.

Pests , like Bobcats also kill moles and voles that can damage your fields and pastures , and they also kill mice and rats that get into your feed. Rats can also kill your chickens and ducks and especially the young ones.
Are you really sure that you want to kill the Bobcat ? So that you can become the mole and rodent hunter ?

That's why you have normal cats, dogs can deter those other pests too, I'm not entirely sure but once the bobcat knows it can get easy food, it'll probably keep coming back, that's when it becomes a problem. So if he doesn't get a dog, only choice is to get rid of it.

That’s why you need a tractor and mower to keep the property cleared . It will also help keep you land in good shape and now require clearing later
A trick I use to test electric fences is to touch the wires with a long strand of grass: you will feel a little shock in your fingers but it's much much weaker than touching the wire itself, and you don't have to carry around the tester
Fence, moat and then another fence. Double fenced with moat which (usually) stops them from burrowing under it since they wont into a moat and they usually won't jump two fences. Cut all the grass around the fence so they don't have a hiding spot.
I feel your pain. Predator pressure was one of the primary reasons after 5 years of being a chicken farmer that I left the business altogether. The problem is, as one Midwestern farmer I knew put it , is that we no longer have trappers to keep control of these animals . Also if you want to keep your Ducks laying throughout the winter try putting some light on in the duck house. They need at least 16 hours of light a day to keep laying eggs . Good luck.

Apparently the "if you build it, they will come" quote is legit for most things. Build a farm and the predators will come. I wonder if solar motion lights out there might help any.
Wonder if thats what got your other duck in broad daylight 🤔 , that's to freaking close for comfort...I'd agree with getting some type of guardian dog ( maybe two ) ...try adding a few smaller wood slats on the duck ramp to help them with getting up and down , ducks are not very graceful and need all the help they can get 😂😉

If you have any questions about electric fencing let me know. Also that bobcat isn't likely to climb the fence so much as jump it entirely. For coyotes and other predators I've found that leaving a radio on near the animals tuned to VPR or other channel with more talking than music helps keep them from coming too close. ~David E.
I would still recommend a Great Pyrenees. They're big, gentle giants but fiercely protective of herds and humans.

Bobcats are great to have around! They really take care of the rodents. But you do have to make sure the fowl are in protected enclosures. We have a resident bobcat that likes to spray the mailbox post each morning on his morning rounds. The bobcat is definitely interested in the birds. But you're far too big to be a consideration for stalking. You'll notice he gave you plenty of space and moved away promptly.
Sorry to hear about your predator problem but that's the way it goes when you raise birds. We had a fox around here and did not want to hurt it. So, we got a Parmak Super Energizer 5. Only about 180 bucks and it really lights up the perimeter fence. Probably spent as much on insulators as the charger. Right now it is pushing 1/2 a mile of poly wire and holding 12.5 - 13 K volts. Probably drop down when we add the rest of the fencing. I still use the electric net and solar charger to protect areas I want them to sleep in but with the perimeter lit up we have not seen that fox in months.

It makes me sad Morgan, that you have to be on alert for predators and you@ can’t just sit back and have Toby sit by you as son goes down and relax and enjoy your farm and watch the ducks on the pond and the geese go in and out of the water …But no instead you got to be stressed about this bobcat or other predators getting on your farm and I know that’s a part of life but it’s just so annoying.
I’m really impressed that you know how to do all that electrical dancing around your property and around your animals so easily and quickly. It would’ve been nice if my dad could’ve done that on his farm…. Of course technology wasn’t the same back then either. Tonight, just at sunset I went for a walk with a friend who is also fighting cancer and after walking a while we went and sit at the gazebo where we live… Here in Iowa,It is a nice complex for 55 & Over , Who are independently leaving and no longer want to live in a home in the yard and do all that work; anyway it’s a beautiful place there’s an inch is a new high love it here! But when we sit down at the gazebo I got out my cell phone and I was showing him videos of Gold Shaw Fa rms…. He said this is just so beautiful especially the pond in the land and loved all of the animals as I do. He also lived on a farm growing up and one of his sisters also has the farm that his parents are just like one of my sisters has my parents farm. The more I watch your videos the more in love I fall in love With your place. You will should be so proud of what you’ve accomplished.
I’m a little confused about something and maybe it’s because I’m not as computer savvy as you are but when I want to look back on your videos I don’t understand why I can’t find them in numerical order. When I was trying to show my friend a response to say you building the new ramp for the Geese/ducks, you were done in one day because you added something down at the bottom and I wanted to show him that… I And I love your video say one week ago one months ago two months ago and I know you put out a video every week. The bobcat can jump over 6 feet. So the fences are not that big of a deterrence, especially the one for the geese (even coyotes can jump over the one).

Btw although possible deterrent that electric fence probably won't do much Bob cats can jump pretty high same with coyotes (we didn't believe it either but one hopped my neighbor's fence and got their chickens.)
