Karate for self defence. Karate in a real self defence situation rarely looks like Karate, applying the fundamental principles we learn through our kihon, kata and kumite (distancing, timing, power generation etc) hopefully gives us a better chance of making it out of an altercation unharmed. #Karate #shotokan #Selfdefence #martialarts
I've done Shotokan, Muay Thai and BJJ. My favorite is a Muay Thai Shotokan mix. The Thai leg kicks and various sweeps are solid but the Shotokan agility and stance work makes it easier to get around
something iv learned in my martial arts journey is that over the years most martial arts have evolved into only fighting styles for consensual violence instead of self defense. the word martial historically and universally was used referring to fighting in war or life or death situations so traditionally learning a martial art ment you were learning to kill or maim people to avoid being killed.
Love ur vids u make things so clear while still looking quick an powerful ur a good face for karate u make karate look the way it should like a great martial art I would definitely learn from u it seems like u might even be able to fight mma w everything u display an how I change some things up
Judging from his moves he's either been involved in street fights or his sensei has/was (you don't have time for fancy moves in a street fight like twisting arms & throws bcse your focus should be on getting away quickly before the number of opponents grows too much to handle...)
For emergency those are very good moves. But in my country (Italy) if I injure my aggressor I risk to be denounced (it's ridiculous) but i need a more technical knife hand or takedown apporach..
First technique you learn in shorinji kempo, kinteki geri which means kick in the groin like n.3 in the vid 😅 Anyway maegeri was supposed to be like this from the start i Guess in okinawan style. They keep their legs low
I have to ask why are you kicking in the groin/front kick and NOT curling your toes to kick with the ball of your foot rather than the top of youre foot? You DO know you're going to break your foot doing that right?
The only thing I disagree with is keeping kicks low, if you have proper technique of how to throw a head kick It is very likely in a street fight that you could pull it off since no joe schmoe is gonna know how to defend that, its almost the same as joint locks like an arm bar, when you are on the street you have two options, let him go or break his arm he wont tap it not a cage fight there are no rules. So head kicks can absolutely work.
That’s what I’m saying!!! The only thing is you HAVE to have training, know when and be prepared, if they go to grapple you you have to be able to grapple enough that you can win. And have to be ready but if times you can nock someone out,
What? Are you referring to "keep kicks low?" That doesn't mean what you have understood that as. It doesn't mean you have to kick, it means lower kicks are better than high kicks.
@jkgardiner when your opponent can read your tactic, always use low kick , then he will learn to anticipate it. But if one is rich in skills and unpredictable, your chance to win is greater
He wouldn't get that close to me, never mind be able to grab my collar having trained with Sensie's Billy Chrystal, Jeff Young and Steve Cattle in both Kirkby, and Kirkdale SKC's; way back in the day and taught to to hit the throat everytime..
Who grabs you on the shirt like that in a street fight? Basically nobody karate is garbage. 110 years ago. It was useful. Things have changed. People have evolved now. It's useless if you are out there and you still study karate wow. All I can say is wow
You didn't understand the video. You haven't seen many fights if you think people grabbing you doesn't happen. Have you considered that it might not be a " street fight " but a self defence situation... how many women are grabbed my men in an attempt to control them? Open your mind a bit before looking stupid again.
@@jkgardiner okay buddy and you're right I didn't watch the video because when I see videos talking about self-defense and it's showing them grabbing the front of your shirt I immediately stop watching and I've been in many fights. I've fought in Bangladesh for half of my life cage fighting. Have a good day
Thank god you're not out here showing a 10 step how to when someone grabs you. This is the correct answer.

BULLSHIDO! Karate will put off your timing and make you get your ass kicked badly!
@@derekhiebert1654 what do you disagree with in this video then?

Yess!! For god's sake! Keep the kicks low, unless you hate your life.
You go high then get a fucking nuke blasted at your back🤣
Muitos anos não via um sensei aplicar os golpes do karatê como defesa pessoal, simples e funcional essa é a essência.
I like how even with the complexity of martial arts, the best self defense technique is still "just punch the motherfucker"
Simple is best

Keep the kicks low, to lower the risk of giving away your legs. Lower kicks are also mostly unexpected
plus the balls, knee caps, shins are down there
Thakjs❤
This channel is excellent. You give a very martial delivery of what shotokan is trully. Good job dude.
Remember people... In street fights there are no rules..... Just don't kill that person
Very efficient & effective tips. Maybe you can give some video tips for several situations. Like rear choked, against knife & machete, etc
Very nice and efficient 👍

as an old guy getting ready to start karate, I appreciate this. no way in hell I'm going to ever be the type to throw head kicks or do fancy throws
Excellent and realist.
Wow Nice , thanks 4 sharing.

One of your kicks looks similar to the oblique kick (chassé italien). Great video.

"Keep kicks low"
Me, a Taekwondo guy: 🙄😬
I love a high kick as much as anyone.
Ty my grandma stands no chance
I don't agree about third tip. Gigh kicks can be use for self defence
Low kicks in self defense, that's simple and effective. No Hollywood. Justo finish quick.
During the fight can u just quickly do easy hook kick or nah?. Is it just not recommended?
Yea you can do anything that works, just some things are riskier (for you if you miss or lose balance)

No such thing as "keep" in martial art you need to adapt with the conditions, like you would not be able to use kick on muddy terrain
