LOVE this! Can I just say how I appreciate you giving credit to the original artist? So refreshing! I often see a video and there is no mention of who created the technique or where it was learned, as if the presenter invented it out of thin air.
Oh yes I would feel awful if I didn’t credit the artist I got the idea from. I hope people would do the same for me in that situation too. We have to support each other!
That is brilliant! I just went to bed, but immediately want to hop up again and go try it! I'm thinking 🤔 might work to do the rubbing with a stiffer paintbrush ... but it looks so cool!!! Thank you for sharing!!
Update! I tried this technique with the paper towel. It took me an hour to find the pretty towel I knew I had somewhere in my art hoard. Took another hour to sew and rub the paper away. It turned out beautifully. Now I have 6 more paper towels soaked with coffee drying to make more. Love this idea. Thanks so much.
This is lovely! Thanks for the book suggestion as well. It’s great seeing you bring the idea alive from the pages of a book, makes it feel doable. Thank you.
Golly, that is very cool! I love how you promoted that book. It is a nice thing to do; to give credit where credit is due. I’m going to try that technique tomorrow! I promise myself. 💕
Love this project! Thank you for sharing. My husband and I also make tie dyes. If you have powdered dyes you can wet the paper and sprinkle the powder on it and the colors will split.
Rose, every one of these pieces that you dyed were lovely! And once sewn and "picked" apart, they were so intriguing! Thanks for the wonderful tutorial!
I am so pleased that your video appeared in my feed. I recall years ago taking a class where the background was soluable and you layered various yarns/ribbons and then sewed a pattern or grid with your machine. When the background dissolved it was gorgeous and great for stunning scarfs, etc. I am looking forward to using this in my mixed media. Thank you for this lovely idea.
Oh I think I know what you mean- you can get water soluble fabric to stitch on to and then you can wash it away. Really beautiful technique. I must try it! Glad you enjoyed the video 😊
Really enjoyed this video, thank you. It reminded of using same technique I discovered through my own experimental play years and years ago. The technique wasn't new then and it's not new now but I loved the moment I 'discovered it' just through exploration. It's great when textile artists like Shelly, and yourself of course, share techniques like this so we can all be reminded of them or even better, discover them for the first time. I have Shelly's book... loads of brilliant ideas in there and reminders of some I need to revisit. I feel a grid coming on... it's been a while..
You're right, it's so fun to 'discover' new techniques. Shelly's book is amazing isn't it, so rich with ideas. Every time I pick it up I find something new! Thanks for watching :)
Reminds me of an abandoned industrial building or perhaps a green house. Very cool. I’m wondering about sewing another type of design. Swirling pattern over a straight line pattern. Hmm… 😊
Hi Rose, I just discovered your channel through someone who tried this technique, and I'm glad I came here. I bought the book you showed, and I absolutely love it. Thanks for your referral.
Hi Rose, I really loved this technique & can't wait to try it out. I always keep my used kitchen towels when I doing any dying with sprays or Brusho's. Look forward to more of your content, I have subscribed💜
I just posted a video on this & someone shared your video w me! ❤️ I had a crafty friend send me some of this stuff she called “paper lace”. I tried making some & love this stuff! Such a great technique & adds fabulous texture to projects
Just came across your video. This looks like a fun project and I’m thinking about the possibilities! Can’t wait to try it . I’m a subscriber now! The book looks very interesting, also. Thank you!
Hi Rose! Your video turned up on my TH-cam feed today. Your paper lace/mesh is absolutely beautiful! I love both of them ❤😍 I especially love the first one, amazing how such a simple technique can create amazing art! Thank you so much for posting your tutorial 😊 I have tried this method once already and I intend to try it again. You have a new subscriber 🙂
Love this idea! Definitely going to try it, and loved the look of the book. Had to buy it and it arrived today! Looking forward to reading it. Some cool ideas in there.
That uses a process akin to Momigami by which the crumpling can both be used as a strengthener and softener for more robust papers and to degrade as in this case. Features also in The Found Object in Textile Art. Shelley's authenticity of the technique shines through as oart of the process specific to her approaches in creating work.
I love Momigami too- I also discovered it thanks to Shelley. She's such a fantastic and generous teacher. Lovely to see a comment from you Cas, I love your work!
@@RoseWildsmith I equally love Shelley's work. and the process so fits in with here concept and ideas. There is a also a three page description of these processes in my first book The Found Object in Textile Art 2010. Momigami is a process a discovered whilst studying papermaking and textiles in Japan in the early eighties. It means 'kneaded paper' and used as a textile cloth called Kamiko. Hope you do not mind me mentioning for a bit of history and context.
New subbie. Love your dyed papers, the music sheets are gorgeous. I found the concept of the stitched grid and then purging some of the bits fascinating with a great finished bit to use. Thanks for sharing. Patti
I was really pleasantly surprised by the dyed papers. I’ll make a proper video about that at some point. Thanks for your lovely comment and for subscribing 🤗
Absolutely! It might be a bit more delicate afterwards but if you sew a backstitch or make sure the stitches aren’t too big it should work okay. If you try it please let me know if it works!
I was actually wondering about that as well. My sewing machine has gone the way of the dinosaurs and I've been doing everything by hand instead of just buying a new one. I worry that it wouldn't be strong enough even with a fine backstitch...im curious if anyone has tried it yet?
What do you mean by "kitchen paper", is that paper towels? Yours look stronger than that? I am in the USA :) I just ordered that book also thank YOU!!!
Yes!! Paper towels that come on a roll that you use in the kitchen. They aren’t super durable but once you sew them they are surprisingly strong! Enjoy the book- it’s fab 😃 x
Fabulous video - Thank you. I must get that book too. I had a thought though, could you sew onto paper towel first and then die it, the cotton would match everytime whatever colours die the paper.? I ask because I don't have lots of various threads 🙂
I haven’t tried that myself but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work! Just make sure you use cotton thread as polyester thread won’t take the dye. The cotton thread might dye at a different rate to the paper too, so you might end up with slightly different colours anyway, but I think that having contrasting colours would be an alternative and cool look!
Glorious, just glorious. Love the combination of paper work, dyeing and sewing!! I’m wondering if kitchen paper is what we call paper towel here in Canada?
Ahhhh thanks so much for the tip! I will try it next time. I wore gloves most of the day but by the end I had taken them off because they were getting in my way. I don’t mind too much other than people thinking I have dirty hands!
New subscriber here…I love this technique…thanks for showing us how to do it…love it. I wonder is using a small flat headed paint brush (an old glue brush, something a bit stiff) to rub the paper squares between the threads would work. I’ll try it and let you know. Can’t wait to see what you create with your pieces you’ve made on this video.x
Do you mean after it dried? I think the colour looks darker while it’s wet. It could also be my lighting. I’m still a newbie with this whole filming for TH-cam thing 🙈 But one other possibility is that the procion dyes weren’t completely fixed to the paper so when I rewet the paper some of it moved around. Usually when you dye fabric with procion dyes you fix it by presoaking the fabric in soda ash. It helps the dye make a chemical bond with the fabric. I didn’t notice any dyes running though so I don’t think it was that. Probably just a combination of my lighting and the paper drying.
Yes you can use normal paper or fabric, but it won’t be as easy to rub away the bits in between the stitches. I guess you could cut it away but you wouldn’t get such a natural look. Or you can use devoré paste- but I haven’t tried that myself.
Mine are from the Good Roll company, but they’re not especially stronger than any other brand. It’s surprising just how strong kitchen paper actually is!
This is exactly what I was looking for. Something that would give me the look of netting. Thank you for sharing!! Did you use paper towel as well as paper napkins? Have a beautiful day!! 🌻

Oh, when I think of all the beautiful paper towel scraps I've thrown away!
Hahah I know right!! 😆
That is brilliant! I just went to bed, but immediately want to hop up again and go try it! I'm thinking 🤔 might work to do the rubbing with a stiffer paintbrush ... but it looks so cool!!! Thank you for sharing!!
Great idea to use a stiff paintbrush. Let me know how you get on!

It turned out beautifully. Now I have 6 more paper towels soaked with coffee drying to make more. Love this idea. Thanks so much.
It is quite a commitment isn’t it! But I think the results are worth it. Glad you tried it and enjoyed it!
I love this! It blurs the lines between paper and fabric.
Yes! I love that cross over between the two 🥰
This is lovely! Thanks for the book suggestion as well. It’s great seeing you bring the idea alive from the pages of a book, makes it feel doable. Thank you.

My husband and I also make tie dyes. If you have powdered dyes you can wet the paper and sprinkle the powder on it and the colors will split.
Oooh I’m going to have to try that! Thanks for the tip 😀
That was a really interesting technique and the result so beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing 😊
Glad you liked it!
Very interesting! I must admit to having the urge to rub the “net” together when it was dry to see if anymore would come off? Tfs, Laura ❤
Oooh I’m going to have to try that! I shall report back 😄
Yes please! Have a great weekend!
Rose, every one of these pieces that you dyed were lovely! And once sewn and "picked" apart, they were so intriguing! Thanks for the wonderful tutorial!

Oooo. Texture heaven! Thanks for sharing!
THAT WAS AMAZING AND INSPIRING. ID LOVE TO TRY THIS ON PAINTINGS, USING ACTYLIC SPRAY PANTS OVER THE COMPLETED WORK ON TO A CANVAS!
Oh yes that’s a fantastic idea! It would be great as a kind of stencil! 😃
Gorgeous results!
Thank you! 😊
So interesting. I have loads of gelli printed paper that might be perfect to experiment with. Thanks for sharing.

Great ❤thanks ❤
You're welcome 😊
Glorious, just glorious. Love the combination of paper work, dyeing and sewing!! I’m wondering if kitchen paper is what we call paper towel here in Canada?
Yes, I also call it paper towel sometimes- the absorbent paper you get on a roll for mopping up spills in the kitchen!
How would you use this when making a junk journal? I love the technique and just want to try it. I like the look!
I should make a video about ideas for using it. Collage and adding texture really 😀
That's a good idea! I'll be looking forward to it.
i've done lots of fabric dyeing and one of the best ways to clean your nails is by cutting a lemon in half and digging your nails into the lemon...
Ahhhh thanks so much for the tip! I will try it next time. I wore gloves most of the day but by the end I had taken them off because they were getting in my way. I don’t mind too much other than people thinking I have dirty hands!

That’s a good idea- I was wondering whether a stiff stencil brush might work. Let me know if you try it!
i LOVE this! Can't wait to try it out.😍
Very unusual. I like it! Am interested as to what you might come up with using this in your art.
I am interested too!! Will report back 😀
Can you tell me why the color faded so much? Thanx. Love this technique though!

so the square you used was kitchen paper which you dyed? can it be done with normal paper or with fabric?
Yes you can use normal paper or fabric, but it won’t be as easy to rub away the bits in between the stitches. I guess you could cut it away but you wouldn’t get such a natural look. Or you can use devoré paste- but I haven’t tried that myself.
Fantastic technique thank you so much for sharing. May I ask what brand of paper towel you’re using just in case mine aren’t strong enough?
Mine are from the Good Roll company, but they’re not especially stronger than any other brand. It’s surprising just how strong kitchen paper actually is!
I wonder if wallpaper would be successful?
You could try it! It’s probably a bit thick though… but let me know if you try it!
This is exactly what I was looking for. Something that would give me the look of netting. Thank you for sharing!! Did you use paper towel as well as paper napkins? Have a beautiful day!! 🌻
Yes, only paper towel actually, but I want to try using paper napkins next
This is fab 😍, good for you for giving credit to the original artist. 👏
Of course! It would feel icky if I didn’t
