Artist New Year Reflections: review of 2024 and goals for 2025
In this video I talk about the things that happened in 2024 and the goals I have for 2025.
For 2024, I show you some of my sketches from last year where I started doing more representational drawing and painting. I also discuss my approach to intuitive collage and show you some from my sketchbook. I discuss my ADHD diagnosis and how it has changed things for me. I also mention my gallery show at MINA gallery, and the Sketchbook Social group in Amsterdam.
For my goals, I talk about how I plan to combine my representational sketches with my intuitive collage practice. I also talk about my plan to be more focused and use the materials I already have this year, and my aim to do more journaling. I also talk about my intentions for how I want to communicate online this year: from the heart ❤️
Lastly, I show you my vision boards for this year, both business and personal.

    I didn't get a diagnosis of ADHD until three years ago, I'm now 50. I wish I had known sooner! I can relate to all of the feelings you expressed about it. I look forward to seeing how you combine your representational sketches with intuitive collage, this sounds so fascinating! Last year my goal was to fill all the many sketchbooks I had collected over the years... and now I am running out of space, which is ironic because this year I'm doing a no-spend/use-what-I-have 2025. All the best with your goals for this year! ☺💫

      Hi Mandy, congratulations on getting your ADHD diagnosis! It’s amazing how many women I know who this is happening to now. It’s such a shame we have all struggled for so long without understanding why. But at least the balance is being redressed now 🤞 I’m so interested to hear about your sketchbook situation! Sounds like you’re a year ahead of me 😅 I actually think it’s a great opportunity if you are doing a no-buy year and need sketchbook space, to make your own. I’m planning to do this when I have finished my sketchbooks- I love these patchwork page journals that I made a video about: th-cam.com/video/JIGoDQRaXVY/w-d-xo.html Thanks for commenting, best wishes to you for 2025 as well ☺️⭐️🌟

      Have fun! It’s nice to see the unexpected results from dying your own papers. I usually leave my papers and fabric overnight in the dye, or at least for a few hours. It depends how impatient I am to see the results 😆

    Hello Rose 🌹 you are so creative and an amazing artist! I crocheted for more than forty years (learned how to crochet when I 8 years of age). I agree it is a very relaxing activity. Sadly I tore my rotator cuff so find it difficult to crochet or knit for very long. So I tried stitch meditations (slow stitching) and loved it. Very therapeutic and gentle. Yes! Absolutely! This is all so true, Rose. I have all these fears too. I have a huge collection of "collage fodder", and so much of it is "too precious" to use in collages!! It is ridiculous! I will probably never get around to using it all....

    • @RoseWildsmith
      @RoseWildsmith 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ahhh another fear I hadn’t thought of! I also hoard collage fodder and worry about using it up on the wrong piece because it’s the only one. Better to use it than leave it to rot in the cupboard though! If you have very precious pieces you could take a photo of them or colour copy them perhaps?

      I love love love your glasses Rose! Very cheerful and colourful 😊 Re: fears or fearlessness. I'm quite fearless about experimenting with different media and techniques in my sketchbooks and with painting...however it is moving on from that stage and how to utilise these experimental pieces into my artwork where I get stuck if that makes sense Rose? For example my latest obsession is creating momigami and joomchi fabric/papers and knowing what to do with them once they are made...like where do I go from here? The fear of wasting all of these pieces has caused my latest creative block

    • @RoseWildsmith
      @RoseWildsmith 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ahhh thank you for the glasses compliment! I can totally relate to the feeling of not wanting to waste your beautiful hand made papers! I have a collection of those too. I would remind yourself that you know how to make more, and that if you don’t use them in your projects, they will just sit in a cupboard. I also really like the approach of Shelley Rhodes, who will often cut up and reuse old artworks that she doesn’t like to make new ones. She often patchworks together bits and pieces of old work and comes up with something totally new. So that’s another way to look at it- if you make a piece that incorporates the handmade papers and don’t like it, that doesn’t need to be the final destination for that piece. You could cut up little bits and stick them to the front of greetings cards! Anyway I hope that helps and trust me you are not alone! I struggle with all the same stuff and made this video for myself as much as anyone else 😆 xxx

    Really enjoyed this video, thank you. It reminded of using same technique I discovered through my own experimental play years and years ago. The technique wasn't new then and it's not new now but I loved the moment I 'discovered it' just through exploration. It's great when textile artists like Shelly, and yourself of course, share techniques like this so we can all be reminded of them or even better, discover them for the first time. I have Shelly's book... loads of brilliant ideas in there and reminders of some I need to revisit. I feel a grid coming on... it's been a while..

    I love this, Rose! It's really interesting to see the development of your process and how you've been working and thinking about that.... I'd love to read that book about fear and art!

    Thank you Rose, I really enjoyed this video! I love all your colourful new pages! That's Arctic sketchbook is really lovely! And I do also have a fear of using my paints, isn't that crazy? You inspire me to do so much! Love all your birds too, I want to paint birds now 😅

    here in brazil the Hahnemuhle's D&S sketchbook is really expensive... since art supplies here are so expensive we're actually used to a lot worse quality sketchbooks (and other art supplies in general), like the Canson's ArtBook One 100g wich is the most common for people to buy, so really any of the hahnemuhle's sketchbooks are very high quality for us! great video, thanks for the review :D

      Oh yes I bet! It’s probably because it has to travel so far to get to you 😅 I actually think Hahnemuelle are really exceptional quality sketchbooks.

      Canson Universal sketchbook is the best you can get and it's not expensive. It's better than the Artbook one, the Canson Artbook 180 has exactly the same paper as the Universal but the magnetic strap gets in the way! Get the Canson Universal it's the best sketchbook out there!! I own all the Hahnemuhle sketchbooks and even though the quality is very high, I still use Canson way more.

    Thanks Rose! What a great idea. I love the way your junk journals look. I'm interested in making a concertina version... any tips about how to work the folds and the covers?

      Maybe I should make a follow up video about the concertina version!
