I doubt the inclusion of the D50. I have one, it looks killer, but it also is MINT. As mint as every D50 I see in collections. Why did this synth did not get stage use? DX7's and M1's most of the time have proper Patina. D50's seemed to had use for licking or adoration only.

If you enjoy it and it still surprises you even 30 years after its release, you can imagine the impact of being heard in its time. The songs that have been composed with their sounds are innumerable. Even today, from time to time, you can listen to a new song, which carries one of its programs. 1991 a local music store had a rental special for a month, so I got one and played with it in my dorm room. After messing around with a JX-8P and DX21, it was in a whole different league. I still have a serious soft spot for the generation of synths 1986-1994 or so. So much of the music made when I was in high school and college originated in the hearts of those beasts.

First time I heard the M1 in 1988 at a music store in Central London. I couldn't believe how good it sounded. The piano remains the ultimate house piano. And the pads and how easy it is to put a track together. Make it a great synth workstation to learn composition on.

Back in the days when the M1 was getting dated, I bought an upgrade that added a rom with new sounds and patches. It greatly improved the M1. The company that made it expected you to send in the keyboard so they could install it. I told them I was an electrical engineer and could install it so they made me sign a waiver and they sent it to me with instructions on how to install the ROM. It added completely new sounds and patches. I was going to get rid of it until the upgrade.

Hey Doc! Love all your videos. This one in particular got me engaged the minute I heard the fretless bass tone from the m1. I used to use the Kord M1R (rack-mounted version) with my Roland Ax-1, and I still have it. I know everything about it. I suggest you change the battery first (standard 3volt battery used for CMOS) Then download the Factory Preload sysex file and midi dump via your daw. (i did mine with Cubase and sonar back in the day). I'm assuming your interface has standard midi ports. you will need both midis in and out.
BTW- that last bit has happened due to a corrupt overwrite- will go when you reset.
Love your work, I am a huge fan, and you are a great inspiration to us board players.

Brings back a lot of memories for me. It was the first synth I ever bought NEW back in 1988 when I was 18. The Piano sound was head and shoulders above all the other synths. The Roland D50 was its main rival but was half the power and not as good quality samples. Happy memories with the M1 and many songs composed and recorded with just this one keyboard. Of course I got serious gas when the T series was released lol.

I never had an M1, but somehow I know most of it's presets. I was present whenit was introduced at the Music and Harmony show in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and remember that it had in incredible impact. People couldn't believe what they were hearing back then. I attended the Korg show several times that day just to experience it again.
I used to annoy friends by informing them that I detected another M1 preset in a track, while they were dancing and having chicks on their radar in the nightclub. Oh well.

25:25 To me that sounds like an instrument which just plays through all the available sample memory. From my programming experience I recognize this from the cases where I accidentally messed something up with the sample durations but maybe this was an intentional thing by the creators. Samples based synthesizers of that age would often have different samples spread across the the keyboard range and I think that's what you can hear with those grouped similar sounding instruments cycling through the different pitches.

@@timschulz9563 Positive! It's well documented. Check around reliable sources online like Keyboard Magazine, Electronic Musician, Sound on Sound, etc.
33 years later, the M1 is the best selling synth of all time. Not the DX7. Not the Kronos, not the Triton and not even the MOTIF. The M1 was simply that far revolutionary for the time it came out, and continued to dominate for years to come. But what really made it great was not only the sounds from Korg, but tons of expansion sounds from various companies, hardware accessories, etc. They expanded the M1 to do things it wasn't originally designed for. New M1 products are still coming out to this day. A couple years ago a new sample card for the M1 came out that gives you a modern amount of memory to work with, and you can load wav files right into from you PC via USB to the card. All kinds of products made their way to the M1 like the Frontal Lobe (I had one), Invision Plus 1 internal board (I have two. Single best add-on) and much more. The M1 wasn't just about the synth, it was about the M1 as a platform the way a PC or Mac is a platform. Without all the 3rd party stuff they wouldn't have been nearly as magical. The greatest hardware in the world is nothing special without tons of great supported products for it, unless your an expert programmer which very few are.
