  • In this video I open the best selling 1988 Korg M1* synthesizer to install a new battery. The factory presets are loaded back onto the machine using ROM cards and through MIDI with a computer.
    * The M1 family sold ± 500.000 pieces.
    Introduction 0:06
    Requirements factory restore cards 0:48
    Requirements factory restore MIDI 1:38
    Battery needed 2:11
    Opening the M1 2:26
    Factory reset introduction 5:26
    Loading cards 5:52
    Loading M1EX presets 7:46
    Loading presets over MIDI 8:26
    MIDI Backup 12:48
    The procedure shown here is pretty much the same for all members in the family, and all can load the M1 presets:
    M1, M1R, M1ex, M1Rex, T1,T2,T2ex,T3,T3ex
    Note for PC users:
    For PC often the program MidiOX is advertised as tool for SysEx dumps, but it is pretty complex. I think the C6 SysEx app by Elektron, which is freeware, is closest in operation to the showcased SysEx Librarian.
    Software you need for the procedure
    Korg preset files:
    www.korg.com/us/support/downl...
    SysExLibrarian Mac:
    www.snoize.com/SysExLibrarian/
    C6 SysEx Manager for Windows or Mac

    Gear used:
    Korg M1 EX with 4MB ROM expansion
    Korg MPC-00P, MPC-00S and MPC-0EX ROM cards

    Just want to say thank you. I've recovered my old M1 that I loaned to someone about 20 years ago. It's in a bit of a state but once the physical things are fixed and a new battery installed, I'll now be able to reload the factory settings using the links you provided.

    I just changed the battery of a Korg M1. I followed your instructions and it was a straight forward procedure. After watching you video I decided to load the presets over midi with a 1999 Mac Tower and a Tascam US-122 USB sound card. Everything worked perfectly. However, when the transfer was finished I had to turn off and on the M1 so that the sounds got loaded. Your video was very useful! Thank you!

    My Korg-M1 had a dead internal battery, and I found your TH-cam video for battery replacement. I also could not find the memory cards for the original sounds. Purchased a FORE midi-usb adapter cable and used your instructions for a usb to midi transfer. Fabulous!! My M1 is working as original again!! A very big THANK YOU! Additional note: I had a MPC-12 card and had loaded those sounds into the M1 days before the purchasing the FORE cable. When I finally did the transfer of the original sounds from usb to midi, I tried the SEQ and saw the Oh Yes, so that worked. When I looked at the PROG, I saw Ethereal, still the first song from the MPC-12 card. I turned the M1 off, and back on, and PROG now had Universe as the first song. Also of note, the up/down buttons on the M1 could not change the value of EXCL in midi filtering. I had to use the Value slider.

    Thank you for the video. Very clear and accessible. I'm repairing the Korg M1 myself right now. While waiting for the potentiometer level. Ordered on eBAY. Soon the turn will come to the "filling" of sounds. It was interesting to see how this could be done in different ways. Thanks a lot again.

    Thanks for saving my sanity! Every other tutorial I have read has missed on vital step that you cover-enabling Sysex on the M1( at 6.23 on the video), i.e. getting the display to read EXC:ENA. If this is not enabled, no amount of sending will enable the data to reach the M1. I'm actually using an M1R, but the same proceedure applies.
    Thanks again.

    You don't need to reset it to from factory mode all you need is to find the points where you have the 3V and solder two pieces of wire on a temporary battery solder it in parallel tho the one in place, after you replace the old battery unsolder the parallel one job done, no messing with factory reset.

    • @2kBofFun
      @2kBofFun  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Soldering is easier than a factory reload? Don't think so. I guess most have these hooked up over MIDI to a computer anyway. And if you have the preload card it is even easier.

  • @thereflex2392

    Great video. I really like how you explain things however, the transfer only sort of worked. I’ve tried using different sysex programs, slowing down the throttling speed, and various speed combos as suggested on various forums, with no change. All the sounds are there, but they’re really quiet and are only coming out of one channel, or side of my headphones. Before the battery replacement the sound was perfect, i.e. very loud and coming out of both channels. For reference I’m using the Roland Um-One interface. *Any help would be appreciated*, as I’m the original owner from ‘88 and would love to get her back to normal. Thank you :)

    Thank you 2kB of Fun. Very interesting and useful video!!! 🥇A question: if you load a new M1 card with new sounds, do you lose the original sounds or the original sounds are kept inside and you simply add the new sounds???

    • @2kBofFun
      @2kBofFun  ปีที่แล้ว

      No, the memory stores one set. But you can as well dump the stored sounds to a file on your computer. Use the backup function on the M1, and put the Sysex tool on your computer to record incoming MIDI.

    Could I overwrite all the factory presets & make a custom bank using ones from the various banks out there (& keep some from the factory)?? If so would any ROM Cards need to be involved or would it just be a MIDI transfer??

  • @squishmusic
    @squishmusic 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good stuff. Was looking to use the Snoize app. Q: When you did the 'all data' dump, do you need to use record one or many on Snoize app? Also do you need to set buffer/delay parameters?

    • @squishmusic
      @squishmusic 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh last question. If the synth (ensoniq in my case) has a low battery, can one still edit sounds and send out of MIDI to computer or one needs to save in the synth first (a problem with low battery) - and some synths have batteries soldered to the PCB which is a royal pain in da a** :/
      Many thanks 4 u detailed vid!

    • @2kBofFun
      @2kBofFun  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just try it out, the file should have a size similar to a patch library file. So for the M1, it should be around 16-32 kB. Delay on sending to the synth is necessary when the synth can't cope with the sending tempo. I did not run into this for basic patch transfers, but on the big brother, the T2, a slight delay is recommended when sending huge sample files for the sample memory.
      You can always send MIDI to the synth, because as long as the synth is on, the memory is kept from mains power. It will only loose it on turning off. Oh, and replace soldered batteries with a CR2032 cell holder. Pretty easy procedure.

You could even make one from say an Arduino Leonardo and a Spark Fun MIDI shield, about 30 bucks combined.

    It only worked for me when I used the Edirol UM-2 Midi Interface. Not every Midi Interface Support SysEx Data. The Edirol Interface also works with a bunch of other Retro Synths like the Yamaha DX7 for example. In case that no Interface works with your M1, the last Option I found out is to look for the Korg M1 Editor Software on google. There you can See each Parameter for the Presets and reprogramm them for yourself into your M1. It's a real Pain in the A** but the last thing you can do.

      I tried 3 and all work: Firefly 302 (in the video), Firefly 808 and Edirol FA-101. Guess I rather spend 20-30 bucks on a vintage MIDI interface than on manual entering every setting. I also think with a Mac it is a little easier as MIDI is baked into the OS by default. Another option is using an Arduino Leonardo with a MIDI shield as bridge. That combination offers a very basic USB-MIDI interface on the cheap.

    Hi, there is a "low battery" indication that does not go away even when I changed the battery with a new one.
    I checked the yahoo group of M1 and I found out that others users had the same problem but unfortunately I did not find any solution.
    I thought that maybe some electrolytic caps were dead, just like the common korg O1 "no sound" issue, but I have found no evidence of caps leakage.
    I checked all cables, checked continuity, used deoxit on connectors, checked for cap leakage, changed the battery but the problem persists.
    Has anybody else experienced this issue ? Any thoughts about what to check , would be appreciated.
    Thanx in advance

    I successfully changed the battery, but I had a problem reloading the factory presets. I downloaded the preset files from Korg (using the link you provided) and loaded the data using a Lekato Midi USB interface. The data loaded into my M1, and I turned it off/on. But the sound names are displayed in weird characters and the sounds do not play. Seems like the data is corrupted. Can you please advise?

      Sounds like the battery is no good or the power supply is unstable. Any chance you can measure the power lines coming from the power supply and check if they are steady 5V? Oscilloscope would be best, then you can also see if the voltage is a nice flat line.

      You have to talk with MIDI somewhere. There is no MIDI socket on your laptop, but a flavour of USB. MIDI is a super-simple communication protocol though, it is UART at 31250 baud. That makes it really easy to even make an interface yourself, but also there are plenty of very dumb and cheap USB-MIDI cables with the bridge built in.
      I like to build custom controllers with this: www.sparkfun.com/products/12898 and you can stick it on top of this:
      store.arduino.cc/arduino-leonardo-with-headers
      But that is a geeky solution (super cool though). You can also grab something like this:
      www.roland.com/nl/products/um-one_mk2/

      The MSC cards hold sample data and are pretty large, they contain 512kB of data. That would in no way fit in the patch memory, which is 32kB. So you need the physical cards. There are some companies who create a MSC loader with SD slot, but those usually cost as much as an M1 itself. Keep an eye for someone selling a set. I was lucky to score like 20 M1 cards for 100€ on a classified site. Also found a M1EX board for 50 bucks, which also ads 4MB of samples (8 card equivalent). See my other video on how to install that board. The cheapest way to increase your sample amount is sell the M1, and buy a T3. That machine is way more versaitle and usually cheaper, so you might benefit from the trade!
