as a black German woman who lived through the 80s & 90s in Germany & had almost the exact same experience being cast to lip sync to pre recorded songs just for the optics, I can assure you the movie depicted everything very accurately..INCLUDING the bad hair wigs( Germans had no experience with black hair)..black people were viewed as exotic & exciting & inherently musically talented ( which I wasnt) & I was constantly approached by talent scouts & music producers to perform in music videos & cast girl groups , I was viewed as a status symbol & fetishized & commodified..Frank Farian needs to get more exposed for exploiting this phenomenon ..

Could you explain me why only the member of MV got attacked so much to the point of self deletion when it was the producer's plot first & foremost? The German producer did the fake lip-synching Boney M (which seemingly never got attacked like MV) way before this. He should be the one canceled before anyone.

The original "Girl You Know It's True" is by a Baltimore-based collective called Numarx. The song was an earworm that was ALL OVER the clubs and radio throughout 1987-88 here in B-More, so when Milli Vanilli hit, most of us locals figured either one of two things happened: the Numarx sold it to MV or were ripped off. Glad they got their just due, and they did indeed go on to do BIG things in the industry, including discovering Toni Braxton, one dude becoming the president of Def Jam, and another doing session work with Timbaland. Dudes are hometown legends.

The wardrobe department deserves an award on this film. Spot on. I don’t care how many films are made about their true story, MV will always be Rob & Fab singing to me. I was transported right back to being 15 years old watching this, and I sang and danced along with them. Loved it, wigs and all. Your channel is my favorite ❤️

The actor who plays rob was in the german version of dancing with the stars and came second. Fun fact, I live in switzerland so we watch a lot of german tv. I think that‘s part of the reason he got the part in the film. ❤☺️ He‘s of tunisian and gambian descent.

I remember after the scandal, they reformed as Rob & Fab and performed "Girl You Know Its True" live on The Arsenio Hall Show. I thought they sounded pretty good! Very different from the recording and with a heavy accent but still good!

Fab is a decent singer and goes on tour good for him. But also am I the only one who isn’t that hurt by the lip synching? No shade but I feel the actual singing on the songs is just ok 😂
Idk I never thought the singing on their songs was anything special or outstanding. Is that just me? Compared to, for example, when black box was using Martha Walsh and not giving her credit. Cause could SANG

What I recall (as a teenager) at the time when they broke out in the 1980s, was how my school friends and I thought it odd and revealing that they were big in Germany, and in our circles (perhaps because we were also studying German in school) we linked it to how Blackness seemed to be ‘sexoticised’ (the erotic exotic) in German entertainment (ditto Boney M) for domestic German audiences. In my twenties I began to link it to other such moments, and then when I spent time in Germany (and especially the time spent in München/Munich, where the group originated), experienced (and heard other Black people remark on) how racism in Germany often underpinned the view of Black people as sexual objects which may also explain why they became so famous so fast in a country in which being exoticised was part of their appeal. Many of us ‘joked’ about their oddness right from the start of their careers.

EXACTLY..💥🎉 as a black Germany woman , who grew up in the 80s in Germany I whole heartedly agree, we were fetishized ,commodified, idealized, objectified, stereotyped , type cast & passend around..& Frank Farian exploited that phenomenon to the max & then betrayed & abandoned his " creations" 😒😵

I like documentaries because the good ones at least give us the real picture, which is why I watched Cocaine Cowboys 2 and Godmother of Cocaine before watching Netflix'sGriselda
I feel sometimes they want them to be too sympathetic like in Little Shop of Horros (1986) rehabilitated the crazed (1959) Seymour as a reluctant participant when he was all in.
Just an example. And you've got a new subscriber! Love your commentary!

Ummmm... Just my 3¢... BUT.. I remember working in a restaurant that played satellite music channels over the speakers.
One day a song of theirs was playing on the music channel, ( Mind you this was easily 15-20+ years after the whole scandal). But I went to look at the TV channel because it would give information related to the song playing, like the performers, band name, name of song, name of album, release date etc.
Any way I was totally surprised that in the info it said the artist name was Millie Vanillie and all the info relating to them and not the names of the actual singers of the song or info related to them.
That seemed really odd to me, simply because these two people were dragged over the coals for this, treated so badly!! So much that one of them took his own life!! Yet many years later they were still being credited as the artist and the real artists were not getting any credit or recognition for it.
So ultimately I really have to think, was the backlash and attack that they got really even deserved to the degree that they received?!?!

My friend Monica once told off some snotty woman in a store saying, "Girl I do not want your Man!" This catty woman was the shop keeper's soon to be wife. This is similar to the title of this film. But Monica's saying had an obvious different meaning. Monica and I have always joked that we must make a movie called "Girl I do not want your Man!"

I remember their success and later scandal. They were huge it seemed almost instantly and perhaps the lack of movement toward fame is on purpose? Interestingly enough, I remember feeling so bad for them during their fall from grace. Yeah, I remember sympathizing because fame can cause people to do many things, we see it all the time especially here in the U.S. Also, I didn’t care that they couldn’t sing because there were already a ton of talentless people making it big and I didn’t really see the difference with them.

Nobody got dragged, because everybody knew and nobody cared!
Since the early days of Boney M. it was well known that Bobby Farrell did not sing on the records. Frank Farian was very vocal about him being the actual voice. (Since Farian had a priof career as a singer, it was also not so easy to hide).
They even were open about the fact that only two of the girls could be heard on the recordings.
As long as the hits were coming, the band members also didn´t copmplain. That all came later.
With Millie Vanilli it was the same, you can even hear Farian on some backing vocals. The scandal was only happening in America as there is still the notion of AUTHENTICITY reigning supreme.
It IS a tragedy what happened to those two men, but exploitation and shady industry deals are always a part of the game. It´s not making it OK, but Rob & Fab got the short end of a deal, which looked like a winning ticket. A truly Faustian story...and they got blinded by the promise.

I hope they check in with themselves of why this bothered them that much. Bothered yes, but not that much. Anyway, this is a way you can edit the video without ruining the flow through a cut edit.
