As a life long bulls fan I knew they reached great team status the way the beat the Lakers after loosing the first game of the championship

Why people loved em.... MJ came back, Rodman a off-court sideshow, 72 wins and a ring with the GOAT, kept winning, they played for each other on defense and offense, unselfish, could play any style and were just fun to watch. Their last year everyone loved them even more, because with all the injuries they fought through and won.
Also, I think everyone knew MJ's "final" retirement was coming soon.

Unpopular opinion: A lot of it was lack of coverage. We only knew what the media told us and there was less scrutiny. People didn't even know what MJ was really like till a decade after he retired
The Jordan era is arguably the greatest era in any sport of all time. The NBA's golden years are as great as baseball's golden years. There were TONS of household names and people of all ages loved the game. Marv Albert deserves a lot of credit for that stuff too. The NBA on NBC was FANTASTIC. I miss those days terribly.

@RAGING IN A MANKINI Yep. I feel like the NBA on NBC made tons of players into household names. It also no doubt helped propel Jordan to even greater fame than Nike did. So many of his iconic moments were on NBC. The crazy lay up vs the Lakers. The "shrug" vs the Blazers. Lighting up Barkley in the Finals. "The shot" vs the Jazz. All that was on NBC. Also the post game interviews with Ahmad Rashad were great too!

This is how beloved the Bulls are. In my 30+ years of watching the NBA, they are the only team I've ever seen go into an opposing teams home court and get louder cheers from the opposing teams fans.

Michael Jordan literally was carved from every piece of greatness you could ever want and people knew that. That along with humbleness ( even though he trashed talked with the best of them ) made people wanna watch him and his team every night. But you’re absolutely right, they had the best of everything.
I watched it live AND have re-watched several times. I agree w Colin's first statement, they are most beloved. They are also the greatest. Dominance in an era of no cap and hard fouls. They adapted and overcame. MJ was Superman and Scottie was Batman. Harper, Rodman, Grant, Armstrong, Kukoc, Cartwright, Kerr, Paxon, etc. were blue collar guys. Also, they beat up on the bad guys (Knicks, Pistons, Celtics) after the bad guys ruled for a hot minute. Also, they were fighting against time with ownership always wanting to break them up. Great story.
Jordan simply had that very rare "IT" factor and he was Extremely Exciting and Entertaining to watch play...His game was so Effortless yet so Dominant...His Swag was off the charts...He also had the "Look"...This along with "Perfection" on the Biggest Stage in "6" Finals with "6" Finals MVPs...Even when he missed shots in the Clutch everyone had so much Confidence in him...All of this is why his "Shoes" were and still are the Fabric of the Sneaker Culture...Even old Rich Successful White men dressed in a Suit have his Shoes on their Feet...Jordan represents the Top of the Food chain of Greatness and Perfection...Trying to compare other players to Jordan is always Desperate and Ridiculous...His TOWERING Legacy is Just simply untouchable...Jordan stands all ALONE at the Top of the Mountain...This Upsets some people because no matter what they say or do they cant knock him off the Top of the Mountain...They sure do TRY though including the Media

WTF did he just say "Kardashian". From an international perspective MJ and the Bulls really popped off because they we're the dominant force in the NBA when it was going global. MJ probably tripled the NBA net worth breaking into so many international markets. Jordan to me is the greatest sports icon of my lifetime, watching him was like watching the most gifted athlete do things no one would ever come close to doing again. It was pure grace and ferocity, a glimpse of what a human is capable of when the talents of human anatomy are pushed to its highest limit. Even though the rest of us couldn't even dream about doing such feats the fact another human being can gives us an appreciation for the exceptional.

The bulls were so popular, MJ was so great to watch 1000 different moves, he could just glide and hang in the air effortlessly. Most clutch best scorer and defender. Flare, style, charismatic, and MJ loves competition. Just to think he went 6-0 in NBA Finals and dominated when 7 footers were great players in the league and dominated. The bulls did this with no center their centers use to get dominated by the great 7 footers and somehow MJ pulled it off! Best team ever.

The entertainment factor of Michael Jordan had everyone watching/appreciating from his rookie season on! I was born in Chicago, sports teams were stuck on "wait till next year"! '85 Bears were it before Michael/1 Super Bowl - that's it! Michael changed that forever! Scottie was great, role players did their thing! Phil became a great coach! MJ was the sun & everyone else were planets revolving around him! Never forget that; Michael's the greatest ever for a reason!

I love when Colin combines cultural analysis with sports. One of the reasons the Cavs-Warriors rivalry was SO compelling before KD is that those teams represented the culture of the places they're from. Cleveland- gritty, LeBron just muscling his way in the paint, hometown boy the Akron Hammer, a down and out beleaguered franchise in a down and out city that peaked in the past. I was 9 years old watched Game 1 of the 1997 NBA Finals with my grandma. MJ hit the game winner, I've been a basketball fan since and became a huge MJ fan. Michael Jordan is the reason I became a fan. GOAT.

People are very nostalgic about the 90's including music, tv ,sports .The economy was good, cold war had ended, 9/11 had not taken place.
I played basketball in high school and college and I knew when I started watching MJ that I was watching the guy who was going to end up being the best player of all time. So I watched every time he played because you knew he was going to bring it every game. The Bulls played the game the right way with great defense and a concise, efficient offense and you knew Jordan was going to get over 30 every time. It was a fricking clinic and a pleasure to watch.
I’m 83,000 miles away in Nz and I turn 35 other day and mate sent me a photo from 25 years ago iv got a 23 bulls singlet on at ten , to this day iv followed nba and I listen to Chicago radio on I heart

Colin loves his macrosocial concepts for his arguments and though it may be kind of true, he is forgetting something very important... The biggest generation of children (Millenials) with parents who were the highest generational earners (Baby-Boomers), coming to age watching MJ dominate his sport so thoroughly, then highlighted with the rise of cable television and 24-7 Sports broadcasting. And MJ did so without ever getting involved with the politics of the early-to-mid nineties. By staying in his lane and dominating in a way he had, his legacy overshadows all of basketball so mightily, today's stars may never earn the full respect they deserve. His focus on hardwork, dedication, and perseverance overcame the very polarizing Bad Boy Pistons, ended the Showtime Lakers, and out-dueled the last great Knicks team. Every child I knew when I was growing up wanted to be Michael Jordan, even all of today's stars. Lastly, with MJs 2 retirement, questions arise: had he never retired the first time, could the Bulls have won 8 NBA Championships in a row? Could they have gone longer if MJ had not retired prior to his stint in Washington? His greatness was so mighty, that it was he only kept himself from achieving more, seriously.

By and large (terminology to discuss most, not all), millenials children were raised by baby boomer parents. If you need the verify, please google 'Parents of Millenials'. They were called Baby Boomers because all the soldiers came back from the war and got busy. A generation is based on the principle that your grandfather had a kid, and your father had a kid, and someday you might have a kid. The labeling based on a time period is a bizarre mislabeling in my opinion that distorts the term. All my gen x friends had Boomer parents. If most millenials have Boomer parents that means you're saying two things.. 1. Your definition of generation is soley based on the year you were born. 2. Boomer's were getting busy well into their later years on a grand scale. This is what happens when you try to mass label a group of people.

Not only is this socially accepted, but backed by legit statistics accessible through the CDC. Things have to be considered if you wish to further invalidate or dismiss my initial claim is to define - 1) Where we choose accept the years that define the alpha and omega of each generation 2) Mean age of Motherhood, 3) Mean age of First Time Mothers, and 4) the birthrates per year during accepted Millenial generation period.
I have found the birth years of Millenials start between 1980 to 194, but most agree with 1982. The end year of Millenial fluctuates from 1996 to 2000. For Baby Boomers, it seems most accepted from 1946 to 1964, though there are outliers who dismiss these years. So, what are your thoughts before we proceed on this kind of silly dialogue?

@@Cgep96 , every team had at least 1 superstar, 1 all star or 2 and role players back in those days. Mike and the Bulls went through many growing pains before winning in 91. The Bulls had to struggle just to get to the finals, it wasn't a cakewalk. After Mike returned, many doubted if he was ever going to be the Mike of old. Rodman was older and a walking time bomb. Thankfully for then it all worked out at the end. Athletes play for championships.

@Black people Eater in Korea Curry is by far the most popular active player. The NBA isn't really popular here tho, he's mostly famous because he went on this one famous tv show here. I've never heard anyone even mention Kobe or Shaq. The most popular sports here are baseball and soccer tho.

Being born in Chicago the same year MJ retired from the Wizards, it has been my civic duty to fully support MJ throughout my childhood even though LeBron has been the talk of the sports world for so long. I never got to see him or witness his greatness, but man when people talk about him it sounds just so magical.
Trust me my dude, lebron cant hold Jordan OR Kobe's jockstrap for that matter.
For real though, those bulls were the best when the whole team was lighting it up. Dudes like Armstrong, Hodges and Grant deserve more love.

I am from Costa Rica and most of the 30+ people LOVE the Chicago Bulls. They know whos Scottie Pippen and MJ are. We watched the 70+ season and it created a huge buzz. We are a soccer nation. But we followed them as if the were our own.
The six three point shot game against Portland, kind of caught me off guard, I never noticed him shooting from that range at a regular basis.
In a lot of his best games though he was nailing 3 pointers especially from 1990-91 onward. He was streaky from out there but could light it up sometimes.
Born in 85, grew up on MJ's Bulls. From what I remember, this is accurate. EVERYONE had that Bulls starter jacket. EVERYONE wanted the newest Jordans. The entire country was obsessed with that team. The Warriors had a great run before they got KD, in terms of being likeable. But the Bulls of the 90s really were the perfect storm. Greatest, most charismatic player ever. Perfect wingman. Greatest coach.
I was born in 82 and can still remember my dad getting me my first Bulls hat and a pair of Jordan's. Having a pair of Jordan's back then was one of the ultimate "status symbols" because they were actually super expensive even then. Not only was it the greatest era for basketball but it was also the greatest era for SHOES! There were TONS of great shoes that came out in that era. My actual favorite pair I ever had were the Penny 1's. I also had the Shaq 1's and 2's and I also had a pair of Pippen's as well. The Penny's are still my all time fave though but those Jordan's I got in 92 or 93 still ruled though. Jason Kidd and Shawn Kemp had sweet shoes as well but I never got theirs. My stepmom paid $150 for my first Penny's in the mid 90's and those things STILL go for that on ebay! The Lil Penny commercials were the bomb too! This was easily the greatest NBA era ever.
Growing up on Chitown, the best was the old Chicago Stadium -the nose bleed section would literally shake violently during the games from the energy. The bulls were simply CLUTCH; we never doubted they would win. They had to go through Detroit, Phila, Boston, NY, LA to get to the promised land which made it very sweet, then they stayed at the top. Michael was just perfect, he blew your mind on a regular basis. Seeing Pippen grown into a man among men was one of the coolest parts too. Cartwright, Kerr, Grant, Armstrong, Rodman, Kukoc, so many different personalities working together. You just had to be there, it was electric.
Bulls was the superteam, they never faced a team with more talent than they had. They were always the favorites, not because they had Jordan, but because they had the best players and coach and organization committed to winning. Then, players can just focus on, yes, basketball.
I grew up during this era... junior high and high school.. They had the greatest player, the greatest side kick and the greatest side show as well as the greatest coach.. Once they had MJ, Pip and Rodman they were the Beetles. But the main reason why they were so loved is because they weren't exposed to the 24/7 social media exposure which is full of hate... That's a fact

I am Sri Lankan, 37 years old. Grew up in the 90s when we didn't have cable. This is cricket country and I am a cricket-playing, cricket-loving nutcase, but MJ grabbed the attention of kids in my generation in a way that is hard to explain. Every kid my generation wanted the Bulls cap. I had one. It was stolen. Still bugs me to this day.
Personally, I initially thought he was some make believe super hero, that he didn't really exist in real life. And then, a local TV channel started showing NBA re-runs. That's when we saw MJ for the first time. I swear the first time I saw him do some of those things on the court, the 14 year old me was convinced it was special effects, like you know in the movies. No one else in the court was doing it, not with that flair, not with that creativity, not with that oh-my-god-what-did-I-just-see revelatory euphoria you experience with only a handful of athletes.
No human can actually do those things, right? Wrong. MJ could.
Can't wait for the 10 part documentary.
It was an inspiring life lesson to watch him overcome and beat the Detroit Pistons. He didn’t quit and run off and sign with another team. Jordan simply got tougher, made his teammates better and got it done.
It has everything to do with 1 thing and that’s WINNING.

Watching the Bulls play was like poetry in motion. It's perfect! The intro alone can give you chills. Oh I can't wait to watch "The Last Dance". It will bring back a lot of good memories from skipping school during playoff games to admiring MJ's amazing moves, Rodman's hair color and many more. Bring it on!
Nobody in North Carolina cared about NBA basketball. We had the UNC, Duke & NC.State. UNTIL Michael Jordan came into the league. Then all of NC were Bulls fans. Bc he gave us a reason to watch NBA basketball. All their games were on tv. Every game was an event Bc you didn’t know what you were going to see Jordan do. Usually you saw something you’ve never seen before. Amazing - THE GOAT!

I started watching basketball Lebrons senior year in high school so hes my Jordan but the Jordan Bulls are my favorite all time team, especially the second run with Harper, Kukoc and Rodman. They weren't as stacked as 80s Lakers and Celtics but they were a perfectly constructed team. Also very different from the crowd because it was wing duo, while almost everyone else was point guard and power forward or center. I hope the future can have another team that cool.
With Jordan you don't need a dominant center or point guard but imagine if he got to play with one.

And this was not only a US phenomenon, it was global! MJ transcended sports, people in remote villages across the globe know who he is, people that have no clue about the sports know who MJ is. In the 90's he reached deity status, we were just in awe with him. He had such aura and presence that you simply cannot explain to those who weren't alive then. He is GOAT basketball player but he might even be GOAT sportsman! Very very few people are such legends!

I'm not in the US, I remember waking up early to catch Bulls Games and to watch MJ...I watched each and every game of the 96-98 Finals....what a team, Pippen, Kukoc, Rodman and the GOAT MJ....

He kept TONS of legends from ever getting rings. When I was a kid and they done the 50 Greatest Players a lot of the players on that list were guys that Jordan beat head to head. He is hands down the greatest of all time and it's not even close and never has been and never will be. He was the total package on BOTH sides of the ball.

The Bulls left about 3 championships on the table 2 being from when MJ did the baseball experiment and they would have probably won the 99 Finals to if the GM wouldnt have got a huge ego thinking he could rebuild the greatest team ever assembled in the NBA.

Rigo Fernandez I agree with you. It’s amazing how everyone says, they lost to the Magic. He played 17 regular season games and the training for minor league baseball and the NBA isn’t even close. They are all in good to great shape but being a professional basketball player compared to a minor league baseball player isn’t fair. He wasn’t in shape, sure he dropped the double nickel on the Nicks but like Toby Keith said, he may not be as good as he once was but he was as good once as he ever was. Then they neglect to mention the following season with very similar teams as the year before and what happened to the Magic...
