COVERT Home Surveillance! See better in the DARK using IR LED Strips!

  • I came across some 940nm IR LED strips a while ago and have been trying to figure out how I could incorporate them into a project. I have worked with different types of IR illuminators, but always found them to be large, bulky, expensive, ugly, etc, etc. I thought there has got to be a better way of getting some additional IR illumination into an area. So, I came up with the concept of hiding the IR LED strips in a picture frame.
The concept is simple enough. You have an IR sensitive camera, possibly black and white, located within a room. Maybe the particular camera does not have built in IR capability and you need a way to light up the room, but you'd like to be as unobtrusive about things as possible. Or, maybe you'd just like to boost the low light capability of your Wyze, Blink, Arlo, or other home surveillance camera.
In the video I use off the shelf parts that anyone has access to. Putting everything together was not difficult and can be configured to use more or less LEDs in a larger or smaller frame. This is a prototype, proof of concept version and still needs a bit of refining before it's a finished product.
Some of the things I might do include adding a light sensor to activate the IR lighting only when it is dark. Finding a better option for the picture mat that allows the LEDs to emit through easily. The paper I used was just to get the point across. This could also be battery powered, but I like the reliability and longevity of constant power. I'll hide the power cable better on the next version as well.
If you have any ideas about how to improve this project or you built a version yourself, leave a comment down below. If you like this project and would like to see more then think about subscribing. I have lots more ideas I'll be trying out and uploading to this channel.

I wonder if these ir light strips might be a good idea to hide your face on a camera, if you incorporated it into a baseball hat.

I want to put a mini spy camera on a drone but it looks as if Moore if light will be needed for night vision.
By switching running led lights to some strip if led a good fill light should fill the bill.

Nice job. 👍 You may want to check out Alfred Camera and use a spare smart phone.
