    tried it and works! I can't tell the difference between baking and washing soda visually, but I checked the pH of water with this "transformed soda" and it jumped up to 10! (pH of baking soda = 8, washing = 10). Thank you! :D

      Been in Lagos for four months and the hard water is wreaking havoc on my skin and hair. Can't find sodium carbonate. Sodium bicarbonate only sold in the pharmacy...not the grocery store. Hoping this will help put a stop to my itchy skin!

    Thanks for the reminder. I’m old enough to have actually had a REALLY chemistry set! And one of the experiments in the kit was exactly what you described. Heating Sodium Bicarbonate in a test tube and pouring the CO2 produced over a candle to extinguish the flame.
    I was looking for “washing soda” and came across both your videos, thanks for taking the time to explain the process.

    To make washing soda in the oven I spread a one pound box out evenly over a cookie sheet and bake it at 400 for thirty minutes. I noticed that once the washing soda has cooled from baking, if you put a little in your hand and add a little water to it you will notice a mild exothermic reaction. It's not hot enough to burn you but it does get hot. It reminds me of some of the face masks that used to be on the market that get hot when you add water. The cool thing is that you can use this as a test to make sure that your sodium bicarbonate has indeed been converted to sodium carbonate.

    I know I'm way late to this... You can get bulk sodium carbonate aka soda ash at swimming pool supply houses. It's used to raise the Ph of pool water as well as the myriad other uses. It's also commonly called washing soda and soda crystals (in the UK). I use it to remove rust from tools and machine parts via electrolysis.

    I use washing soda when I make my homemade laundry soap. That washing soda has been hard to find lately, and I don't want to order supplies from Amazon. Washing soda is still around, it's just not at the usual stores anymore. I'll probably use the oven should I ever need to make some washing soda. Thanks a bunch!

      Not everyone lives in a place with a conventional oven/stove combo. If you live in a cabin, dorm, tiny home, off grid etc, you might only have a hotplate or burner tops. Or some people only have wood ovens which take hours to prepare -which is a huge inconvience if you're living off the grid.
      Or in my case, I'm cooking all day and don't have the spare time to use my oven for this.

    That's awesome! My girl insists I getting laundry detergent that costs more and contains 'some unknown amount' of sodium carbonate. Now we have been using baking soda in our wash quite frequently and liberally. I was wondering if we were paying more just for baking soda.
    Well now I know the difference and i certainly will be making my own! It is a very effective addition to plain laundry detergent.
    If you have a worrisome stain- try this. Take baking soda and hydrogen peroxide and make a runny paste mixture and put it on the stain. Scrub it around with a toothbrush and it's absolutely amazing. Often the stain will disappear before your very eyes! I haven't ever tried this with washing soda so I would recommend caution before mixing that with hydrogen peroxide, as it could be reactive in some way. I am going to look into it, although it's hardly necessary.

      Peroxide is also a bleach so you might not want to do that with anything that isn't already white. The PH of washing soda is significantly higher than baking soda so I don't think I would try mixing the two without more of a chemistry background, but that's just me.

    Thanks for this vid.
    I just want to point out that those "vapor geysers" release that fine powder in to the air and can and will get into your breathing holes. Also, it will get all over your counters and anything that is within a 6ft radius of the pot. Baking might be better, but as @Mentorcase said; the cost in heating the pot or oven for an hour might not be worth the effort. This method should only be used if you can't find Washing soda at all or if you need it that minute.

    Thanks for the tip about how baking soda clings to the spoon but when the baking soda is sufficiently cooked, the product will not cling to the spoon. Review: baking soda will cling to a spoon when stirring it, whereas washing soda will NOT cling to the spoon. I tried baking but couldn't tell. I was told it will look grainy, both looked the same to me. At first, the baking soda looked gray, but after a while, I thought it it was my imagination. The spoon is the best way to tell the difference!

    Very interesting. A girlfriend was just telling me about this on FB and I had no idea. Being kind of in the rural area we tend to have washing soda but even just in the last year or so I haven't seen it as often in some of the stores I shop at (but can still see it in some of the other stores that specialize maybe more in the stuff you need for DIY projects.). I notice the Sam's Clubs and probably CostCo and places like that, it's easy to find 10 pound bags of baking soda, which I usually use in the bathtub or to make a simple shampoo for my hair.
    The automatic captioning kinda makes a mess of some of the things you say, so it would be cool if some day you can caption it the way you are actually saying and not some random words that could be offensive... Thanks!!

    So, can you use this transformed soda when using "The Speedy Plate"? The Speedy Plates calls for 4 tbsp of the washing soda per quart of boiling hot water? So after seeing this video, it's basically putting the water back into the washing soda (sodium carbonate) and making it back into regular baking soda? Is that right? The washing soda powder when wet feels like a silky feel to it as if there is a softener added. Has anyone used this conversion with the Speedy Plate to clean their silver??

    This might seem a silly question, but here goes, anyway. So, to turn baking soda to washing soda we heat it to get rid of the C02; we're now all aware of this. HOWEVER, when it gets wet for washing, oxygen and water is added back into the soda, doesn't it? So, what keeps it from turning BACK into regular old baking soda? I guess my *real* question is, does it make a difference that you switch baking soda to washing soda? (FWIW, I've been doing this for quite a while; it's just something I'm always wondering!)

    • @EvaDoubleMama
      @EvaDoubleMama 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      he is adding heat to the process , I guess if you put washing soda into washing machine, it doesn't have enough heat and time to turn back to bicarb, but that is just what I think, no science proof whatsoever!

    • @rnnumi7945
      @rnnumi7945 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi Jen,Here is the chemical equation: 2NaHCO3 + Heat -> Na2CO3 + CO2 +H20Tossing washing soda into water will not reverse the reaction back to regular old baking soda. Why? In order for this to happen, it would require a source of carbon dioxide gas to bubble into the mixture. In theory, if you really want to turn it back into sodium bicarbonate just simply grab a straw and blow bubbles into the dissolved sodium carbonate solution. Finally, washing soda is a better cleaner than baking soda. Hope this helps.

    • @AA-vn2nq
      @AA-vn2nq 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Jennifer W you take out the carbon and it is replaced by oxygen. the PH also increases so it becomes slightly caustic.

      sodium carbonate is a stable molecule. simply adding water isn't going to cause it to react.

      I liked your answer and you seem to know enough to answer this. When I use my home made washing soda for hand washing, not only to I feel it heating up (really odd), but it all clumps up into little hard rocks! Which is also what happened in the little tub of the washing machine, where I found it just sitting there all hardened up. Is this normal or perhaps I did something wrong? Thanks for any input.

      Don't worry, the "gas" (carbon dioxixe) ageing released is in no way flammable or explosive. Carbon dioxide is the same thing we exhale when we breathe. I've done this on my gas stove many times and never once had a worry.
      I'm more worried about cooking or frying anything with oil my my gas stove lol

      Diane Edwards That's my same problem. We live in Oaxaca. I've been all over town asking folks for "sosa" or "soda de lavado" or "carbonato de sodio" (three of the different Spanish names for washing soda), but no one here in Mexico has ever heard of it. They always want to sell me baking soda.

    remember, if you can't get washing soda just look for soda ash (for pools) - same stuff.

      The ideal would be if you asked for "Sodium Carbonate" and had people immediately get the correct idea of what you need, without the need to ask for either "Washing soda" or "Soda ash" depending on the place. I once needed some Kerosene (the C10-C16 hydrocarbon mixture, basically jet fuel) for my bike chain. I went asking for it in a small home improvement store. They had no clue of what it was. I then asked for "Lamp oil" and they immediately gave me what i needed.

      All of those contain Naptha or Zote. I made a bunch and had full blowing asthmatic attack. I think it's citronella in these products.

      LindieLee warning: use mask/gloves when mixing or using as powder residues may and or will cause irritation to lungs and skin as all powders and such may. 😊

      No fear, there’s no label reading citronella ingredients contained, but if you have problems with that certain product, you should know what to do. Good luck. 👍

      I use sodium carbonate for soaking my freshly bought t-shirts prior to tie dyeing them and this video hopefully has fixed my problem. I don’t want to pay shipping on the Company recommended soda ash, as by the pound it gets very expensive, if I can just get this process figured out, I’m going to help a lot of folks. Been searching before attempting off and on 2 months, then results faded. Ordered professional dyes instead of local hobby store, but couldn’t get my PH right for soda ash soak. Found this vid, finally and soda ash was not cooked properly. So we see. It’s now cooking more and higher level heat. Will update. Thank you so much for these instructions and replies. Also going to try the wash soap while I’m at it.
      But not breathe real deep while I’m stirring it lol. Had to.

      Ponga bicarbonato de sodio en una olla en la estufa y caliéntelo hasta que TODO el vapor haya salido del bicarbonato de sodio. debería parecerse más a cristales que a polvo. guárdelo en un frasco hermético

    (3:45)If you have plants around, the plants, in its photosynthesis of sugars, will take in the carbon dioxide and release oxygen as a waste product. In other words as long as you have plants in the room, the plants will convert the carbon dioxide to oxygen and you won't suffocate from too much carbon dioxide.

      Not simple to answer a set time because it depends on a bunch of factors. But when it stops steam boiling, it is probably done.

    baking soda solution will turn to washing soda at 60C. You just need a lot of water to disolve soda

    • @Catfish2011
      @Catfish2011 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Captain Geronimo use warm water and agitate or/in container/mixer to dissolve properly as it tends to want to lump and clump otherwise.

    Is washing soda the same as lye?

    • @Barsabus
      @Barsabus 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think so. Lye is sodium hydroxide. That's the main active ingredient in liquid draino.
