Super glad you made this video. I couldn't find washing soda today. I went to Costco though and bought a HUGE bag of baking soda and am converting a bunch of it. I can't wait to make the laundry soap.
It is a great hack for the harder to find Washing Soda. I was so happy to learn how to convert it. Especially since baking soda is so cheap, it makes sense to convert our own.
what was the p h of the baking soda before you started? what was the p h of the washing soda when you finished? the p h can be gradually increased by the temperature setting; ie- maybe you desire a p h of 8 or 10 - keep notes as the oven temperature climbs. just a suggestion.
I would avoid inhaling any fumes when creating cleaning projects. It can cause irritation to the respiratory tract if breathed in. Just work carefully.
I’m learning so much!!! Thank God for YT and thank you both ❤I’m doing more homemade things I kinda wish I knew this when my now grown daughters were home 😢 but I’m excited to teach my daughters for their kiddos ❤
I always use my largest SS bowl when pouring into jars. Isn't it more caustic at this stage? Thought I saw that someplace. Maybe some warnings should be added?
I have a big bag of baking soda I picked up at Sam’s club. After purchasing, I heard arm & hammer had aluminum or something harmful in it. What kind of baking soda is safe?!
According to Bamboo Earth: "Come to find out, baking soda in fact DOES NOT contain aluminum. All brands are 100% sodium bicarbonate, even Arm & Hammer. So then, why does the label specify "aluminum free"? It seems that this whole confusion started because baking powder contains some sodium bicarbonate, but also can have other ingredients that act as acidifying agents. This means that you don’t have to add extra acid to your recipes to get the leavening action. The acidifying agents can come in the form of cream of tartar or an aluminum-based acid. But, don't worry, not all baking powders include these other ingredients. So what about baking soda? When shopping for baking soda you do not need to be concerned about aluminum. What you may want to know is whether or not the sodium bicarbonate is from a mill chemical process (Arm & Hammer and similar companies) or produced directly from the ground in it's natural state (Bob's Red Mill). Neither will contain aluminum. However, you will get better tasting food and better results from your DIY concoctions with the natural baking soda."

@@Finn959 Washing Soda is perfect to use for cleaning the kitchen and bathroom. I use it all the time. Yes, it can be used on things like silver and metals, however, I generally dissolve it first. Washing Soda has a slightly abrasive quality to it so for any soft metals I would do a scratch test first to see if it would hurt the metal.
Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) can be converted into washing soda (sodium carbonate) through a process called chemical conversion or calcination, which involves heating baking soda in an oven or on a stovetop. This process drives off carbon dioxide (CO2) from baking soda, leaving behind sodium carbonate which is washing soda. If you then add water to the resulting product (washing soda), it will dissolve in the water to form an alkaline solution, but it will not turn back into baking soda. This is because the chemical composition has changed during the conversion process, and you cannot reverse this chemical change by simply adding water. You can convert baking soda into washing soda through heating, but adding water to washing soda will not turn it back into baking soda.
this reminds me of when i discovered that Colloidal oatmeal was nothing more than the quick oats you make for breakfast, run through your blender to a fine powder! colloidal oatmeal is VERY expensive too!! we live in a rude society.......sad.....
How to Make Washing Soda Preheat the oven to 400°F. Sprinkle baking soda onto a cookie sheet. Spread it out to form a thin layer. Bake the baking soda at 400°F (200°C) for 30 minutes to 1 hour. The time isn’t critical. You can’t ‘overcook’ the soda, but you want to be sure to drive off all the water. I like to test it by holding the hot cookie sheet with a hot pad and lightly shaking it to move the soda slightly. I do this one or two times during the baking cycle. Remove the pan from heat, allow the washing soda to cool, and store it in a sealed container to keep it from picking up moisture from the air.
Please note. Washing soda is Not like baking soda it has a high P H level so it is caustic and should not be in contact with bare skin for more than a few seconds be cautious. Always read up on products and even though it's made with baking soda caution with children.
Very cool! Anything I can make instead of having to buy is good! Thank you 🥰 Ps - You should make some large jars with your Wisdom Preserved Logo🤩for just this
Sure glad you didn't make a 1-minute video that said "Start with a little more baking soda than the amount of washing soda you need. Spread it evenly in a baking sheet. Bake for 1 hr at 400degF, redistributing it every 15 minutes. When it has cooled, store it in an appropriate container."
I'm glad you thought our video was a little more comprehensive explaining the differences and what to expect as your baking soda converted. We are glad you found us and took the time to comment. We hope you enjoy our videos.

Thanks for the video. Doesn't the heat cause fumes that are dangerous to inhale?

Great tip thanks!

What is the purpose of taking the water out of the baking soda when water will be added back into when you put it in your wash?
Taking out the water in the oven actually changes the pH. This is the purpose. It chemically changes it with the heat.
@@WisdomPreserved Thanks. I was really wondering that, too.
This is such a awesome video. Thank y’all for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video. I use this in my dishwashing soap also. This should save me bunches.
Thanks again.
Glad it was helpful! This trick has saved me a lot of $$$'s over the years. I know it will do the same for you.
Several layers of news paper works well. 💕

may it be dried out in a large skillet--oven not working
I would think it would be effective. Just keep the setting on low.
