    Thank you for this video! I was running into these issues with my 8960 i9k really getting low performance next to what would be expected. Also it was really helpful to see that the dell advanced air cooler and their liquid cooler perform basically the same even with the i9. Looks like my choice to go air cooler was probably good since at least it's lower maintenance long term, and quieter at idle which is nice. Great video, thanks again!

    I just wanted to thank you for this series of videos. I recently purchased this PC and your information was really helpful in making choices. For example I never would have realized that I could get the tower cooler for just $100 more with the k processor than paying the $50 extra for the liquid cooler with the non-K processor. That extra $50 could equate to a year or more of additional use of this PC in the future. Thank you so much for your hard work. I just want you to know it is appreciated.

    I have an XPS just like this one, save i913000K...I find everything you present here to be exactly as you describe...it is very nice to hear from an professional on this model, specifically Dell...while I usually purchase Dells for my own production/reliability systems...I never really appreciated their proprietary nature, I simply learned to live with it...your video actually makes this seem like a feature...congratulations!...my systems works very well for me...I do have one bug-a-boo, on this one, that bothers me...after replacing stock fans with and adding an addition Corsair Case intake fans (used a Noctura Sata powered fan splitter) ...BIOS can't seem to locate the fans, neither will after-market case fan configuring software...that being said, in operation they are indeed working just fine...plenty of air-flow when they need it...does not make sense to me, however, there it is...any comments you might have on that one would be greatly appreciated...again congratulations on a well made, to the point, tech video...thank-you!...jo'c

      I ran into this issue with two different Noctua CPU coolers, I don’t think there is a setting in a bios to disable the fan warning.
      When I had the message about the “fan issue” at boot it offered me to run the Dell diagnostic. Once I ran that, the warning stopped recurring and never came back, not only that but it was adjusting the RPM perfectly as needed.
      However, with the other Noctua cooler the message was keep coming up at every restart and the fan was just running on a high rpm no matter what so ended up removing it.
      Can you try to run the Dell diagnostic when you have the fan failure message and see if that fixes it ?

      @@Scott.The.IT.Guy. Hey Scott...thanks so much for the timely reply...this was what I found...ran BIOS diagnostic as suggested by Dell...says everything is fine...still get "rear fan not detected msg etc.,."...when I run Dell SupportAssist says everything is fine...you can hear fans ramp up & down...I can feel gentle the breeze in normal operation ...acts normal to me...while the msg may be disconcerting, practically speaking everything seems fine...systems stays really cool...all fans including 3rd added one, seem to work as advertised...it is weird that now after mkt fan software cannot detect fans???...FYI, I never use plain fan splitters....always use sata powered fan splitters, Noctura in this case, which have the provision for RPM sensing etc.,.ridiles, wrapped in enigmas???...thanks again for detailed video, looking forward to see your future stuff...jo.

More ideas for 8960 videos: 1- can you put more than 64GB of ram into the 2 DIMMs and see if it accepts 2-Can you try putting in 6400MHz DDR5 Rams and see how far you can push it 3- what other good upgrades can we do on it that is worth doing?

    I am the number 1 fan of your channel and at this point trying to decide between Intel i9-14900K and Intel i9-14900KS. The KS version is rating pretty high on benchmarks but wondering if you have any advice on which one we should use? (We use these machines at my startup for AI and they are not used for gamin). You should come visit us in San Francisco, our office has a farm of these machines :)

    • @Scott.The.IT.Guy.
      @Scott.The.IT.Guy.  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That sounds awesome! If you are planning to get multiple of these, I would get just one from each and test them the way you will run them. The KS is only 200 MHz faster which results in games about a 2% average performance increase.
      That number could be higher in your environment. I used to work for a company as a part of the hardware team. When it was time to get new desktops for the software developers we got one PC with top end CPU and a pc with a high end cpu.
      Three days later they came over and said that when they compiling code the top end CPU is 8 minutes faster than the cpu just below. He said they need to that least six times a day so that 8 minutes that is almost 1 hour faster/ employee and they had 40 software developers.

    Hi Scott,
    Thanks for producing another informative video. I concur 100% with your advice. I ran a Dell XPS Studio 8700 from 2007 to 2017, and then an 8930 from 2017 to 2024 and ongoing. The latter has an Intel Core i7 8700 @ 3.20GHz running at around 58 centigrade. Is 58 too hot? Should I replace the original Dell stock CPU cooler with an aftermarket Noctua air cooler?

    • @Scott.The.IT.Guy.
      @Scott.The.IT.Guy.  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello,
      I think just taking the original cooler off cleaning it and putting new thermal grease on it will give you a measurable improvement.
      I tried two different Noctua cooler on this xps 8960 and gained no significant increase compared to the Dell tower cooler. Other hand , I was ended up with an error message at every boot , that the Noctua fan can’t be recognized or failed but at least was working properly.
      Do you have the pancake style cooler or the tower cooler ?

    1) does there appear to be any proprietary connections for the Video Card? Would it be possible to use the card in a new system?

    I didn't think it would be possible use the 14900K and a 4060 Ti with the 460 W PSU in this system. I would really like to see some data as far as power draw and thermals with that setup. I kept the 13700 in my 8960 (I really have no need for an i9) but was thinking of upgrading the GPU (it came with a 3050) and I was wary of wanting to put anything more than a 4060 in to replace the 3050. I would also be curious to see how the 460 W PSU compares to the 750/1000 W PSU since the spec page for the 8960 says those are platinum.

    • @Scott.The.IT.Guy.

      I was wondering as well , but It is possible.I had no problem running the 14900k with the 4060Ti on the 460w PSU.
      If you head over to Dell and select the customized 8960 with the same cpu and gpu , they will be shipped with the 460w psu. If you switch over to 4080 it will tell you that the minimum pus needs to be 750w the 4090 will require the 1000w.

      @StephenStephenson-mo3ns 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Interesting, Dell's website also claims it should be fine to have a 4070 with the 460 W PSU but I have never seen even a conservative spec that suggests going that low wattage with a 4070. Makes me wonder what kind of OEM 4070 they might use. Incidentally, I'm assuming the 4060Ti in your video was an OEM variant as well? Also, according to Dell's specs on the 8960 the x16 slot only works at x8 lanes so you won't get the most out of any GPU that utilizes x16 lanes like the 4070 or 4080. A 4060 or 4060Ti would seem to be ideal.

They used to have Ti in stock but not anymore.... I'm thinking about buying just with basic Intel Graphics and buy a RTX 4060 Ti separately and put in, in that case... I'm new to upgrading desktops/PCs, but do I have to do anything else the just plug in the new graphics card? Don't have to do anything with the power supply...guess it has enough power for some upgrades... no software things that needs to be programmed or anything.. the computer adjusts automatically..?
      I do some Photoshop work so I read that a mid-range graphics card was recommended.... also to be checked for the future.

      Before you do that, I am in the process of making a video how to replace & install Dell coolers, however I hope I can install a Noctua NH-U12A in this XPS which should be the best air cooler options for the 8960.

    There is nothing good about a system that features a custom mobo and PSU. The green DIMMs look like they are JEDEC and with RAM that is slow as fuck the CPU doesn't do as much. Replace it with a 6400C30 or something like that then see if any of those coolers are going to be enough for anything. I am not even going to start with that hermetically-sealed case. That thing is a disgrace.
    That system is shit.

      Thank you for your comment!
      Of course, you can buy better parts which are prone to significantly higher performance.
      This is just an option on the market for someone who does not want/can/need to build a custom PC. This PC was on sale a few days ago with an i5-14600 for $698 without the RTX. For what it is and for what it costs I think this is a great option.
