@@bananesalee7086 I think its from one of the "How to Train Your Dragon" movies, where Hiccups Dad sees his Mother again after it was assumed she died years ago.
Slightly sad and yet also uplifting that a young martial artist relies on his skills to care for his whole family. 1,000 years later and this is still relatable.
this was often times a reality story, young men were sent to long campaigns finding out their parents or family have died or moved on it's not all fun and games especially with how rigid chinese society could be
There's an infinity of chinese novels that touch on similar stories, some with fantastical historical legends and others focused more on military historical journeys and an infinity more focused on fictional characters based on legends and folklore, most of them are available to read online.
@ I understand your meaning, but I meant "temporally" not "historically". I like learning about bureaucracies from a very long time ago and how we humans have constructed our most complex societies in pretty much identical ways since the beginning, not how we were so "different" and now we are so "modern".
@ very true! If I were to narrow down what it is that I find so fascinating, I would probably say that it is the "complexity" of the society itself, not necessarily how old it is. So I guess I'm just as much of a fan of complex bureaucracies, and the societies they support, in the present day as well. Really, it's the whole "human experience" that I find interesting. The more complex our society, the more cool stuff we can make. But at the same time, the more complex the society, the more damage it can do if it chooses to do so (or if enough external and/or internal factors impact it at the same time). Complexity!
The bureaucratic system of ancient China was the most advanced in the world and the closest to modern times. This is also the reason why East Asian countries are the most developed regions after North America and Europe.
It sounds like an amazing journey for Chu Hong! I love how the video showcases not just martial arts but also the competitive spirit of the time. Can’t wait to see how he performs in the archery tournament!
Kinda sad most of the stories promoted by the West regarding China are solely focused on the North. I have seen little of the Fishermen and seamen of the south, or the many Han Chinese living on the historical southern frontier and coexisting with the myriad of other cultures and peoples. Always the same story:farmers in north China with the threat of nomad invasion. Not of the stories of Wakou pirates raiding Chinese merchant vessels, or Chinese seamen themselves taking to piracy as far south as Malaya. Yes, this was most common in the Ming and Qing, but they are but some stories which can be talked about in regards to the rich history of southern China.

A dowry is a gift given to the groom’s family alongside the bride, and has been a tradition for quite some time, I’m surprised you’ve never heard of it, seeing that it’s also practiced in Southern China (my family somewhat does it).
@Schizz76 may be it's for some minorities. But being a descendant of the Han ethnic , it has been the tradition that the man gives dowry to the girl's family. That's a joke in Malaysia, if you want to save money, you can consider marrying an Indian wife, so that the dowry cancel out both sides. Hahaha.
@ weird, IM Malaysian, and the money went from the bride’s family to the groom. The only difference we had in our marriages was that the groom also contributed (that’s because my father’s side is a lot more wealthier).
I hope he was able to later reconnect with his farmer friend like "bro, I'm moving the fam to the imperial city and I asked for your family to come too" or something like that.
I love the voice over but can someone please cultural consult on the character design. Great info but for the love of god in 2025 can someone please provide the historic references of clothes and hair to the character designers. It seems the clothes and hair style cant decide whether its in China or Japan.

Sorry to get off topic, but TH-cam is increasingly increasing the frequency and timing of advertisements. I just skipped 3 advertisements one after the other. It's difficult to watch, especially when you just want to listen, like a podcast, while you're doing some activity or taking a shower, for example. And don't give me that talk about paying Premium. I should win something because I've been commenting, posting videos, giving likes, responding to surveys for 10 years and still, whether I want to or not, I watch the advertisements. It's unbearable!🤨

Gunpowder weaponry in song dynasty China were either arrows strapped to rockets, fire lances (a shotgun strapped to a tip of a spear) or bamboo cannons, gunpowder weaponry never took off in China due to its ineffectiveness as a siege weapon due to the construction methods of fortifications and probably conservatism.

Tragic the mongols happened shortly after this period. China was on the brink of industrialisation in the late Song Period. But I guess God had his reasons for not letting it happen first in the East.
