I love the way he makes every piece of music his own, he does it with this too! He doesn't try to copy anyone who has gone before, he plows his own furrow! He is an amazing talent!

Looks like Trifonov has about three different performances of this Schumann/Liszt here on TH-cam....this one, an encore, and an audio. I didn't know this was such a popular piece. I've never heard it played for all the concerts I've been to. The first time I heard was about the time Cliburn was making one of his many comebacks around the late 80's. He played this at a gala of some sort on television. Before performing, he told the touching story of Schumann's love for Clara and then proceeded to give a knockout rendition as only Cliburn can do.

I did not know what you said. But it was Trifonovs greatest triumphs including Widmung.👍 1-5-22.

He was only 20 when this was recorded during a competition. He already plays the Chopin Etudes like a master. I agree that Cliburn at a later age played it better. And, for that matter, Yundi Lee does too. But by all evidence Trifonov will be one of the great ones.

in response to Gerrie, when I visited the top piano store in Manhattan, the owner told me a story about how the Fazioli sometimes is just too bright for some compositions. Despite the control a skilled pianist can exert, some instruments can only be coaxed so much. So maybe the TONE issue addressed by Gerrie is a product of a poorly selected instrument for this piece

He is, after all, only 20. I think his interpretation is quite fresh in comparision to some of my older favourites such as Bolet who was a master of this piece. Very talented boy. I don't care so much for the brilliant tone of the piano___a bit too much for this piece.

I like the tone of the Fazioli but it's not perfect for everything. I'm an even bigger fan of the golden age American pianos with all their sweetness.

He didn't even win this competition, did he? I also like to hear other pianos and this time, I enjoyed the Fazioli. I don't always. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. I thought this one sounded terrific. He's now considered an outstanding young pianist. And he is, in my opinion.

Very lyrical played. He could be an outstanding musician, if he does not succumb to his brilliant technique and continue to learn music. A great price as the Chopin Competition is sometimes more hindrance than help.

Sublime playing but Tel Aviv looks just a bit too much like London's Wigmore Hall.

It sure doesn't - this is Wigmore Hall, the Tel Aviv venue to which I've been many times looks nothing like it, and is sure NOT adorned with a cupola painted in the style of Christian iconography. I'd love to know how and why the official account of the Rubinstein competition got it so obviously wrong.

Katherine Hepburn (playing Clara Schumann) got it right when she scolds Liszt for his empty show of pyrotechnics on his version of this glorious love song Schumann wrote for his bride, Clara. I love Liszt, and acknowledge his monumental contribution to the art of piano playing, but its hard to argue against the vulgarity in much of his output.

+lourak613 You remember that movie, huh...Song of Love. It was a touching moment. I recall the devotee of Liszt telling him afterwards, "How dare she talk to you, the great Liszt in such a fashion", to which Liszt replied, "Leave her alone. Much of what she said was true." The only thing I'll say against Hepburn is that at the end when she was playing Schumann's concerto that was about the worst hand faking I've ever seen. It's obvious she never worked with a pianist to make her hands look believable.

It is not hard at all to argue against any vulgarity in Liszt's version of this song by Schumann. Instead it shows good taste in its pyrotechnics and it adds an emotional glow to the original theme.

I hugely disagree with that! Because of that sentence, I will never ever touch a pice by Clara.
I think she actually understood that Liszt was a better composer than her husband, and most others composers of their time, and she was deeply jealous.
All the things Clara said about Liszt, tells us that she used all her time to blame Liszt, and claiming that he don’t where a good composer.
I think she said it in pure malice, and to hurt the reputation of Liszt.
We know the word of Wagner: “is there a more MUSICALLY composer than Liszt?”
There is a great misunderstanding in that some people think Liszt was a better pianist than a composer.
He actually was equally as great composer as he was a great pianist. And he was the best pianist of his time. If not all time.
The same should be said about he as a composer. More and more people recognise this.

  • @Ernesto7608

This is surely a good interpretation. But I find others quite superior. For example, the one by Yundi Li and the immortal one by Van Cliburn. This rendition is rather plain, it passed by without me hardly noticing it.
