This is how I imagined Chopin would have looked and sounded.
Looked? Hardly, Chopin weighed around 30 kg less than Trifonov and looked semi French-Slavonic.
Sounded? Probably not, Chopin very likely sounded like no modern pianist whatsoever (nor like any of his contemporary colleagues). Countless people called his play style and the magic he could create while playing utterly unique (his students Mikuli and Gutman, Liszt, Clara+Robert Schumann, Berlioz and many more). There was much more to the musician Chopin than his compositions, but that's all we got left from him. His other great skills vanished with him. He was a master improviser, and he was famous for the ability to befog the auditor with an irresistible mist of sound. Some critics bemoaned his lack of power and brilliant style, but none ever denied his unique originality and his extraordinarily smooth technique. After his death, many said that half of his musical genius and his secrets had followed him into the grave.
He was some sort of unique phenomenon, both as a musician and a person.
But Trifonov does play Chopin really well, imho!

Absolutely superhuman performance. Anyone that plays the piano reasonably well will be aware that this was very special. I just hope Chopin was listening to his awesome composition, played on the world's greatest piano (Fazioli) by one of the world's greatest pianists!

I remember Mr. Trifonov's playing these 8 years ago as it was yesterday. Fryderyk Chopin would be so proud of him. And it really does not matter now that the silly jury awarded him just 3rd prize then.

Trifonov is a great pianist but if you watch and listen to the versions by Kate Liu, and Krystian Zimerman you understand the difference between first and third place. I just found myself wondering if DT would make it to the end without taking a breath at this speed and it was full of mistakes (not fatal by any means but if you are showcasing your virtuosity first and foremost then not a good look). Liu's version is better than this musically but still too delicate. Zimerman plays it in such a way that by the last minute of the piece you have to stand up and you can feel the excitement in your chest. Every nuance of the keyboard is explored. He's a musician's musician and a showman at the same time. Trifonov improved after this, but this is not first place playing. A close second to Zimerman would be Yundi Li. He also won.

To my shame, I’ve only just in the last few days discovered Daniel Trifonov through the transcendental etudes, I am absolutely hooked. He is just unbelievable,will go down in history as one of the truly greats.
Already is. Came across him surfing for music on youtube without any foreknowledge of who he was; and was completely overwhelmed with his incredible musical insight, emotionality tied to amazing control, and mind boggling technique. Doesn't play music so much as channel the spirits of Chopin, Lizst, Rachmaninov, Stravinsky. Instantly recognized him as belonging to a pantheon of greats, if not already at the top of the heap: Horzowski, Rubinstein, Arrau, Richter, Horowitz, Argerich. Mind Blown.
He's average. At best.

9 years ago and already a prodigy! Just heard him last week live in Indianapolis playing Schumann's piano concerto in A Minor. Sublime does not begin to describe it. Truly the best classical piano player of the moment.

Even if I don’t agree with a particular interpretation I know that it’s the product of serious thought and the next time I hear him play it he might have changed his mind and heart and interpret it differently. He lives and breathes the music and the word that comes up more frequently describing his playing than I’ve ever heard used before is how he caresses the keys-really an astonishing pianist and a great gift to the world

not the best... Sokolov, Volodos, could claim too for instance. (and I like deeply Trifonov but I love Volodos too, with larger colors in my opinion...) anyway,it makes not really sense to think this way, there isn't first pianist but many fascinating ones.

I was in the same studio with him studying with Mr. Babayan. I don’t remember him practicing all this rep in preparation for the Chopin competition... I must have not paid enough attention. I do remember him working on the concerto and some etudes. It’s always fun to get together with him whenever he comes to town.

It took a succession of three Slavic composers, Chopin, Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov, to take piano music to such heavenly and complex heights. And it just happened to be at the time when piano design advances resulted in the beautiful sound that we are accustomed to today.

To whom criticizing him, remember when he performed this piece he was only a teenager (19 years old) .
This is an average age of all competitors. Zimmerman was less than 19 when he played the same piece in 1975 Chopin Competition in Warsaw.

TH-cam also has him playing Rachmaninov (and probably more, I did not go through all of the videos) He has a large repertoire. And do I feel a love for music which goes way beyond performing? YES!

@@michaelw.4469, the Transcendental Etudes usually are performed all together. I think it was a Liszt intention. I might be wrong but whenever I heard them from radio it was the case. I never saw one etude played.

Watching those gorgeous hands play that music is nearly as transporting as listening to it. Beyond fabulous.
Watching Daniil play is an intimate experience, I almost want to avert my eyes, he is so engaged and so unabashed in his connection to the music, like he's in love with every note. I wish competitions would be a thing of the past, it is so inimical to art. UPDATE AT 4:20: Also inimical to art is TH-cam putting an AD right at this moment when the Andante is fading away. LISTENERS: If you love classical music, REFUSE to pay money to TH-cam until they stop interrupting musical works with ads. Seriously. Don't be held hostage.

He was the best performer that I have ever heard at a Chopin competition, not only from that edition but from all editions. And they give him the third price, what a joke. Martha Argerich who was in the jury, picked Daniil Trifonov as the first prize winner for the Chopin piano competition, she was able to see his value since then.

The andante spianato was lovely and the grand polonaise was impeccable. The ornaments are so clear and delicate (really musical). It was a little too fast though. I enjoyed it. Bravo!!
