  • University of Nottingham chemist Professor Martyn Poliakoff - star of periodicvideos series ( / periodicvideos ) - reveals a symbolic attachment to his favourite element, Sodium.
Each day in December, we'll publish a new video revealing the elements that really excite and inspire people.

This was grand. Coupled with the hand gestures, his candid approach left me blinkless.

The names come from the 1st letter. But if another element begins with the same letter, then one element keeps the singular 1st letter. The other element with the same letter adds another letter that is the next or the next syllable, in lower case next to it. Sometimes the element was called something else and is named after its Latin name. Because that clashes with its English name.

Best favourite element so far, what a great story.

this is probably the most personal reason for a favourite element compared to any of the others. I'm inclined to believe it's actually his favourite element and not something he came up with after being asked to come up with a favourite element.

I really love this series of elemental favorites.

Why on earth is the sodium sodium in English why it is not Natrium or why potassium is potassium not kalium?

Do you think Professor Poliakoff ever gave his mum Sodium Iodide salts? I mean the syntax would be wrong, being NaI, not INa, but still

    Great. For lots of reasons.
The other videos, so far, have deliberately, strenuously, avoided the stereotype of a scientist. This guy, with bow tie (with elements) and frizzy hair, is straight out of central casting (though someone should get him a white coat). He could be Frink's dad.
    Then he starts talking.

so his favorite element is natrium? [what much of the world calls sodium]

Professor Poliakoff's lab coat is actually red. You can see him wearing it sometimes on Periodic Videos.

Love this video and all the others. Definitely this is my favorite channel. Quick question, what is the art in the background? Could you tell us the story about it?

This videos wasn't actually filmed in the Ri so we're not sure what the art in the background depicts. Sorry!

I might be wrong but the art looks like one of those molecular bonds teaching materials and it looks like the one for caffeine.

And if his mother had been called 'Kay', he might like Potassium, natrium-ally enough!

  • @13Psycho13
    @13Psycho13 11 ปีที่แล้ว

So it's more like a love/hate relationship with Sodium then..
Assuming the professors mother has passed a while.

"you might think sodium because when you drop it in water you get an explosion"
"and you might also think its because sodium is in table salt"
