+FinalGlideAus Great idea! I decided to do the same thing when I first started FPV earlier this year only because I didn't like losing stabilization and/or control of the copter at min throttle. Now we have air mode, sweet!
Key points - turn on idle up, or in Cleanflight turn off motor stop and turn on PID at min throttle so that you can drop throttle to zero and still have PID authority as you are floating up (after hard punchup) and then free falling back down.
One thing I don't see mentioned is that Steele uses 3 blade propellers. This is alot of surface area. When you keep them idling and you are falling you have a brake effect. Instead of air rushing past them they are blocking some of it slowing the descent. This is the same idea why gliders have folding props. Because a freewheeling prop will slow you down. Also why on a airplane if you run a large prop that it helps slow you down on final but if you dead stick in your plane glides much faster. Not to mention in this case by idling the motors are faster to spin back up to save you when you need to flip back instead of the huge current draw from a dead stop. Great video! Just wanted to mention this concept. :^)

they don't use idle up anymore they are using beta flight and "air Mode" now! And motors may have to be higher then idle, some quads will become unstable at such a low idle
+MrEklectic FWIW, I still use idle up for exactly the reason you say. When I chop the throttle suddenly, my copter is briefly destabilized. So I use idle up to keep the throttle slightly higher when I chop it. This is even with Air Mode active.

When you use ur idle up method, Do you still have motor Stop disabled? My motors sunnysky 2204 with bl20a Start at around 1150, isnt that a little bit to high to use the idle up method on the taranis?
+skatebjarne If you have idle up active, then motor stop doesn't matter. Motor stop takes effect when the throttle goes below min_check. When idle up is active, the throttle never goes below min_check. Regarding your second question, you are confusing min_throttle, which is an throttle value that is OUTPUT from the FC to the ESC, with min_check, which is an stick position value that is INPUT from the receiver to the FC. When idle up is active, the INPUT stick position stays above min_check. This will cause your motors to spin slightly faster than min_throttle, whatever min_throttle happens to be. When you set up your idle up "DIFF" value, set it so that the throttle channel just barely exceeds min_check, NOT min_throttle. So for example, a typical configuration might be min_check=1050 and min_throttle=1150. You would set up your idle up DIFF value so that the throttle channel stayed above 1055 or 1060. This would cause the motors to idle at, perhaps 1155 or 1160.
+skatebjarne BTW, my personal preference is currently to run motor_stop active, and idle up also active. This means that during normal flight, the motors act as if motor_stop was disabled. But if I am working on the bench, I can flip a switch on my transmitter to disable idle up, which allows me to arm the copter without spinning the motors, for troubleshooting purposes.

Hi mr bardwell i have a little question. from the moment i flip my quad 90° upside down (after a throttle punch) my PID (i think ) stop the upward float motion. do you know what this can be ? or is it maybe the fc or esc i'm using? +Michel Van Camp make sure min_throttle is not too high. Make sure you are lowering the throttle all the way. If your copter is heavy, lighten it. Punch harder to go up faster.
+Jacky Heshi What happens when you crash then? You destroy your props and almost certainly ruin your motors too. You could do this but you'd have to have a kill switch of some sort or you wouldn't even be able to pick up the quad after a crash.

So I'm just sort of getting into (FPV) i have been flying since September, Manly just aerial filming i have the Xk Detect X380 for that and the Syma x8c but my starter quad was the syma x5sw FPV wifi edition and the syma x8c. but i just ordered the Stock Fpv kit for my x380 and i ordered a xk 250 alien with FPV and i got the Xk airdancer x350 and i ordered the Fpv kit for it as well. I thought that flying the xk airdancer x350 with fpv would be really cool since it has both 3d and 6d mode to fly upside down. But to get into racing or just have a really fast racing quad what can you recommend for me to buy to have a fast really fast quad.
+Andy Shaffer The fastest copters are light, and have a very small aerodynamic profile. Look to the Krieger and the Shrike if ultimate speed is your goal. But they are some of the most difficult to build because they are so small and compact, and if you are not an experienced builder, I don't recommend them. The next step up would be a 210 size frame like a QAV210 or an Alien 5". If you want to, you can find much cheaper Chinese knock-offs of these frames from Banggood--your call where you want to put your money. The 210 size frame will have worse aerodynamics than the "Pure X" style frames, but can still be very fast. I can't stress enough the importance of light weight when building a racer. With light weight, you can go to higher-kv (lower torque) motors and still not suffer a handling penalty. This increases acceleration and top speed. You also need high-C-rating batteries that can feed your motors without sagging, but unfortunately, marketing numbers mean nothing, and practical test results are few and far between. Don't just buy a battery with a ridiculous C-rating on the label because it's probably BS. There isn't really a simple answer as to what goes into a really fast quad, but this should get you started.
Absolutely yes i will look in to that i thought about getting this Eachine racer 250 Amazon has it for 189.00 with prime so Yes i figure something like that just to start out on and yes they have the kits to build your own the way you want it. and i was planning on doing something like that with my G.P.S quads but like you said. Flying yes is one thing but building your own is altogrther different that like waiting for strike 3 at half time in the super bowl totally different but yes I'm going to just get something like the eachine 250 for now until later then ill know more about what I'm going to need to build my quad like what is the best size motor for a certain amount of weight i don't know how they calibrate themselves. or if that's done manually? with these flyers.
Andy Shaffer The best thing you can do is look at what pro pilots are flying. There is no single best answer for what motor and prop to pick. If there were, everybody would fly that. But there are definitely combinations that do NOT work well--for example, an 1806 motor will probably lack the torque to spin a 5045BN prop very effectively. A 2208 motor would be bad to pair with a very small 4045 prop. Etc... If in doubt, look at what the pros are flying, or look at high-end ARF or RTF kits and copy them. But definitely do your research. The Vortex RTF 250 copter came with 1806 motors, which were not really the highest-performing at the time it came out.
That's very true. Just from your personal experience in using different propellers, Some say that propellers when in balance can increase speed, flight time, and the life of your motors. Increasing the life of your motors sounds about right. The speed however I'm not sure. i just put Dji 9450 self locking propellers on my x380 and to me the new propellers seem to increase speed by a little bit they are a half inch longer and made different from the stock ones, so it may be possible to increases speed a little i would presume. And flight time, so if the propellers are in balance and the motors are running smother then once again i guess its possible it could increase the flight time by a little bit also couldn't hurt it none anyway. but yes i want to build something later on from scratch well not entirely from scratch i thought about ordering all the parts and transmitter i would need and build one out of conduit of cpvc plastic pipe i have seen a couple other design's made similar.
I've seen others and also been doing this LOS for years, not sure why it's considered new if it's fpv. Good explanation but about 6 minutes too long to describe cutting the throttle and disabling motor stop (cheating way) :)

Was having problem with my quad. But I got it figured out and tested the idle up in the garage. Awww man can't wait to fly it for real.

If you get Eachine get Wizard 220 don't get the Eachine 250 racer its not great
