@@chrislonghurst7249 "American tables?" Buddy, our ordinary tables are the same size as yours. We have the exact same issue of publishers publishing games too big to fit on them. They expect you to have a dedicated gaming table which I find quite annoying.
Quick review of the expansions for anyone that wants em Carnage at devils run: it's literally just more tiles for more randomization, more roads too. A perfect expansion for anyone who loved the base game Choppe shoppe: this expansion adds special player powers and upgraded cars that make you feel like an actual warmonger leader type trying to rip across the road with your crew of specialized cars It's great for anyone looking for a slightly advanced game Big rig and the final 5: This expansion feels tricky to review because these unique vehicles you get to drive can feel very unbalanced in certain situations and due to how the game works it feels like those situations happen often and on top of that they don't even let you use the choppe shoppe expansion with this one It feels like a really good idea that needed just a tad more work The only expansion that I wouldn't call fantastic BONUS TIME: The extra ammo mini expansion is an amazing Lil bonus that feels best described as just Hey, that idea from the cutting room floor could just be a pack of cards Which might sound like a negative, but it's not it's great it's just a bunch of small ideas that just aren't worth a full mega expansion like Hey, this card means these roads are windy This card says I have a one use missile This card says I have to make sure so and so doesn't make it off this road For less than 20 bucks, it adds a lot of nice little things It's like good icing on an already fantastic cake
I backed the newest expansion on Kickstarter and got the big box with everything. The game looks like exactly the sorta thing I love, can't wait for it all to show up sometime in November
Agree. Extra Ammo and Choppe Shoppe are must adds after your first game. They just make it better. Later add Carnage, as it ads new damage types, get to know the base game first.
The inability to purchase expansions retail is stopping me from getting the game. Bummer. Did not back the kickstarter because of shipping and 21% vat added to the total price.
I too can suffer from the choice paralysis, and I think "review just the base board game by itself, worry about expansions later if ever" is a good point to focus on. The base game should stand on its own merits.
Especially when you can't get the expansions because of Kickstarter bullshit. I picked up Thunder Road for $45. I'll have to get the expansions off of eBay for $100 a piece. Screw that. The base game is just fine as it is.
Yeah- I buy expansions to add variety or something new to games I *already* play and like. The state the game is sold in is the state that the publisher has decided is good enough to sell as a whole product, and that's the product I want to know if it's worth spending my money on.
@@carlbutcher2268 It's a fun game and worth getting. Everyone I've played it with likes it. I've seen a lot of people say that they regret getting the Maximum Chrome edition because the base game is just fine on it's own and considerably cheaper.
@@HarryBuddhaPalm I have all of the expansions and while I would defiantly say the bse game is fine on its own, I do think some of the expansions are really worth it. One is just extra road tiles to add a bit of variety and also adds a mechanic where your cars can catch fire. Its simple enough that I dont think there is any reason not to always play with it. The other is the one that adds different drivers and mods. Picking your driver really gives you the feeling that you are a different crew than the other players instead of being carbon copies. The mods are similar. Really makes your cars feel like yours. Not necessary but I dont ever play the game without them. TLDR: Carnage at Devils Run is a no brainer buy, the others I really like but dont feel they are necessary.

One of my favorite things about this game is that because the finish line appears once 1 player is eliminated, that 1 eliminated player won't be out of the game for too long.
Played the original Thunder Road with my friends a bunch of times in college ("There is no mercy on Thunder Road!"). This was a great revisit of the game.

Regarding the cards at 13:38 - Let it be known that the card modules are not in the base game! It's from the ""Extra Ammo" mini-expansion, sold separately.
Played this game once, had a wonderful time. During it, one played attacked me with the helicopter, hit. I revealed the damage, got shrapnel. Rolled the dice. The shrapnel launched over a plateau, hut the dudes own car, causing him to vear off into his death. Was splendid turn of events.
As a fan of the original Thunderroad, I was very wary of the re-make, While it was not perfect the original, was often a palette cleanser after a heavy gaming night or all-day-a-thon. it was light and quick and did enough to have us rolling about laughing as he blew each other up etc. I mainly backed the re-make for just some extra boards some newer models and didn't give it too much thought. then I played... and I have to admit it improves on the original in almost every regard. I wanted Thunderroad to be a simple no-brainer and it still was, but it just had more options, better options, it was well designed and the mechanics were brutal in the push-your-luck style, and the delicious hilarity when everything backfires. I truly love the original and not just for nostalgic reasons, but thunder road vendetta improves it in every regard.
“The road is infinite, like the neverending staircase in Mario 64” Thank you for giving me the mental image of Immortan Joe doing a backwards long jump skip
This was an impulse buy for me, expensive one to that but the box and content sang to me like a siren! And Im glad it did, this game is such a good time!
Such a great fun game. In my experience people often do the “cool stupid thing” rather than the boring strategic thing. Can recommend the ‘carnage at devils run’ for more road boards and hazards, and the ‘choppe shoppe’ if you want a slightly more strategic game where each car becomes more unique.
I backed the KS and took a very conservative "wait and see" approach and only got the base game. Then I played it and immediately regretted not getting Carnage for more boards.
I love pulling this one out with the expansions because it's simple and chaotic, but provides players plenty of choice on how they want to race. If you want to rush ahead, you know you're going to be dealing with choppers and random hazards. Try to hang back some and take out other cars? You'll have to get ahead of them at some point to win. And the game ending pretty quickly after the first player is out means there's not a lot of downtime for them sitting out.
This is one of my favorite videos in a hot minute. I feel like I really *get* this game... and want *to* get this game, because it seems like a fantastic game to hoot and holler over with pals!
I had this game back when I was a kid. I don't remember how it played at all. I only remember the track, the cars, and the attack helicopters. And the d6 that only goes to 3 (one of the few pieces of the old game that I still have). This definitely looks like a fun upgrade to all that, and I really want to see what the expansions do.
I completely understand the “choice paralysis” with a game with several expansions, this is one of the first games I’ve seen that seems so small and straightforward that I WANT more of it, expansions with cool new cars and sandstorms and DINOSAURS!
I just learned that the hiss of instant cream dispensers is the sound I hate and despise the most out of all the sounds that exist in the world... Aside from that, I found Thunder Road to be very easy, very simple, very quick, and very fun. Certainly never regretted backing that particular KS.
This reminds me of the old Games Workshop game Dark Future, which I used to play years ago. That had a similar rolling road, plus shooting cars, and explosions, but it actually came out a couple of years after the original Thunder Road. Incidentally, I googled the lethal dose for whipped cream from a can, and it's 8 squirts. I haven't gone back and counted how many squirts Matt ate in this video but he survived until the end so I assume it was seven or fewer.
Okay, the fact you said you like this game so much just because how much you like rock n roll racing... I played that game so so much as a kid and loved it... You got me sold, so looking forward to getting this game
Roll eternal, to the game nights of Valhalla! Thank you for the review guys. The box looked like a complete flavor win but since the pandemic it’s been so difficult to get people onboard with learning a crunchy game. Good to know this plays how it looks and seems to be a set up, learn the rules, and start playing in ten minutes type.
I was thoroughly and happily surprised by how much I enjoyed this game, and by how much of the theme really comes through while playing. It has been a blast every time I've had a chance to play, and is one I am always happy to see hit the table.
This is great! Also, was the donkey stealing your water a reference to that one fugitive donkey that kept messing with Quinn's side of the demilitarized zone?
I own the Gaslands Refueled book and ThunderRoad. I've yet to play Gaslands because the rule book is pretty large and I have to kitbash all my hot wheels cars first, which means 3d printing or buying or making guns, missile launchers, etc. So for those saying you just rather play Gaslands, that's because you already know the rules and have taken the time to make all the cars. For those choosing which to get into first, ThunderRoad you can play immediately with what you get and simple rules. Gaslands, will take some time to grok the rules, make the cars, make some terrain etc. I also feel like those playing Gaslands, you have to have your own cars you're building, know the rules well, etc. ThunderRoad you just show up, I teach you and we're off! I am keen to play Gaslands but ThunderRoad will get played more for me because it's more approachable for my game group. Cheers!
I don't know about "quick to play". 3 players isn't too bad but I played a four-player game that went well over an hour, which is pretty long for this type of game.
I REMEMBER THIS GAME! So happy to see it remade. I started to think it was a fever dream that it existed. 😂 it's been 40ish years since I played the hell out of it.
I look forward to your videos almost as much as I appreciated Matt saying "Don't worry, I'll be keeping my clothes on for the rest of the video"! Thanks for all the great work!!!
I bought this game today, and played it, and loved it, and thanks! I lost, but in such an epic way. EDIT: Played it some more. With more players I found the beginning to be unforgiving chaos, maybe in a way that irritates new players at first but functions as a crash course for what Thunderroad ist, but overall, the more, the funner it was.
I ❤❤❤ Rock n Roll racing!!! Bonus points for mentioning it. Negative bonus points for not talking about Car Wars. Re-bonus points for using whipped cream as an improved witness me technique.
I love Matt for doing this review. I adore this silly game! It's my Game of the Year for 2023, having gone all-in on the Maximum Chrome edition KS, and with the new Carnival of Chaos expansion set to fulfil before the end of the year, I can comfortably make an agreement that it qualifies for my Game of the Year for 2024 as well. It's so wonderful to teach new players and see them just get the game right away! At our local convention, I played it three times over the three days, with all new players each time and had so much great fun every game. The final game was just before the convention closed when a dad asked if I'd teach him and his two kids. Me and the two boys each killed one of dad's vehicles before the end of the first round of the game, resulting in so much loud laughter from all four of us, as well as a few viewers on the sidelines.
Matt being without clothes is all fine and sexy, but that mustache-makeup combo... He looks a bit like Alice Cooper had a little too much influence on Groucho Marx.
I remember getting the original board game for Christmas one year. I played it for a few months. I don't remember getting rid of it. My mom must have donated it one day when I wasn't looking. Glad to see it lives on.
As an American with unreasonable amounts of space, I still join you in solidarity about the size of the games. I want to be able to REACH everything. Or READ things on the far side of the board.
I love thunder road vanilla so much that I was really happy my group love it too... and want to play it often! So I had to go all in on the complete collection on KS 😊
I remember playing the original at a friend's house and feeling underwhelmed. This does look much better, but ultimately just makes me want to go and play Gaslands.
Rock 'N Roll Racing is the first thing I thought of as the intro to the game was being described. It has also now made it onto the list of games I'd like to make a spiritual successor to in my career as a game dev.
I thought you would also mention the expansions. I'm certainly interested in the other video you mentioned, be it for the expansions of Thunder Road or just optional expansions in general
Man, if there was any way to immediately get me paying attention to this board game, it would be by invoking Rock n Roll Racing. I absolutely loved that game. Cyberhawk was my boy!
Thunder Roads and Boats! Omg 😂🤣💀 But in all seriousness, I've been really hoping that y'all would do a video about this one. Looks like such a great racing game!
I have often not seen the films that adaptations like these were made from. I am deeply glad I made the decision to finally watch Fury Road a few weeks ago or that whipped cream gag would be just *baffling*.
This game looks like a whole lot of fun. In fact, I was about to treat myself to an impulse purchase only to find that it's completely out of stock in the UK.
Glad to see that Thunder Road is getting the recognition it deserves. It's kickstarter fell under the radar, I think because most people had never heard of the original. Those that did remember it, were first on board.
For my game design class I made a Mad Max inspired racing combat game, basically trying to achieve what this game did. We had a raised plastic surface, where the tiles would move under, so everyone would move at the same time and let the carnage begin!
Oh my God! I scrolled past this moe than once because I was weirded out by the image... not realizing who it was and what it was about. Bwahahahaha!!!! 😂 Brilliant!
Oh I remember playing rock and roll racing as a kid on christmas, or maybe some clone of it, in the early 90s. It's been a while since they got into full on costume.
I remember having and loving the original game when I was a kid (yes, I am that old). Obviously, the game has been made a bit more complicated (read: deeper), but from this review makes it seem even more fun. Additionally, my group also still loves playing the Car Wars card game, and we are always on the look out for another copy of it...and Plague and Pestilence. So if anyone has a copy of one or both, let me know.
"Fits on table" is a rarity I appreciate so much in board games these days
Waiting for the first board game so vast it comes with its own table.
Got my copy of Primal the other week and it just *barely* fits on my table. I feel like a lot of these games are designed for (much larger) American tables.

Me and the two boys each killed one of dad's vehicles before the end of the first round of the game, resulting in so much loud laughter from all four of us, as well as a few viewers on the sidelines.
Rock & Roll Racing only had 4 songs, but the game was AMAZING! I still compare modern games to it for top down racing. So Fun!
Absolutely fantastic old-school Shut Up video. Thanks for the laughs 😂
Haha, you look like a post-apocalyptic Mighty Boosh character! Bravo Matt
Played several games of this a few weeks ago, and had a good time.
Laughed so hard at the creme spray.
3:31 That 8-bit Paranoid haha
This version of the song lives in my head rent free. Core memory.
Better than the original. I will die on this hill. -Matt
16-bit 🙏
As an American with unreasonable amounts of space, I still join you in solidarity about the size of the games. I want to be able to REACH everything. Or READ things on the far side of the board.
I love thunder road vanilla so much that I was really happy my group love it too... and want to play it often!
So I had to go all in on the complete collection on KS 😊
I remember playing the original at a friend's house and feeling underwhelmed. This does look much better, but ultimately just makes me want to go and play Gaslands.
Knew it was going to be a banger as soon as I saw the thumbnail.
Well done Matthew.
This video dropped while I was at the cinema watching Furiosa. Synergy!
Thunder Roads & Boats
I'm so glad I experienced Roads & Boats once for that deep cut
Looking forward to Matt's series of cream reviews
Rock 'N Roll Racing is the first thing I thought of as the intro to the game was being described. It has also now made it onto the list of games I'd like to make a spiritual successor to in my career as a game dev.
kinda looks like matt is sad he couldn't join quinns in the mad-max RP meetup in the american desert
At 13:25 I honestly though he was describing the cream.
You convinced me to get several times over... Once every few minutes I think. I don't think I'll wait for it to be translated before getting it.
Those whip cream gags got me lol
Thunder Roads and Boats! Omg 😂🤣💀
But in all seriousness, I've been really hoping that y'all would do a video about this one. Looks like such a great racing game!
"Rock and roll racing boardgame". This put a rocket on thunderroad to the top of my boardgames to buy list.
A mad Matt Lees video is what the world needed today
Those last 5 seconds made me bruise a rib laughing
For my game design class I made a Mad Max inspired racing combat game, basically trying to achieve what this game did.
We had a raised plastic surface, where the tiles would move under, so everyone would move at the same time and let the carnage begin!
Hell yeah to Rock n Roll Racing, I loved that game as well. I need this board game
Oh my God! I scrolled past this moe than once because I was weirded out by the image... not realizing who it was and what it was about.
Bwahahahaha!!!! 😂
Brilliant!
Why am I so exited about the posibility of "Thunder Roads and Boats"?
About friggin time for a Thunder Road Video
Fantastic game - had the MB version as a kid in the 80's. The amount of carnage and fun with the new version is priceless!!
Loved Micro Machines and Rock n' Roll Racing! Great games
Oh I remember playing rock and roll racing as a kid on christmas, or maybe some clone of it, in the early 90s.
It's been a while since they got into full on costume.
Delightful game! As soon as I played it, I knew I had to get one!
Six! I’m pretty sure I’m still the only one that gets this reference but I may be wrong lol
It's been a long time since we've gotten a "six".
The happy feet reference 😂
Dropping by for the shout outs to Micromachines and Rock n Roll Racing, both stone cold classics 🙌(and the last racing games I was any good at)
Ridiculous and wonderful. You continue to delight :)
I find this game to be a delight.
Although it gets better with more players, 2 is good, 3 is great, and 4 is pure mayhem :)
Love Rock and Roll Racing! Still have it. Racing Destruction Set for my Commodore 64 is another one that this is like.
I dont know whether to be worried about matt or impressed by his commitment.
Great video! I enjoyed watching it at x1000 speed so I could comment
