      Agreed. Sondheim did a Cinderella (Into the Woods), but he created a fairytale that focus on real life issues, so it was a new experience that felt familiar. ALW went for the commercial success of Cinderella when you’d think he’d challenge himself with….. I don’t know….. Rumplestiltskin. 🤣 Called RUMP the MUSICAL!

      @@CareOffBook exactly! And into the woods is so different in a way that makes it it’s own thing….I have to say I’m wondering if Andrew Lloyd Webber saw the Camila Cabello Cinderella and wanted to make his own (I don’t know if this musical predates that one) also I really didn’t like the Camilla Cabello version but it’s better than Andrews musical because at least she had a dream to make dresses. Pretty sad when a version of something makes you like another version that you don’t like.

    The name change to Bad Cinderella seems to be the only positive change so far ( in London far too many children went to the show - parents thinking it was a Disney-like show). I saw it twice in the West End, and really enjoyed it. Yes , if you want to pick holes, the plot needed work . But it has enjoyable songs and it was a spectacle .Sadly Broadway will not have the spectacular revolve where the stage and front of the stalls revolves to put the stage in the middle of the theatre. The costume choice for Linedy in Bad Cinderella is ridiculous ( she has to be totally different to the other townspeople - thats the whole point of the show). Yes i expect ALW to blame everyone but himself when the show closes.

    I think there’s a huge problem in how quickly stories become shorthand; so in this case: “everyone knows how Cinderella stories go” so there’s no point in really *doing* anything with it beyond a fresh coat of paint, maybe changing some minor things (it’s not *the* Prince but his younger brother!) and that’s “all you need to do” to make this Cinderella; and that’s not how adaptations work; this show is clearly trying to be a new thing but it barely gets the point from the original so it doesn’t actually know where it can go from there; Mickey Jo and Wait in the Wings said it best: the show has a major identity crisis and it doesn’t look like that’s going to be properly addressed or fixed any time soon (if it will be at all)

      Stories like Cinderella have millions of variations from different countries across history, each with their own unique interpretation of the characters and events ,as well as the moral teachings within the tales ... The Cinderella most people are familiar with is a creation of Walt Disney.If you read Perraeult's Cendrillon she's very different in terms of personality to Walt's ... Here are some examples of what I mean :
      Disney's 1950 Cinderella: a kind hopeful dreamer that looks in the bright side of things . Positivity is her greatest characteristic
      Grimm's 1812 Aschenputtel: kind , but with severe anxiety issues,extremely insecure and her most highlighted characteristic is her indecisiveness
      Perraeult's Cendrillon 1697 : Has low self esteem and low self worth ,fools around with her stepsisters when they tell her about the mystery girl,her being like :Yeeees keep telling me about that girl that I totally have no idea who she can possibly be 😜. Ask her older sister for a dress to see the mysterious princess but Charlotte declines and insults her , she's described as being relieved at her sisters response subtlety telling to the reader that she enjoys fooling everyone at the ball ( If you pay attention to the actual writings of the story you'll find that she's much more layered than people believe ) .Her greatest strength is her kindness and ability to forgive
      Bassile's La Gatta Cenerentola 1634 :She commits murder at the beginning of the story,is actively spiteful towards her step family ... And overall very untraditional when it comes to Cinderella variants ... If you want to depict her as a spicy 🔥 female character Bassile's version is the right one for you ...
      Lots of the old folk stories have unlimited potential with how many variations there are and each different creative mind giving each own unique interpretation of the events and characters and themes ... Into the Woods is a very good example of that ,the reason as to why it succeeded is that they knew what they wanted to do and how to do it well, same goes with Walt Disney's animated adaptation ... ALW half assed this project, just like most of his ... LOVE NEVER DIES is a good example of that,I personally agree with the critics on this one: He's terribly overrated

For the show to even just make enough to run in todays market it had to be playing to an at least 85% sold out house, however for the last year it’s been unfortunately consistently only playing to 70-79% capacity meaning it’s been losing money.

    You are right with speeding up the song!!! I love it!
    I just hate that both the west end and Broadway performers, cast, & crew are just getting shit on
    THEY ARE AMAZING PEOPLE
    It's the book & lyrics that are the problem, it's been the problem since the concept album
    And yeah the Broadway version from what I've seen in clips did everyone wrong with the costuming choices and I don't want to even fault the costumer because at this point WHO KNOWS who's decision that was tbh
    And Webber just ugghh I can't
    He did it with Sunset, then countless of other shows, and he's just going to point fingers at everyone but himself
    Make the show better because you belive in it, not for tik tok or fame or hype,
    Tooo many people believe in this show for years and he's dragged them through the mud
    And idk who else gets a say but whoever helped with the book and lyrics just need to sit with ALW and somehow change it

It NEEDS more workshopping. I think if they had tried to course correct a few of these points before opening night, it could have been a vastly different show. There were parts that were already promising (CHP killed the titular song, and a few of the main plot points and twists had potential) but others that needed a rewrite or complete scrapping.
      It sucks because there are a few shows that had fantastic songs written into horrible plots, so they may never get performed again. Case In Point for me: The Mad Hatter from Wonderland.

It seems like you are taking this show too literal. Its a musical not a documentary. I judge a show based on whether I sang the songs after leaving the show or googled them. I did both in this case! I cant say the same for other so called hits like Mean Girls, Waitress, or Legally Blonde which had forgetable songs. Bad Cinderella had at least 5 that I want on my playlist. The book and songs need work. I'm shocked to see that Emerald made this. After coming off of Promising Young Woman, I expected more from her.
    Book: why is Cinderella bad? If uniformity is the norm and beauty has a price, let Cinderella be the only authentic girl in town. The book can still focus on the superficial look that the town has on beauty, but let Cinderella be beautiful from the inside: caring, loving, forgiving.
    However this clashes with the current transformation and ball scene. Maybe at her lowest of points, desperate to help her old time friend, she transforms, only in appearance, to fool the Queen together. However during the ball, despite her to them horrible appearance, they realize that they are really in love. Have a simple miscommunication like in the current musical lead to a fallout between the two. And the Prince repents by giving up his status or superficial "beauty" to the Godmother, returning Cinderella's necklace to her and declaring his love for her.
    The gay Brother subplot can go, the superficial godmother and town can stay. Just be clear of what true beauty is according to the new show.
    The message is perhaps a bit overdone in recent years, but it's still relevant as ever.
    Songs: The weakest part IMHO. All the songs are derivative, meandering, just plain boring. ALW should retire at this point.
    Opening: Belleville - incredible poppy, everything's great here advertisement song in the vein of Wicked's One Short Day.
    Bad Cinderella: let's focus on juxtaposing the view of her with what she actually wants. No good deed vibes.
    Only you, lonely you: give the Prince wants and ambitions of his own, realizing at the end that he's learned what to prioritize through the bond with his childhood friend.
    Just some suggestions, I've been thinking way too much about this musical in the last few months 😅

    Things I don't understand, she sings about being a bad cinderella and not doing or caring what anyone thinks. Then why go to a plastic surgeon? I see her going to a super goth godmother who even makes her more unlike everyone with almost a cruella entrance. I'm not sure why the plot jumps back here. I am also NOT a fan of "gay used as a big plot twist to show how inclusive we are" when you never establish the character without any character development. I hear the stepmother and queen are the best part, a show about them may work!

      @CareOffBook  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I haven’t even thought about the script using a “gay” twist for shock value. You’re so right. I do wish that when the reprise Man’s Man was happening that the Prince used those lyrics when introducing the duke. “For I am a Man’s man.” It’s hard to describe it through text. 🤣 As far as Cinderella I believe she cares about what Sebastian thinks of her and the Stepmother puts it in her head that he would never choose her compared to others at the ball. I AM ALL FOR A STORY ABOUT THE QUEEN AND STEPMOTHER!!!!

    • @CareOffBook
      @CareOffBook  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes and no. The production itself is produced from his company that on the website says he wholly owns. So I do put more responsibility on him. Something I go back and forth with is wondering if he is hands on with the projects or he hires people and has no vision, so he lets them do whatever. 🤷🏼‍♀️

    Okay okay but like the thing we aren't all talking about the fatphobia in the transfer. We went from a mid/plus sized protagonist to someone who barely stands out. It was just another difference between Cinderella and the rest of Belleville. And like... they just got rid of it. But no one's talking about it.
    Costume changes. Yes. So much. But why aren't we addressing the elephant in the room. Especially in a show about beauty and self love.

    • @CareOffBook

      I guess I never really thought about it in that way. I saw it more as awkward that the show tries to convince the audience that Linedy wasn’t already the conventional beauty standard.

    Yes I agree with everything you said, but what you and a lot of reviewers seem to be doing is making out like everything wrong with the show is ALW . You mentioned how bad the book is ( and yes it is bad) but you never mentioned Emerald Fennell. You mentioned the costumes but never mentioned Gabriela Tylesova. I'm also surprised you never spoke how awful the lyrics are by David Zippel - i personally found them Laughable at times. When i first saw the pro shot of Bad Cinderella my first thought was to see who choreographed it as, like you said she's conforming with the towns folk which goes against everything she is. I didnt say "oh God ALW got it wrong" i blame the choreographer or even the director. I know his name is the biggest out of all the above mentioned but he is still only a part, granted a big part, of the show not the whole thing. So to keep blaming, or only using his name to blame for the failings of this show seems a bit mean spirited and dare I say lazy.

    • @CareOffBook
      @CareOffBook  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I can’t speak for others, but the reason I didn’t fully go into the choreographer and costumer for the broadway production is because I was focused on the 35 second pro-shot. I would like to see more in order to share an opinion on someone’s work. As far as Zippel, you’re right, the line “I want to be hot” continues to make me laugh. I want to hear the broadway soundtrack to see if there’s changes to the lyrics. I don’t know if this show is trying to go for “the producers” effect. 🤣 In my opinion, I do place a lot of responsibility on ALW because he is the creative director. Everything presented had to be approved by ALW.

    • @paulskinner7245
      @paulskinner7245 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CareOffBook yes I get that. Tell you what does make me laugh the one thing people don't mention his name with much is the music lol. The music tries to be "pop" "six" etc but it's just too Lloyd Webber. I do Want to point out even though I'm not a fan of this show, he did compose my favourite musical, Sunset Blvd.

      ALW is the power behind the show. He would approve everything or say something needs to be changed. I think he’s stubborn or has a team of “yes” people. There seems to be major holes in the book. Fix that so the show makes sense? Plus, the title. She’s “bad” because she doesn’t conform to society’s norms? Seems a poor choice. I think ALW wants a big hit, wants to be contemporary like Hamilton, etc, plus figures fantasy type shows have staying power (Wicked, all of the Disney shows, Moulin Rouge). All of those shows have solid plots, which are resolved at show’s end.

  • @DDTC73
    @DDTC73 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    ALW didn't actually say the show was a costly mistake, he was referring to the shows opening and closing and reopenings. If they had held off opening the show till a few months down the line, it would have been much easier and cheaper, because they wouldnt had to stop and start. Also, what you talked about doesn't really seem to be ALW's fault. He didn't write the book and he didn't direct it. What the show needed from the start was a director who knew how to stage and shape a new musical. To be able to say to ALW, this isn't working, how about we try this, or maybe do some rewrites during previews. Yes they did make a few, but nothing you would really notice.Laurence Connor only restage someone else's work (Les Mis/Miss Saigon) As for the costumes now looking the same, again, not ALW. If you want to bash the show and find fault, at least blame the right people.

    • @CareOffBook
      @CareOffBook  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do have an opinion about “costly mistake” remark. Future video coming up reacting to an article and they bring this up. I do place a lot of responsibility on ALW because he has final say on these departments. If Beyonce did a music video and the look was off, the story wasn’t great, and the song just wasn’t it. The community looks to Beyoncé instead of the stylist, videographer, and song writer because Beyonce’ has the right to say “this isn’t working.” That’s just my perspective.

    • @DDTC73
      @DDTC73 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CareOffBook But ALW didn't produce the show. It was done by his company, RUG, who had a specific team to produce and manage Cinderella. Just because his name was above the title doesnt mean that he had final say on every department. You don't hire professionals at that level to do a job and then go round micromanaging everything to within an inch of it's life. All the departments come together towards a central goal and put their best work forward. If some of it doesn't work, it doesn't work, but that doesn't mean ALW is to blame. Of course, thats not to say that ALW didn't give his opinion anyway, wanted or not, but thats not having the final say.

    • @CareOffBook
      @CareOffBook  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DDTC73 do you feel ALW shouldn’t take any responsibility or just some since there were others involved? I’m not asking in a condescending matter I genuinely would like to know.

    • @DDTC73
      @DDTC73 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Performance Perspective Of course he has to take some responsibility, he wrote the music for it and some of that music is terrible. I also think alot of David Zppel's lyrics are atrocious and i find it hard to get my head around how the same guy who wrote the witty, sharp and clever lyrics to City of Angels, is the same guy who wrote this. So by your book, you believe ALW is ultimately responsible for those bad lyrics, because he has final say?
