New instruction video for fitting our electric starter conversion for Norton Commandos. We've been busy. Thanks to our customers, colleagues and everyone who helped with the new video and installation booklet. :-)
Every Norton I build starts first kick everytime or it needs tuning, with electric start people ride out of tune Nortons. This Alton is the best of them all ,good set up. 50 yr pro. -Sundquist Norton. -youtube 2019
We're on the same page. The Alton starter systems should not be considered in anyway as a cure to badly tuned Norton engines. Perish the thought. On the contrary we warmly recommend to kit purchasers to get their engines fixed and well tuned firstly. The kits are done to make easy and confortable starting, no more no less.
Nice E-start conversion. I hope the written instructions talk about torquing the clutch center nut, installing its tab washer and also torquing the crankshaft nut. There was also no mention of a battery hold down strap or a fuse for the starter circuit which is important in the event of welding of the starter relay contacts. I also wasn’t impressed with the alternator wires just dangling inside the primary chain case. If it were my bike I would add a small clip to hold the wires from shaking and fatiguing or getting nipped by the chain. These are simple points but overall I think the Alton is a great and much needed upgrade modification. Also the bike in the video is a beautiful and rare machine.
Thank you for your support. Written instruction can be download from our website www.alton-france.com/downloads/ FYI : the copper wires are not encapsulated (like original Lucas stators or replicas) but the coils are retained by epoxy-glass clips and the entire stator is epoxy coated in heat chamber.
They are indeed when you are at full fitness.....unfortunately sports injuries and age does happen....better to convert to Estart than ride some poxy Virago :)
How to adjust the ignition, there is no mark in the alternator magnet and it too far away(deep) .... Either points or "micro-digital"-electric ignition is a must, as the cheapest analog ones gives more advance if the voltage drops 11v or so > the engine gigs back and destroy the starter!! The central stud need to be shimmed or shortened to get same level with crankcase... and the alternator wires are not oil-resistance...just to mention fiew...
Our electric starter kits for MK2 Commandos were originally designed for genuine primary drives with chains. We have no specific e-starter kits for belt drive systems but it is possible to adapt in most of cases. It is necessary to check and in most of times to adapt the Alton spacer in order to fit the One-Way-Clutch on the crankshaft properly. This can vary depending on the model of toothed belt primary drive fitted on the bike. You may know that there is 1/2 dozen of makers of toothed belt primary drives on the market who supply different models of drive kits years along, no talking of the modifications done by owners. Instructions about toothed belt drives is on page 14. www.alton-france.com/downloads/ Feel free to reach us www.alton-france.com/contact/
wouldn't waste your money, put one on now taken it off.Sent email to Alton regards a couple of parts no reply, should of twigged when dealer said he wasn't stocking them anymore.

It helps to have the proper tools and strictly follow the written instructions. The videos are helpful too. A factory workshop manual or similar is a must. This starter shouldn’t be installed in a hurry. If the owner is not so mechanically inclined seek the assistance of somebody who is.
Got the Alton fitted last week to my 74 mk2a. Ace classics did a great job.
Due to a ankle injury money well spent, highly recommended .

I did this last season, works great. Just be sure your bike is in good tune or you’ll shred those plastic bushings in no time.
Excellent! Congratulations!

can we use this for a norton dominator ?
Great job !
video molto bello e interessante
The 'background music' gave me a headache !
Yep, me too, it's very distracting!

It's quite a different story when you are actually undoing and doing up these bolts, with proper value torques.
Easy to kick start when you keep them tuned.......

Besides being a big help for the elderly or those with bad knees the electric start is good to have if the bike stalls or stops in traffic.

Great that you used a tiny screwdriver on the oil filler cap. They were designed for large coins, or thin spanner ends or whatever. Narf.
The round end of a large crescent wrench works well for the primary cover inspection caps. Or buy the Norton tool.
Would that kit work with a belt drive conversion ?

Is that amount of slack in the primary chain OK?
Looks like way too much slack.
The video is good but the written instructions are not very legible. It is good to see the Norton still going strong and with electric starting.
