    the flathead v8 was an amazing engine, it’s so cool going back in time with these cars

    • @josephg41
      @josephg41 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Although the Flathead was in the history books at Ford by 1954, the Y-Block replaced it in 1954.

    • @kooldoozer
      @kooldoozer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The flathead Ford v-8 was a miserable design. The exhaust ports go through the block, between the cylinders and in the cooling jackets assured they ALL overheated when run hard. And a nightmare to cast with that kind of port work. Early production saw 85% scrap rate from the foundry. The flathead Cadillac with the intake and exhaust ports both on top was a much better design, must easier to cast, and ran cooler. The flatford Ford v-8 was a terrible engine.

    • @josephg41
      @josephg41 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@kooldoozer In 1932 it was actually revolutionary, and yes those heating issues are a known problem, but then again all cars ran a little hotter back then more they do now. And NOBODY else made a V8 for as cheap as Ford did until a long time later, and the Flathead was a performance icon of it's day. Hot rodders in the 50's loved it, and quite frankly hot rodding as we know it would be completely different without the good old cheap flathead. And of course Cadillac made a better V8 at the time, if you pay more you should get more! Sure, it's got issues, but all things considered it was a great motor.

    • @chuckthebull
      @chuckthebull 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kooldoozer it was maybe not the greatest engine but it's appeal especially for hot rodders who modded them for more power it was a great engine..there are people who are getting 300 horse out of them. lots of after market add one's helped.
      And they sound great...yeah the low compression and porting was not ideal but it ended up being an iconic engine and personally I love them..indeed the Cadillac has it over the ford but there is just something about that ford Flathead that still keeps people interested..and these days it's a lot easier to find one and the cost is relatively small comparative to a caddies.

    I'd gladly pay $1800 for a new 1954 Ford pickup truck, very reasonable compared to the $35,000 Ford Ranger for 2021.

      My dad paid $2400 for a new 1967 3/4 ton 2wd , 4 spd , 352 ci . It replaced the 48 F1 in the garage . Sure miss the F1 .

    • @ExperiencesAndEquipment
      @ExperiencesAndEquipment 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      $1,800 in 1954 is comparable to about $18,000 today. Pretty sure the new ranger would outshine the 54 Ford in every way except style and simplicity.

    • @TripReviews
      @TripReviews 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      William Heuer so then you are making quite a statement with the dollar comparison. New cars and tricks are way overpriced these days and it really is a wonder when compared to 1954 how anyone can really afford a new vehicle. I wonder sometimes if all th technology was thrown out and cars were made just as simple as the 1950’s how prices would be?

    • @ExperiencesAndEquipment
      @ExperiencesAndEquipment 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TripReviews the problem is that there is no real comparison. Remove EFI which brings reliability, power, and fuel efficiency. Remove radial tires and reduce top speed, balancing and longevity. Remove the safety systems like a 3 point harness, crumple zones, and air bags and watch a small crash turn fatal.
      This is coming from someone who daily drives an 01 f250 work truck with AC as the only luxury option and has a project 06 wrangler without AC. My f250 would be so much better with power windows, and cruise control would be really nice.
      I absolutely hate touch screens in cars, I've seen climate control systems on them freeze up because it never got above -5 Fahrenheit for over a week and there was no way to get it to work without a heated garage. However, stuff like an infotainment system is basically a requirement for people now that they're used to it. Try to get rid of a your cell phone for a week and deal with a land line and a desktop computer only.
