    How to knit stripes in textured fabric without getting blips of color.
    This video explains why blips of color interrupt the transition from one color to another, when working with textured fabrics like ribbing and garter stitch. In addition, the video demonstrates how to control which side of the fabric the blips appear on, and how to take advantage of this characteristic to use it as a design feature.
    To jump to a specific point in the video, click on the adjacent link:
    When do color blips appear: 0:16
    Three parts of a stitch/blips in purl bumps: 1:28
    Changing colors in knits vs purls: 2:28
    Changing colors when switching from ribbing to stockinette (no blips): 3:25
    Changing colors when switching from stockinette to ribbing (with blips) 4:31
    Stockinette to ribbing color change without color blips: 5:25
    Stripes in ribbing without color blips: 6:19
    Controlling color blips in garter stitch: 8:36
    Reversible blanket with stripes in knit garter and purl garter: 11:24
    Shawl with RS garter stripes: 12:22

      Pauline, I would suggest that you join Ravelry.com. There is a large database of patterns of all sorts. You can search for patterns based on the yarn weight you would like to use, whether the patterns have color work or cables, as well as many other attributes. Many of the patterns are downloadable right from Ravelry (some are free, some cost money). In addition to finding patterns, there are also forums where you can get help on specific patterns, if you have questions.

I really like all these small things you can find on youtube. You are just making a cap because you don't want a scarf as a beginner and you look like a pro. Because you saw close the round this way video and make jogless jog that way and so on.

    Thank you, great video. I was wondering about color jogs with self-striping yarn worked in the round. Is there a way to fix those?

    • @RoxanneRichardson
      @RoxanneRichardson  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Typically, the place where the color changes is different for each color, so there's no obvious vertical line of jogs, which means the changes aren't as noticeable when you work in stockinette. If you're working texture while working in self-striping yarn, I think you're out of luck, unless you micro manage the color changes by cutting bits out, but that defeats the purpose of using self-striping yarns. Some yarns aren't a good match for some projects, if you're looking for a specific result.

    I am getting ready to cast on a lap throw for a friend getting ready to go through chemo. I am planning on stash busting and using the bright colors. Would it look ok to work the color changes from opposite sides so that the blips work as part of the design or would that be too "busy" looking? I love your videos . If I add 1 row knit/purl then I’ll end up with multiple ends to weave in; won’t end up on same start/end point consistently...is there an easier way to get the same result without the extra tails to deal with? Much thanks!!!...and of course, happy knitting 🧶💝

    • @RoxanneRichardson
      @RoxanneRichardson  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're knitting on a circular needle, slide the sts to the other end of the circ and pick up the working yarn of the color you want to use where it's hanging. e.g Row 1 (RS) k1p1 in color A. Row 2 (WS) k1p1 in color B. Row 3 (RS) knit color B; Rows 4&5 rib in color B. Do not turn work. Slide sts to end where color A is hanging. Work a RS knit row in color A, then work 2 rows in rib. Color B will be waiting at that end, but you will have to do a WS purl row for that color change.

    • @miniaturehome

    • @RoxanneRichardson

      The point is that if you change color while simultaneously working RS purls (which are worked as knits on the WS, when working flat) will cause blips. If you're not working purls while knitting in the round, you won't get blips.

  • @bigmood4404
    @bigmood4404 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    If I was attaching a double brim and I wanted the main part of the hat in a different color, would I change color when I'm knitting the brim together or would I change color on the next row?

    • @RoxanneRichardson
      @RoxanneRichardson  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can do either. From the RS, you are knitting, so either color will look fine. from the WS, you're going to have blips at the color change, whether you change the color while you are joining or when you are working the next round, because the join will present as purl bumps on the WS.

  • @Emmiix281
    @Emmiix281 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ok, if I understood,
    When I want to make stripes on the right side and with purl stitch, I need to knit it before ?
    So the row before purl will be knit, and the next will be purl to don't have the famous color blibs ?
    Thank's for your video and have a nice day :)
    Sorry, I'm french and my English is not really good :/

    • @RoxanneRichardson
      @RoxanneRichardson  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the RS is purls for the entire piece, working a RS knit row in the new color might disrupt the flow of the fabric, even though the stripes look fine. I suggest knitting a small swatch and trying it out to see how you like the result.

  • @wulfcwen
    @wulfcwen 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Question I am using a variegated yarn that knits up in colour blocks, I am using Garter stitch only and sometimes the new colour shows up a blip on the Front of the work (RS) row. Would I purl to avoid this from happening on the WS row?

    • @RoxanneRichardson
      @RoxanneRichardson  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're saying that when you're on a WS row, that the yarn color changes mid-row, which then causes blips on the RS? That's just like if you actually changed to a new color on the WS row. I wouldn't purl, because then you'd end up with not-garter stitch in those sections. Your choices are to live with the blips; or cut the yarn so that you can force the change to occur on a RS; or choose a different stitch pattern.

    • @wulfcwen
      @wulfcwen 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for such a quick reply. I have started the shawl and the colour changes are happening on both sides and the blips look part of the design so will not worry about them. I thought they would look messy but they don't.

  • @AnitaFranz-gn1dj
    @AnitaFranz-gn1dj ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Roxanne, Would the ribbing technic you demonstrated (to avoid blips) work while knitting in the round?

    • @RoxanneRichardson
      @RoxanneRichardson  ปีที่แล้ว

      The point is that at the color change the RS is worked as knits. When working flat, if you are on a WS row, you'd have to purl across to get RS knits. If you're on a RS row, you have to knit across. Therefore, if you are working in the round, with the RS *always* facing, you will knit across all the sts at the color change, just as if you were working flat on a RS row.

    I've searched high and low for an answer to the colour blips in ribbing even when joining on RS - you've finally answered it so thank you 🙌
    One question regarding picking up the ribbing pattern after you've just knit across. Do you skip one row of ribbing instruction (aka because you knit that row instead) or do you just carry on with the pattern as if you hadn't just knit a row and go straight onto the ribbing instruction you would have done?

    • @RoxanneRichardson
      @RoxanneRichardson  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would treat it as a row of ribbing. If your pattern is telling you to knit a certain number of rows or rounds for the ribbing, it's expecting a certain length to come out of it, however, you are allowed to modify that in any way that makes you happy and improves your result. But again, if it says to knit 16 rows/rnds of ribbing, then work 16 rnds, whether or not all of those rnds are actually ribbed.

    • @user-pl5gt7nt6g
      @user-pl5gt7nt6g 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for being so speedy to reply 🙂
      My pattern doesn't specify a number of rows. Its just that there are 2 alternating rows in the rib pattern (row 1: k1, p1, k1, p2; row 2:p3, k2) so do I treat the all knit row as a row 1 for example and go straight onto row 2 or do I still do the row 1 that follows on from the row 2 before the all knit row to keep consistency of alternation?
      Hopefully that makes sense

    • @RoxanneRichardson
      @RoxanneRichardson  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@user-pl5gt7nt6g You're going to need to swatch this out to see how it looks when you throw in a knit row. My instinct is to keep one of those as a RS row (let's say it's the row 1 patt), and in that case if you are changing colors on a RS row, you will substitute the all knit with the row 1 instructions, and then on the WS row, work the row 2 instructions. I recommend swatching this because I don't know how making that substitution will affect the interplay of the knits and purls in this particular situation. (I'd have to swatch it myself to see). Do the swatch over, say, 20 sts, and work enough row repeats in a solid color to see what it "should" look like, then work the same number of repeats with your color changes without making any changes to the stitch pattern, and then work the repeats a third time using this trick of avoiding the blips to see if you think it's an improvement or not.

      That scarf pattern is called Leftie by Martina Behm. It's on Ravelry.

    What is your style of knitting, continental?

    • @RoxanneRichardson
      @RoxanneRichardson  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. I hold the yarn in my left hand while I knit, so that, by definition, is Continental. There are lots of ways to knit with the yarn in the left hand, though. Many knitters hold their left index finger very close to the needle, while I extend mine away from the needle. How I position my index finger is dependent, in part, on how I hold the needles. Lots of ways to knit! :-)

    So the only way to do stripes without blips on either side of a scarf is to double knit?

      Or knit it in the round. If there is a purl bump showing, there will be a blip.

    An actual demonstration showing the steps while you knit or purl for each row during a color change for each of the 4 examples would be great for visual learners (like me). I kind of understand the idea of the different examples you made ahead of time to use in the video but I get confused as to the timing of the actual steps. Seeing you do it while you explain verbally would be very appreciated. Thank you for an informative video, but it's like listening to a lecture w/o watching the actual process that takes place.

      The point of the video was to demonstrate how to avoid color blips. The bit at the end about *using* the color blips was meant to be informational, not step-by-step instructional. At 15 minutes, I was pushing the length, as it was. The best way to understand how to use color blips (which I had never really spent any time pursuing prior to making this video) is to get out some yarn and needles, and try it. You'll learn a lot about how stitches interact with each other from row to row, as well as how that plays out when you change colors and stitch patterns.

    You are a great instructor but I am visual learner and I don't get this very well ... over my visual head!

      Knitting is a hands-on activity. Often, if you can't understand something by reading about it or watching it, you will get the visual information you need by actually doing it. Knit up a swatch, and watch what happens on your needles when you change colors.

      great suggestion, thanx I have made at least 6 king size blankets like this but I think I always changed yarns on the right side, no blips, and only did in garter or st st in round, so I am pretty sure it was controlled. Am I right? I gave them away as gifts so can't remember. Nevertheless thanx for reply, I will swatch but then will I remember what I did? Will have to swatch and make notes I think. Want to use up lots of stash so it will entail mid row changes, that's why I am interested.

      You can click on the settings gear at the bottom of the video window and slow down the playback, if it's too fast.
