  • My third full day on this repair I find out the original diagnosis is not correct. I have to dig deep into the transmission and to find a major failure. The car would slip in Drive but seem to drive fine in manual override. Watch the full video see the cause.

    wow quite a risk grinding inside the gearbox. the grinding disc has lots of abrasives in it. next time it ma be a good idea to use a hammer and chissel on the bolts. or an impact screwdriver. but cudos on taking on such a big project for a homegamer. cheers!

      I've found out that many owners don't understand the maintenance process and important things to be aware of when owning these machines. I've been fixing an xc90 d5, not myself, from a non start situation, shift flaring, faulty injectors, wiring issues, DTC unresolved issues... All related to carelessness. It's running today and still needs a few more oil flushes to get the transmission to respond better but after 1 flush, a tremendous change was noticed. Generally, if ppl maintened these machines as they should, youve got an awesome 2nd hand purchase.

    I have a 2003 volvo xc90. I went the store came out and the car would no longer move forward in drive. I put it in manual, 1st gear nothing, 2nd gear grabs a little, and in 3rd gear it moves forward. So I have been driving it in 3rd gear for a week. When I put in in manual I have to slam the gear shifter down hard to make it change over to manual to be able to shift to 3rd. Never had a problem before this. Trans never slipped or shifted hard. Every once in a while I would put it in drive and have to wiggle the gear shifter around before it would go forward. I think there maybe a problem with the gear shifter and that's the reason I have to slam it down into manual so it change to manual instead of automatic. If you have any ideas that could help me I would appreciate it very much. I'm at loss. I have just never seen a trans go out all of the sudden, usually it slips or shifts hard first. So any feedback would be awesome. Thanks

      I can't be certain but sadly that sounds like a broken clutch band to me. The band in this teardown would sometimes have enough grip to select gears occasionally.

    I have a B6294S motor S80 with 4T65EV transmission which fails.
    I found many used transmission in my local market, but they may different.
    Seller (1) has a B6304S motor S80 with 4T65E trasmission.
    Seller (2) has a B6294S motor S80 but with a 4T65EV-GT transmission. It is the same motor, but Geartronic transmission, mine is not.
    May any of these are compatible with my car?

      I could not be certain, but from experience from other vehicles swapping transmission is complicated by the PCM/ECU controller. The Car PCM must match the transmission motor combo

    • @barrabadgesAust

      Yes, I've done it to another XC90. You can removed the transmission cover if you drop the subframe a couple of inches on the left. It's tight and tricky but possible. You will need to remove drive shaft that side too.

    is it possible to get that valve body cover of while its still in the car? if not, if I loosen my trans mounts, motor mounts and push the engine over a smidge, do you think it possible it would allow that valve body cover to come of?

    • @barrabadgesAust
      @barrabadgesAust  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I have done this to my other XC90 when I fixed the shaft bearing in the cover. I was able to remove the cover by loosening the engine mounts. though it is still very tight.

    • @timmy2lives
      @timmy2lives 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for getting that answered so quick, I have noticed progressively worsening shifting, now it's gotten so bad it winds out, only getting p0773 incorrect gear ratio "3rd". Did a transmission flush,,, seemed to make it worse, but the previous fluid wasn't to thick, other than that all seemed good. Just horrible shifting

    Hello, have you come across, with a volvo transmission that wears the axels out or make them lose in a couple of months?
    (Cv axel, from transmission to wheel)
    I had that issue on a s40 2.4i front wheel drive, it just does it on the driver side.
    Transmission will make it clunk in a couple of months.
    I have tried oem axels they will last a bit more than aftermarket but they will have the same issue.

    • @barrabadgesAust
      @barrabadgesAust  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I found that the aftermarket CV axles are terrible. I can't imagine a trans fault is causing the wear. I really don't know why you'd be having short life in an OEM shaft

    • @humbertoperez7525
      @humbertoperez7525 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't know a lot about transmissions but a retaried mechanic told me that something wears out inside the transmission and instead of sending the torque to boht wheels the transmission just send the torque to one wheel (shaft) which according to the issue I'm having makes kind of sense
