I’ve been working on Volvos in America for many years, 240, 740, 940, S80, V70, SPA XC90 etc. you’ve done terrific work here for a job where Volvo would specify turning the car upside down and 20 special tools. I especially liked the control arm / ball joint spreader made of wood and a nylon strap, very ingenious! Best wishes from the USA. 🇺🇸😉
Nice work! Replaced the collar and angle gear on my P2 V70 a while ago. Same failure mode. It's a shame that volvo never addressed the issue on never platforms. It lasts just enough so most of the cars run out of warranty before it fails. Failure rate is close to 100% once you reach 100k miles. Mine statred making noise already at 60k miles.
I changed the angle box on a Freelander 2 , which is virtually identical. I used a similar idea to hold the control arm down, but went under the car, and jacked the wood upwards. It is a bit easier with the subframe off, and the exhaust removed. Its a job for a fit young person, and I am long past that now. No special tools needed if you are ingenious like Mr. Martin.
Much appreciation for this video! I am replacing my cat pipe (36002708) and the service manual procedure includes removing the bevel gear. Your video gave me the confidence to DIY. In my case the lower ball joint stud was completely frozen in the knuckle and your wood lever trick was not enough; I had to use a wedge-style knuckle spreader tool and shock the stud end with hammer and chisel while applying downforce on the control arm. For the upper 2 bolts on the bevel gear, a straight (not flex) 13mm box end ratchet works well. Removing that uninvolved bracket bolt from in between them (as you did) makes for clear, easy wrenching on that last deepest bolt. Just be resigned to doing it all by feel. 🙈 No way I would have made it through this job without your video. Thanks!
Thanks! Yes, as I mentioned, I had previously disassembled the ball joint a few months before. And it took a lot of persuasion to get it out. The wood lever is a simplified version of the Volvo special tool. But the special tool is not stronger and therefore probably only designed for cars under warranty. I am impressed that you got a knuckle spreader tool tool in that tight space.
I guess that oil and filter change isn´t in any normal service either? Just like the oil in the gearbox was filled "for life" in the P1 and P2 cars... My P3 V70 was serviced at Volvo until (around 170000km:s) all warrantee had expired and I was never once asked to do gearbox service... Flushed it myself at 175 000km:s, having no issues, now 225 000km, still no issues. Doing all services except cambelts on my 2002 and 2010 V70:s, around $250 for both with only high quality oil and parts...
If you like to keep yor car well maintained, you should have a look at changing the oil and cleaning the filter of the rear wheel clutch from Haldex. Great d.i.y. from a swede here : th-cam.com/video/CwbAtPPBs1g/w-d-xo.html
Sorry to hear that you also have this issue, let’s hope that you only nead to change the connection at time 31:29, and that it is not as stuck as mine was.
As the sleeve was stuck, probably due to metal chafings and grease that had corroded or just packed themselves. I just cleaned as much as possible. And I added some new grease. No heating needed to reinstall.
Did you realy drained gearbox oil becouse off angle gear? For xc90 data sheet shows angle gear has difrent oil, saparated from gearbox. In cast aloy has writen 5w40

On the V70R AWD:s they replaced the sleeve when it broke with the sturdier one from the XC90.
got any part number?

That D5244 Diesel sounds super healthy by the way 😉
How often do you change the oil and do you use 5w40?
The car tells me when it is time to do a service. Don’t stretch the intervalls.
I use Castrol Edge 0W-30 A5/B5. As this is recommended.
My 13 XC60 R Design has AWD issue unfortunately
Hopefully mines an easier fix

Thanks for the video. How did you managed to install the new sleeve? Vida calls for heating up to 150C. Did you just whack it in?

Bra Video!
Did you realy drained gearbox oil becouse off angle gear? For xc90 data sheet shows angle gear has difrent oil, saparated from gearbox. In cast aloy has writen 5w40
No, it is as you say, the gearbox and angle gear have seperate oil volumes. I do not remember the oil qualities.
Artikel nummer;
30651380 drive shaft seal
9143911 sealing ring
Loved your work.. the music sucks!
So I’ve been told. 😂 leasons learned for next time!

This is the original installation. What do you mean has been changed?
