@@kevinskinner4986 I know I’m simply racking my brain for a way to poke fun at the unfortunate coincidence that in inverse battles Bug ends up becoming a much more formidable type where ghost one the more type becomes its weakness
The funniest thing about inverse battles is that Smogon had a Showdown mode where you could fight with Inverse rules, and Dialga's normally amazing defensive typing was so bad that it dropped to OU.
Imbalanced as it might be, I really wish inverse hadn't been limited to just one random trainer. I would have liked to see it as one of the options at the Battle Maison, and would still like to see it show up again in some future battle facility mode where I could build teams to test out against a string of different opponents.
Would be dope if there was some story involving the Distortion World, Ultra Space, or some other sorta mixed up backwards place where this was just how it worked, though it might be too difficult and confusing for the normal story mode (unless it’s in a game that specifically is meant to be harder than the main ones like Legends Arceus is). Lots of cool, clever, interesting things they could use it for that even add depth to how the Pokémon world works (the Distortion World being all backwards like that would make a lot of sense tbh)
I think the best way to make that competitive friendly is if it only affected like 1 or 2 turns after it is initiated.. that would be a good way to shake up the competitive scene 😅
This video was really hard to wrap my brain around lmao. I think the inverse battles were cool in the "this is completely not even remotely balanced" kind of way. I think a Gym with this format would be really fun, but considering we only have (iirc) TWO Double Battle Gyms and zero Triple/Rotation, I'm not exactly going to hold my breath.
That would be a great way to branch Gym Leaders off a bit from the norm. Raihan's gym in Sword/Shield was more weather themed than Dragon themed, so branching off more into a strictly doubles gym (regardless of type), inverse gym, or even a stone evolution gym could be cool.
@@shepskydad I never got as far as Raihan, so knowing he's a weather specialist is really cool! I've always wanted more unique Gyms, it's why part of me kinda likes Diamond/Pearl's Move Type Gyms. I think a compromise could be having Gyms be the regular Type specialist Singles, and then the E4 be things like weather, inverse, Doubles, etc. because they're more experienced trainers who go for "unusual" strategies. I just doubt Gamefreak will ever break away from the mould that much.
did they really add only 1 more double battle gym after 6 gens since tate and liza lol (that being said, technically all of hoenn has double battle gyms if you count rematches)
You know if you think about it, there's a completely different direction they could've potentially taken the inverse battle idea. Instead of making not very effective hits super effective and vise versa, they could've reversed individual match-ups between types. This would be the same in many ways (grass still beats fire which beats water), but it would maintain and flip all immunities, so suddenly it's ground types that can't touch electric, and are likewise are immune to flying types. Ice becomes a nightmare to deal with as the only type to resist it is itself, and steel becomes even worse offensively than it already was as it's now resisted by 11 other types. Then if you wanted to make things _even more confusing,_ you could do both of these at the same time for a reverse inverse battle. Might seem normal at first now that flipped match-ups are flipped again, until you realize that Steel type is now more broken than it's ever been, because every type it used to resist it can now hit super effectively.
If someone hasn't already, we need this as a mod for chalenge youtubers. I would love to do this and relive my childhood of learning the type chart all over again
I thought I saw someone make a video about inverse battles in oras as a nuzlocke but I don’t remember. It seems like it would be hard to make something that makes inverse battles but Pokémon fans are making a lot of new ways to play the games and the universal Pokémon randomizer is already an insane tool with a lot of potential
It would be super cool if they gave us a gym with inverse battles in the next gen. Imagine being all like "next gym is the ___ type gym, good thing I have a few ___ types on my team to counter it" only to walk in and be caught off guard by the type chart being flipped in that gym. I'd reckon it'd probably be a midgame-ish gym though (maybe like the 4th or 5th?), just to throw things for a bit of a loop while not being all too mind boggling
Good Video, just a few pointers. Inverse actually returned briefly as a special format in Gen 7 Battle Spot, the hub where you do random wifi battles with players competitvely. Because most Pokemon resist more than they are weak too, Inverse is very hyperoffense meta, with some powerful attackers like Porygon-Z, Latios, and even Ninjask being popular offensive threats. That's not to say defense has no place inverse, however. As Ice is an amazing Defensive type, Chansey + Avalugg form a formidable defensive core. Some examples of Pokemon that go from Zero to Hero include Porygon-Z and Regidrago. Because Normal has 0 resistances, that means Porygon-Z can run a scarf or specs set with only one attacking move, Tri Attack, with the remaining moves being Nasty Plot , Trick, and Recover; allowing Porygon-Z to be an offensive and defensive terror. Regidrago is the same: Normally Regidrago is held back by a lack of coverage for Fairy, but with now with only one resistance, Regidrago can easily run a Substitute Dragon Dance set with Outrage and Draco Meteor for the remaining move, since you only need one attacking move since's Dragon's Maw is effectively an Adaptability for Dragon Moves. Dragon + another type is excellent in Inverse; Notably, Dragon/Grass, Dragon/Normal, Dragon/Fire, and Dragon/Electric is unresisted not counting ability immunity. Both Regidrago and Porygon-Z were banned in Inverse due too being too difficult to handle defensively. Ability immunity remaines the same, so Volt Absorb Jolteon and Sap Sipper Goodra are immune to Electric and Grass respectively. Types that were originally immune to certain status and field effects remain that way, like Electric to paraylsis and Ghost to trapping. Lastly, Smogon has an inverse battle thread: www.smogon.com/forums/threads/inverse.3711013/#:~:text=What%20is%20Inverse%3F,immunities%20become%20super%20effective%20hits.
Thanks for the info! I didn’t know that there was a smogon meta for inverse. I’m glad it’s a niche that’s still being enjoyed today :) It might be a goal for me to become #1 inverse player lol
Back when I was attempting to create a ROM hack before realizing I hated the tools, I wanted to have one of the gyms be comprised of inverse battles (yes it’s possible), with the leader himself wearing every article of clothing backwards and engaging in a double battle with a trick room team. Maybe the music would just be the normal gym theme played in reverse, and all the dialogue would be backwards.
the inverse type battles makes so few pokemon viable that it's... weirdly more balanced cause everyone is essentially more weak to everyone else. GF could make a move or a consumable item invert the matchup of incoming offensive moves, status effects, or defensive moves (an item for each kind of move, totaling three) for a limited number of turns.
Now I’m thinking about the idea of a Bug Type Elite Four who utilizes the inverse battle mechanic. Bug is usually super mediocre, but in inverse would be busted and really fun I think
I remember not too long ago that showdown implemented inverse battles as a special metagame of the month. I absolutely loved running amok with bug types in that format because bug is my favorite type. 😂

Choice Specs Boomburst Noivern would absolutely dominate. Especially in terastallization formats. Not even Shedinja is safe, as it becomes weak to Normal. What an incredible format that I want to at least try out
I'm really rooting for gamefreak to make a Pokemon 'Challenge Run' roguelite, where you can put modifiers on runs to earn more points or whatever. These could be like nuzlockes, solo runs, monotypes, but I think an inverse variant would be cool! I realise this request is already catered to with some awesome rom hacks, but it just feels like money left on the table for game freak not to capitalise on the absurd popularity of challenge runs
I remember there was an Inverse Battle tourney on Battle Spot once, it was pretty fun. I bred an Aurorus for it I named Surorua. It was the first and last time Aurorus has been good defensively lol
It would be SICK to see a gym leader (or even funnier an elite four member) with an inverted type gimmick. Definitely would be cooler than a lot of the gimmicks the gyms have in recent generations (gen 8 in particular). It would be a great way to catch players off guard and have to adapt to a new strategy on the fly.

The Inverse Type Chart should definitely come back as a casual format, easily accessible for mid-game players in a generation. It'll add another layer of thinking, making the meta pretty bad, shifting the usages of pokemon massively.
I remember finding that inverse trainer as a dumb kid who didn't understand the type chart very well and being absolutely confused and never going back in that house. But now I wish I could try it again it seems fun and interesting
Personally would love to see this again, I play showdown monotype regularly and I love both Grass and Bug type pokemon but playing them I sometimes feel very frustruated over the sheer amount of types that resist them. Especially bug type in this gen 9 meta, almost everything that is considered "good" resist bug to the extent that it feels unfair, Fairy, and Steel are represented in just about every team and to add insult to injury they're often dual types with ghost, fighting and flying that makes them quad resistant like Corviknight, Iron Valiant, Flutter Mane, Gholdengo and the list goes on and on.
@@haddy106 while it isn't universally true, as it's explained in the video that it doesn't mean any bad type combo gets better in the inverse chart, I can confirm Crustle is utterly shit

It's fun seeing how much this breaks the balancing. I had fun using defensive ice types on romhacks and the 3DS games. It's also quite funny looking at all the immunity/reduction abilities like lightningrod being even more useful.
Love you video! I'd like they went for a kind of Battle Facility that implemented this dynamic. Btw just a minor correction: Fire/Ground types do not have two 4x weaknesses (Just Water). The others not shown are Ghost/Psychic, Ice/Steel, the classic Rock/Ground 😼
It would be a nightmare to try to balance, but I'd be interested to see a move or ability someday that utilises the inverse type chart. Perhaps a distant cousin of Trick Room or Ion Deluge?
Imagine a trick-room esque move that instead of inverting the speed, inverts the type chart for 3 turns. The sheer implications of such a move existing on the meta would be so cool! I highly doubt many teams would run it since you can't exclusively turn it into an advantage for only you, but just imagine the chaos you could cause
I'm surprised they didn't just switch the immunities to the other foot. What I mean is, Dragon being immune to Fairy, for example. And since Ghost and Normal are immune to each other, this wouldn't change. But no, they're just gone for some reason.
Inverse was fun, but it definitely can't become a competitive format. It makes for a nice, challenging bonus though... great post-game/attle Frontier material. They really should bring it back, along Rotation and Triple (which absolutely should get wider use).
I'd like it to be a goofy battle format we could choose in online play. Or like a pokemon has an ability that lets its attacks work as if in an inverse battle. That would be sick and have limited reach so it wouldn't be overpowered. Just a mindmelt
What if game freak added an item/ability where if that Pokemon got hit, the inverse type chart got used for a few turns? See how much chaos it can cause in the meta
Or make it happen under otherwise incredibly niche circumstances, such as having a Pokémon with a Weakness Policy get hit by a physical attack by another Pokémon with Pickpocket while Magic Room and/or Gravity is in effect.
I'm surprised that GameFreak being the agent of chaos that it is didn't invent a move similar to trick room that inverts the typematchup chart. I could only imagine the saltiness in VGC if it existed.
This battle type should definitely be in the modern games. Not as any gym battles or anything major, but just as a custom mode for batting your friends, it'd be fun to mess around with and see what mons become hot garbage or really good
I think one of the most interesting ways to impliment something like this is an ability. 2 pokemon that are similar in lore or design and have different types, could get inverse type abilities. One for offense, one for defense. A type that isn't too good normally, like say, ice and normal, would become quite usable. With an "inverted defenses" when hit with a super effective, immune, or not effective move. While the other has this offensively, but I suppose the coding for this would be insanely tricky.
Top notch content you just made me actually appreciate a bit my plain Pokémon Y lol And want to play around in it more than just sweeping a Gen and experiencing the region (which is already praising too much lack luster Gen 6 if you don’t mention it introducing megas and having a large Pokédex with tons of older mons)
I feel like they COULD bring it back, but like, in a sort of Battle Facility sort of way? Like as an optional post-game thing in a dedicated area. Like Inver's hut but actually government-funded, you get what I'm saying? Also put a dude in the lobby who'll tell players their Pokemon's current weaknesses.
I'd love to see a move like trick room that inverts this, and i want it to be widely available, it'd mean that people have to radically change their gameplay, which would drastically shift how vgc plays

I wish they did more inverse battles. Or even had a battle tower gimmick with inverse battles
I would love for a trick-room type of move that temporarily inverts the type chart
They really need to bring this back in some form, it has enough depth to warrant it's own battle facility
Final Boss of Pokemon Insurgence haw this style of battling, with mons such as snorlax and aurorus. Amazing stuff
I really think pkmn showdown should add a Inverse type chart format, just for the Chaos
This is a cool idea
Parasect becomes an absolute menace in this case😰
I'm surprised they didn't just switch the immunities to the other foot. What I mean is, Dragon being immune to Fairy, for example. And since Ghost and Normal are immune to each other, this wouldn't change.
But no, they're just gone for some reason.
Too complicated to code? Or just laziness?
Inverse was fun, but it definitely can't become a competitive format. It makes for a nice, challenging bonus though... great post-game/attle Frontier material.
They really should bring it back, along Rotation and Triple (which absolutely should get wider use).
I'd like it to be a goofy battle format we could choose in online play. Or like a pokemon has an ability that lets its attacks work as if in an inverse battle. That would be sick and have limited reach so it wouldn't be overpowered. Just a mindmelt
Inverse battle where really fun because steel types finally become super easy to beat
They needed to be knocked down a peg
Great video. Would be fun to see a Smogon OM with this
There *is* a smogon OM with inverse battles. Even got it's own Viability Ranking and everything.
It shows that they simply forgot about the idea 😂
With Galvantula As My Favorite Pokemon Seeing The Fact That He Is Excellent At Having An Offense Typing In This Inverse Type Chart Mode Makes Me Happy
This battle type should definitely be in the modern games. Not as any gym battles or anything major, but just as a custom mode for batting your friends, it'd be fun to mess around with and see what mons become hot garbage or really good
I'd enjoy having a Trick Room style inverse effect.
4:58 Wow i finally have an actual reason to love galvantula other than the fact that's its a funny spooder
I made a custom Pokémon called Turnaround. It’s ability inverses the type chart!
Steel is a defensive type, ice is offensive
But In inverse battles they swap roles
Somebody needs to make a mod for the other games where this is the type chart
It would be interested to see a bug gym that uses inverse battles
The prevalence of Normal, Ice, and Psychic specifically gives big Gen 1 competitive energy to inverse battling
10:49 small correction, fire and ground does not belong on this list as it only has one 4x weakness
Oooh good eye! That was meant to be Rock/Ground lol
shoutout to poison types being in the bottom 3 types for both normal and inverse ^^
Top notch content you just made me actually appreciate a bit my plain Pokémon Y lol
And want to play around in it more than just sweeping a Gen and experiencing the region (which is already praising too much lack luster Gen 6 if you don’t mention it introducing megas and having a large Pokédex with tons of older mons)
Ngl I think this would be an Interesting Ladder on Showdown
I kinda feel like this needs to come back.
7:08 laughs in Aegislash alone dragging the type down making GF remove 2 resistances
Grass normally: *touches grookey* *and* *grookey dies* Grass with inverse type chart: *touches grookey* *and* *dies*
I want to see a nuzlock played with these rules
I'd love to see a move like trick room that inverts this, and i want it to be widely available, it'd mean that people have to radically change their gameplay, which would drastically shift how vgc plays
Ice in inverse battles: POWER! UNLIMITED POWER!
