In terms of exit opportunities, audit trumps tax - It is quite rare for VP, Finance, Corp Controllers and CFOs to have come from the tax stream or was a tax CA. Simply because tax is specialized but audit gives you the opportunities to review clients' work in different process areas including tax. The difference is in the exposure that you get on a day to day basis.
Over generalizing, Auditors tend to be jack of all trades, masters of none but tax CPAs tend to be specialists in niche areas of tax - like mining tax or SR&ED.

Hi Gabrielle! I’m a fresh grad and I’ve been offered a position in Global Mobility tax in one of the big four and a tax consultant assistant position in an oversea-headquartered company. It was a smaller firm and they specialised in helping Europe companies to deal with their tax issues in my home country. I was contemplating between the two because I felt the former might be too specialised (mainly personal income taxes) and might be hard for career transition in the future, but the offer was attractive because it was big4 after all 😬 May I ask what is ur view on this?

I would say to go for the job that you are most interested in and enjoy doing!

Was in the mobility tax team. I would suggest to go for the global mobility tax. For some reasons. First, the income tax situation will be more complex after the COVID (working remotely and internationally); so you have the job security for your future. Second, majority clients I worked are global 500 fortune companies or high net worth people; you can find a good exit opportunity later when you leave the public firm. Third, personally I feel my team is less competitive than other teams.

@@SL-mw1zl Hello! Your comment is one of the most explanatory ones I've seen so I'd REALLY appreciate if you could give me a little bit more insights.I have recently graduated and received an offer from a big4 as a global mobility/tax consultant but I never thought of doing this at all during my studies. I will be working with the personal income tax as I have been explained to (with high net worth clients in my country). However, I have always planned on working for marketing (esp. fashion industry). Do you think it'd be a smart move to accept the offer?

@@ilayda9067 Heya! First of all, congradulation! You got an offer on hand. Generally speaking, I don't feel much overlap between global mobility tax(GMT) and marketing/marketing research for job tasks perspective. That's been said that GMT probably won't be a good steping stone for a marketing role. (Well, if one of the client you served are in the fashion industry, you may get the ticket to get in there. )

Hi Gabrielle, can you speak to the salaries of a first year Senior Associate or a first year Manager in tax at Big4? Would this be different between the different tax lines? (tax vs m&a vs international for e.g.) Would the salaries also be different between Vancouver and Toronto in Canada for e.g.? Any rough numbers would be really helpful as glass door is quite inconsistent! Thanks
