That’s evocative , my dad took me to movies in the 70’s. Saw Zulu and The Man Who would be king in the same year, I was about 8. Left a lasting impression and they’re in my top 10. Spend a lot of the time thinking of my late dad while I’m watching them.
He was away on a training course when he watched outlaw josey wales, I was too young but he told me all about it.

Eastwood more than an actor, he is a wonderful director whose movies never get old, so I'm amazed by his capacity to continue making movies despite being a 90-years-old man. Regarding his films, my dad, who passed away, was a big fan of Eastwood's movies and especially, from The good the badt and the ugly. Let’s agree, to disagree…I’m in my 60’s, a film buff, with eclectic tastes, well beyond the Western genre. So there’s a multitude of greats I’d place well ahead of him, both men & women. Generally, I find many of his more famous films, entertainingly average, hardly Criterion, critically acclaimed or of any cinematic significance…Stagecoach is likely the only one I’d place in that category. And don’t get me started on his lack of range & real acting chops. He sold lotsa tickets, made the studios lotsa money & gained tons of fame…that’s NOT important to me.
Many actors & actresses have all kinds of iconic movies on their respective resumes. Based on that bias/limited statement, it’s likely safe to say you have a V E R Y limited scope & perspective when speaking of cinema. Let’s see…mostly action flicks; generally, with simple, cookie-cutter dialogue, all kinds of chase scenes, lotsa guns, explosions, fighting…

When the Dirty Harry series started I must have been one of the few 11-12 yr old girls begging to be taken to see it, which my older sisters made sure happened. One of them knew someone at the local theater and convinced them to give me one of the promo posters after it left the theater. I was fortunate to see The Good, the Bad and the Ugly at the theater at age 15 in 1968; we knew nothing of spaghetti westerns, and did wonder why so many names in the titles were Italian. Since then GBU has been my favorite film, and we saw all the other spaghetti westerns in theaters on first release in Arizona as well. So I definitely understand and agree with Tarantino and his homages to Eastwood, Leone, and Morricone.

Just remember that when you watch Fistful of Dollars ... and you watch that scene with the coffins... remember that was lifted completely, as was most of the rest of the movie, from Yojimbo by Akira Kurosawa.

Clint Eastwood made fun of his roles while he was presenting the Oscar substituting for Charlton Heston. He said they select a guy to fill in for Charlton that didn’t say 3 lines in his last 12 movies.

He meant that they replaced the actor (Charlton Heston) who played historical figures who did a lot of talking, specifically 'Moses' in "The Ten Commandments" and "Ben Hur", with an actor (Clint Eastwood) who hardly spoke in his movies, to deliver an Oscar presentation speech in front of thousands of people.

I have a lot of respect for Clint Eastwood; he obviously learned a lot from working with journeyman directors like Don Siegel. There was a story I sort of remember about the making of Bronco Billy. There was a scene where the characters are pulling up to a gas station with their car overheating. The prop people were using dry ice to make the “smoke,” and it wasn’t enough to be able to see, so they used more dry ice, and then it was too much. They were going to try again, but Clint said, “Forget it, we’re not making a movie about a car overheating.”

This is so true. Whenever I'm scanning Westerns on any streaming service, I see if there are any Clint Eastwood films. If there isn't any, I just move on. That's not to say there were still some great movies with Henry Ford, John Wayne, Robert Mitchum, Kurt Russel and Lee Van Cleef, but for some reason Clint just set the tone and is forever burned into the minds of Western movie lovers

Maybe a dumb, naive question: but Tarantino's point on "storytelling direction" and how most directors nowadays aren't good storytellers - what makes a director a good storyteller? Is the scene from 15:17 an example of bad storytelling, because the gelato isn't serving the larger story?
Again, maybe a bad question but just curious what separates good storytelling directors vs. bad storytellers.

    • @gothxm

    • @pietzsche
      @pietzsche ปีที่แล้ว +7

Obviously, I'm not Tarantino, so I'm guessing, but imo yes, you're right.
Good storytelling, and this goes for writers too imo, do a couple of things really well. It's not just that everything serves the story, but that everything serves more than one purpose.
Pulp Fiction contains one of the best examples of this I can think of, with the conversation about Tony Rocky Horror, with the "Every foot massage means something" bit.
When Vincent asks Mia about it she tells him the only time Tony ever touched her was when he shook her hand at the wedding, as tho this demonstrates the innocence of their contact. But the only time Vincent ever touches her, as far as she knows, is also when they shake hands.
Tarantino's not exactly famous for subtlety, but that's so subtle almost no one ever notices it, consciously at least. That's phenomenal storytelling, and Tarantino's films are full of that kind of thing.

That coffin thing is an exact copy of "Yojimbo" by Akira Kurosawa. The ronin played by Toshiro Mifune atacks the local mafia. When the ronin is going to atack them says to the coffin maker to prepare two coffins, and then he goes back and says "three coffins"

Since the subject of Tarantino and Eastwood has come up.
I'd love to ask Mr. Tarantino if he was channeling "Where Eagles Dare" when he did the tavern scene in "Inglorious Bastards"
Not ripping off in any way but thinking, "That's the level and type of tension I want for this scene.
Any event both our excellent movies, both worth watching.
