We hear a lot about electric cars sharing the same platform. All that means is that they share the same bits underneath - stuff like batteries and motors, as well as actual chassis - a trick which manufacturers use to cut costs and offer as much choice as possible. Take these two, for example. They’re non-identical twins, both from the VW Group.
On one side is the Volkswagen ID.3 58kWh Pro Performance. It starts at £35,835, and comes with a 58kWh battery, has just under 250-miles of WLTP range and 201bhp of power.
On the other side is Cupra Born. And it starts at £34,715, so a little bit cheaper, and also comes with 58kWh battery, just under 250-miles of WLTP range and 201bhp of power.
But which is the better buy? Join Tom as he compares the two and crunches the numbers. Do you agree with Wookie? Which would be your choice from these two? Let us know in the comments below.

We tried loads of different EV's ranging from £30k to £40k with the intention of knowing it'll take around a year to get a new car. The MG ZS felt like an old car, the Mokka-e was lovely and had a great spec but seat were uncomfortable, we had decided on an ID3 but the dealers near us were so useless we walked out. We were waiting for a sales advisor in Hyundai dealership and went for a walk stumbled across a SEAT showroom and first set our eyes on a Born. After some you tube research and a test drive we decided to order one.....someone had cancelled an order for the spec we wanted and within 2 weeks we had our new V2 Born with a few extras!!! We couldn't be happier that the VW dealer was so rubbish that we walked out of Parkways Leicester and found Marshall SEAT Leicester, thanks Sam @ SEAT!!

@@christianholmenfrost I own it, bought from Heritage Seat in Bristol, salesman was super helpful BTW. It is sooooo easy to drive, there are a few quirks, most of which i've now figured out. We live in South Wales but i work in Bristol so most of my miles have been done on the M4. I couldn't be more pleased overall. I got mine in June and at the time i could have chosen any model. I went for the V1 but paid extra to get the safety pack on it, which is definately worth the extra £560 (i think that's how much it cost). It's my first EV and in all honesty i didn't want to pay any more than i did with it being an unknown experience at the time. Even with electric going up, it's still a lot cheaper for me than using Diesel. Hope that helps!

Cupra better looking but the ID3 headlights are FANTASTIC. They aren’t available on the Cupra. All the motoring journalists mention the window switches but really they are not a problem at all. No one mentions how badly the rear gets dirty, it only takes seconds to get coated in crap worst car I’ve ever owned for that. Cupra Official website has a technical drop down page which sets out charging performance. For DC it should charge 5-80% in 35 minutes. Actually it took 50-55mins. Worse still it never even peaked at the rate it would need to average to achieve 35mins. The specification is not caveated. A courtesy Cupra did the same. I have detailed charge info but neither VW or retailer Listers solicitors have challenged the accuracy of the information. I have probably a lever arch of papers on the problems with this car which is similar to VW id3. VW Cupra website also doesn’t say that the battery safe mode will impact on AC charging performance. Rather it advertises cheap overnight charging and recommends Ohme and Octopus: I purchased both. If the AC charging depends on the battery safe mode then it should state that. It doesn’t. Indeed there is no explanation of battery safe mode and why/when and on what criteria it will be activated. So 75/80% of time it half charged overnight which means I could not get to work and back! Put simply I got rid and got an alternative EV which does the job!

Overpriced and the infotainment is still not where it should be. Android auto essentially means that these big manufacturers are lazy when it comes to this tech. Except tesla of course.
Both of these cars are too expensive for what u get and I agree the mg4 could be an absolute unicorn if they can deliver on production. 10k less and as much if not more car

I still dont understand the VW choice to have the temperature buttons being non-illuminated. Just doesn’t make any senate as VW interiors have always been really good with illumination. My father just picked an Enyaq over an ID4 due to (amongst other things) this; his eyes aren’t what they used to be in low-light conditions.

There just too similar inside, and the fact that you can’t get matrix lights on the cupra is a deal breaker for me ,the Id program has to go back to its car roots and stop with the shortcomings, on window switches, driver screens , it’s a sad day that a 3 year old e golf looks better, and vw should twitch that terrible infotainment unit at this stage maybe going android with added car play app maybe the better option and stop with haptic touch buttons especially for hvac and wheel

The VW ID.3 has better space at the back seat and a larger trunk plus Matrix lights (which is a clear advantage for driving in the dark), and also slightly better driving characteristics from what I have seen in the few tests that have been done so far of the MG4.

    you MUST BE JOKING....
these two do not share only platform... or, as you neatly said, "some bits underneath that you don't see".... they share practically EVERYTHING except the bumpers and lights!!! cars that share platform (as in "some bits underneath") are for instance Peugeot 3008 and Citroen C5X or, Opel Corsa and Citroen C4.... THESE TWO are downright REBADGE! because they share complete drivetrain, the dashboard (regardless of "coloured accents" and may be some of the materials) and the rear bench, they have identical side silhouette because all side pillars and windows are the same! and since the boot opening and hood cutt-outs also look identical it is safe to say that their body shells (except before mentioned lights and bumpers that res screwed on it) are practically identical ...
how can it be that THIS passes as "platform sharing" while new Astra is generally considered as "Peugeot 308 reskin"... PLEASE.!🤨😵‍💫

Seat is usually behind Skoda then VW in terms of build quality.
Skoda is not as well built as VW but uses similar parts. SKODA’s and Seats squeak and rattle a lot.
I would be worried that Cupra is cosmetically a better looking car but underneath is a poorer built car.

All Cupra Born models and a lot of VW iD.3s are built in the same factory in Zwickau (alongside Audi and SEAT EVs) so they will be equally as good. There's another iD.3 production facility in Hanover, but I doubt it'll be vastly better.

I have the ID3 and one pedal driving is not available in my view. I use the B mode most of the time. It works well, but will not bring the car to a complete stop. Which I believe is what "one pedal driving" means.
