The manual for GP2 was a proper booklet with serious technical information about how to set up your car. I remember reading that stuff when I was a kid. I also remember this was like the second game I bought with my own money, the first being Transport Tycoon.0 I used to be very good in GP2 at Monaco in particular, like I was able to get lap records there. Hungary too, basically any track that had lots of slow corners. In the modern F1 games it is really much different, Monaco is basically my weakest track followed by Singapore while I am a proper deity on tracks that are way more flowy like Zandvoort. I don't know why this is, probably lost the accuracy while gaining an understanding of how to pull through corners with speed.

I do miss how buying a video game used to be like an event in your life. But ok I still get my fix when I buy board games or like a nice new LEGO set.

Toca Race Driver can be a masochistic dream in general, like pivotal steering or maniacal AI opponents, although Toca Race Driver was all Aus and NZ had to play a V8 Supercar video game back in the day and playing that and drinking Red Bull was quite a recipe for Adrenaline though, I'm thankful to still have it on my actual PS2 unit, anyway that's my nostalgia, I never really followed F1 so forgive me, I was always a V8 Supercar, DTM and NASCAR type. You definitely make this a series, cheers!
@@happilyaverageracerOh believe me mate, most racing games "died" (and poor Codemasters, and I say died to an extent) when EA decided fun is over and EA is like the FIA of gaming at this point (although at least EA won't charge you for swearing under intense adrenaline XD) That's why I've stuck with the PS2 games, my first simulator was Rfactor, I heard of it from a mate following up to the 2007 Bathurst, said there was a 2006 Bathurst mod from OSRM, I never knew what a simulator was at the time though, but then he showed his setup, it was an old school G25 I believe, I was so unfamiliar with it, but the more I got used it to it I just exploded with childlike joy, I played it for years but then I learnt of Assetto Corsa and here I am today, so that's my story behind it. Magic. I am about the same age as you, and like you worked my way through the Crammond series starting at GP1. GP2 was always, for me, the best of the lot. Spent about five years racing it, modding it, taking part in the formative sim racing leagues like GP3GL and LFRS by submitting race logs... so many good memories! Sim racing is in a good place now, but it's so much fun to see good ol' GP2 getting some love from people like us who were there at the time and new audiences alike right now with this mod.
The new update is amazing with the tire decals and brake ducts. I hope eventually it will be possible to replace the external car tires with 3D ones instead of sprites, that would help a great deal with the visuals.
absolute game changer in 1996. I actually had a proper steering wheel setup (not to modern standards of course) and mastered the game. unfortunately we didn´t have pro racing game communities back then.
There are some very good setups to find on the internet that you can use as a baseline for each track. Pointy car works in this game very well, you get enough rotation and you can go pretty low on the back wing. Hope you have a centering spring on your wheel that you can enable outside of the game, it's much easier to drive
first game ever bought for me. right in the middle of the greatest racing years too. even with only 4 colours on each car i still knew exactly who and what i was passing. *edit* - sorry, Grand Prix 1 was the first game bought me. GP2 was great but i guess the original refresh rate maybe i dont know how to explain it, but it wasnt smooth like youve got it here, this is great.
I wish they would have the other games also but don’t forget Indy car racing 2! They recently made an amazing overhaul for graphics but it still uses dos box and doesn’t detect my equipment at all
@@happilyaverageracer I had the Indycar game too and the bloody thing wouldn't run when you didn't connect a Joystick to the computer (despite being playable with keyboard). Good times
Great stuff! But I can't install it from my original GP2 game-CD as Windows 10 denies the installation process! How did you get YOUR installation done on Windows?
I just downloaded a copy at the link in the description then downloaded the mod by Hatcher, opened the config file within that and made sure the install path was changed to where is just installed gp2 to (for me D:/GP2). Literally took all of 5 mins👌
Do you know how to set gamepad controller? My Logitech F310 is recognized but the buttons assignment is not correct, currently I can turn the steer left/right, but the car is accelerating and braking at the same time
same with my wheel and pedals, I guess it's a bug that's independent of what input sevice you're using with a bit of binding and unbinding I can get it to work sometimes, but not reliably but hey, it's still an alpha version
@@happilyaverageracer finally managed to separate the axis using that not obvious axis finder menu, but now another problem emerged, the steering is way too sensitive, and oddly enough, I receive constant OCCUPANCY WARNING message on screen, which never happen if I use DosBox-X to play GP2
Im ridiculously faster with the keyboard than with the steering wheel in this game, i have a xbox controller but it is just too twitchy to play with it
Im trying different angles to find a solution. When i run this program i get " Failed to open file: 's:\gp2\gp2\f1gstate.sav' ERROR: 2" . I can then continue into the game menu, but when i try to quickrace, i get "Trackfile not found!" and then it crashes. I have a fresh US version install. Oh i see you have a different download offer, let me try that. Edit: That one does not work. It gives "Error: Wrong GP2 version!" Do you use the same version as the download link?
Probably not a complete solution, but I had it crashing on track load too. I just copied the 'circuits' folder across and it solved that particular problem, for me at least.

The booklets we used to get with games were another element that made them more special and the GP2 manual ,as you say , was exceptional!!

Agree, GP2 was the highlight of the series for me. Love the passion of modders to keep this abandonware stuff alive for us to enjoy!

This new mod for GP2 inspires me to actually give GP2 a go, I was born way after the GP games except GP4, since now its able to be run natively

Yeah the original game was locked to 25fps as the physics were somehow tied to that frame rate

Version shouldn't matter and yes driver aids are turned on and off with the function keys

Did you try the Axis Finder in the controller settings? May help to work out which things to bind🤷
@ yeah, it also shows the correct raw input in the input overlay but x86gp2 doesn't translate those raw inputs correctly, at least not always

@TwoThreeFour steering ratio can be adjusted in the menu too, may need a tweak there
Not 900 degrees (but for most "standard" cars) but yes 380~400 for real F1 cars. 🙂
I only set it at 900 to match my real wheel, was too off-putting visually with the default 270 degrees
I did adjust the steering ratio though in the controller menu
