Great video, my dude! I like the Jensen the best. I'm going to have to look into that more. Thanks for the tip. And yes, bass IRs would be awesome. We bass players are treated like red-headed stepchildren (looking at you, Fricker ;). By the way Kohle, the album's was released last week: th-cam.com/video/5ufPO5_M0PU/w-d-xo.html
That Jensen Punch has a lot of....punch. Love it. And now I know why I can't find/buy a replacement Ampeg speaker. Sadly I have 1 with a dented cone on my 6x10. Free IRs or $30 range? Hmm?
Warren - Please demo you Vox IR's from Lancaster. Shit, please demo your entire producer pack. I'm super curious about the winterland, Vox cabs, and the greenbacks. Trying to migrate away from V30's.
Hey, Ignazio Vagnone from Jensen Speakers here. Kristian, awesome video, dangle all the way :) cool to hear how much the Jensen Punch is coming up really nice in the mix! About the Smooth speaker, I agree it may be too "clean" for that setup. It is, as you mentioned, really thought and voiced for a different thing: the name does not refer to the "tone" but rather to the frequency response curve, that is (doh...) more linear and, yes, smoothed, while the Punch is "voiced" to a specific rock tone. The Smooth works great in modern "2-way" arrangement, where the horn comes in to take care of trebles, and the woofer top end is custom tailored tp taste by the crossover. Thanks for testing our stuff!
Hey man! Thanks for chiming in! Great to get a direct feedback from Jensen! It makes sense that the Smooth works a lot better in a true 2-way system. And I already said, it does not feel like it was voiced for metal bass tones anyway. But the important thing is how cool the Punch sounds! That thing is made for metal. 🍺❤️
Jensen speakers are mistakenly used for just blues but they hold up under high gain. Simply put, that dangle is underrated. The smooth oddly mixes with that kick drum too!
New Trace Elliot is really Ashdown, which can also be found used for cheap but only get the ABM range. The real gold with TE are using the matching cabinets. The classic 410s are two sealed 210s in one cab, like the classic Ampeg design but they weigh a ton. Bass players get hit with the box of shame unless the soundman takes the DI off the back of the amp, neither normally have an IR unless using something specific like a Darkglass pedal. Outside of the studio bass speaker cabinets are mostly just big monitors as almost every soundman will take a DI
Do a 15" :) maybe after you through that and / or test 12", do a mix of 10"/12" and 15" or some interesting combo, there's bunch of fun sounds out there. Thanks for the bass videos!
When played by itself I liked the Eminence best, but in the mix the Jensen really catched my attention. Great video Kohle! Waiting for more bass content like this. Prosit!

They each sounded very resonant and each with it's own hollow (or maybe 'throaty' is more descriptive a word) signature dependent upon it's resonant placement...but less so with the Jensen 'Smooth' which had less signature resonance and more balanced across the lower mid to bass band and no growl in the low mid. They each mixed well into the music...except the Smooth, which disappeared. Gave me the comparison and insight to get the courage to change my old 1980's Fender Bassman cab speakers out (never was too happy with the sound, even though the old speakers are Eminence. But the cab came packaged with the amp I wanted). The newer Eminence BP102 made a huge difference and it now sounds better than I expected.
@@KohleAudioKult and seriously...thanks for all the effort and time you put into this! A video like this is exactly what is needed to make this kind of decision. I'm doing to build my own bass amp some day, this is very helpful. It's going to be a Marshall superbass/Ashdown EBM sort of amalgamation in style. Hybrid head with 2 inputs, 2 channels, a 5-band graphic EQ, Sub harmonic overtone control, FX-loop, D.I output and a massive 4x15 cab with (just now decided) Celestion pulse speakers. The whole thing will get traditional Fender/Marshall styling with the twist of a red grill just to change things up
These bass speaker videos are amazing! I feel like my bass sounds have not been up to my standards recently until I saw the last video where you used the SM7B on the speaker (used a md421) and horn(and beta sm57) and also a LDC (akg 414) on the other speaker. I did that technique on my last recording last week and WOW did that work good.
The ball venting track 😂 That Trace head is a champion!! The 4x10's they came with were also monstrous sounding. That Eminence speaker kicked. The Jensen, although not as forward sounding in the mix, was really cool too. I don't know about the Celestion though...Thanks, take care :)
This is actually THE most interesting video I've ever seen on youtube about this matter. Amazing analysis! As a proud owner of that same bass head (even if I don't ever use it, it has something wrong with the transformer I guess and it always has an annoying loud buzz going on, it has to be checked by someone who knows what to do) I can't wait to experiment to get that growling sound. The goal is simple: getting that dangle even with fingers XD I know, I know, almost impossible, but that's how I play bass! Can't wait for your next video Kohle, cheers from Italy!
The Smooth sounded better in the mix than by itself. Sounded like the Eminence was a little more vocal and clear than the others, the Punch was a close second and had some nice overtones. The Celestion plain doesn't work for the application. Very cool video! Excellent demo as always!
I did the math on how many 10" speakers I can put into a 4x10 cab without sawing more holes. It's 8 total due to clamshell isobaric loading. Ugly, yesss. But better low end response. Its good to see a bass speaker video. The eminence has a great distortion sound, the jensen smooth's distortion doesnt sound great out of the mix but compliments the guitar in the mix. That being said, I would would on mic placement and try different mics to tame the midrange just a little.
Thanks for making this video! About five years ago, I was toying with the idea of making a bass speaker cab, and wanted to hear some sound samples of different bass speakers, but as you mentioned, nobody made a deep dive video really going over bass speaker choices. Bass IR pack sounds cool!
I've had a custom cab made by Cathedral Cabinets loaded with 6x Celestion Pulse 10 and 2x Celestion Pulse 12. I feel like when you're hearing the speakers in solo that the Eminence sounds the most sexy and that the Celestion sounds a bit boring, but in context that Celestion sounds a lot more useful to me because its mids are voiced a bit lower, where you would want to scoop the guitars a bit anyways. Also, I play in an HM-2 style band where the 1-1,5kHz is oversaturated by the guitars by default so it makes sense to go with something that is more present around 700-900Hz. Great video btw and definitely check out the Pulse 12's, that low end is unmatched!
Well, I guess the Jensen/eminece work better if you wanna dängle through a mix. If you just care about a great lowend and leave the midgrind to the guitarplayers, the Celestion will do great.
Love the Eminence Speaker Guitar Pack, they really improved the sound of a lot of kemper profiles. I just bought a Bass so Bass IR Packs from you would be awesome.
Daaaaaamn!!! That sounded so good! But try the 12" bass speakers. They are nicely in the middle between a 10 and a 15 inch speaker. You get more woof and they are still more responsive than the 15". You get the clank over the horn anyways!
I'm using a 2x15 Mesa D4 cab. Went through 2 sets of factory speakers before switching to a pair of Eminence Speakers. I don't remember the model, as that was 10 years ago, but they sound amazing. Please do a Shootout with 15s
I would definitely be interested in a Bass IR pack. Hard to find them for Bass and your Guitar IR's are great so I would be grabbing the Bass Pack as well for sure.
Testing 12" bass speakers would be cool. The Celestion BN12-300S is not only a nice bass speaker, but it actually works great as a guitar speaker, too. Double the fun!
@@KohleAudioKult Trying to summarise it: I can't reach out my bass right now, I got the speaker just 2 weeks ago, I tested it with a guitar on a 1x12 at low volume in my tiny 1-room apartment and I plan to get materials to build a properly-sized bass cab when non-essential stores are reopened :D All sizes in this speaker series have some dangle to my ears, but weirdly enough I only heard the 12" being tested on guitar cabs.
I'm in the process of doing bass impulse responses. I need to get a flat power amp before releasing anything to the public. But running my Darkglass X Ultra into my daw with some IRs of my Mesa M9 Carbine into my Mesa 410 cab and it's absolutely beautiful. I'm gonna do some mic mixes and my Mesa 115 and hopefully I can get a decent Mesa full stack 410+115 IR pack.
I just got one Jensen punch 12 Zoll for my practice amp..a .caliber 50 ftom Mesa...great sound..bass sound out of a guitar amp ...why not, it works well !!!!! ;)
Have been trying to fit a lot in one cabinet in the end I had to go with two to get the "right" sound I am using. one 15" to not lose the bottom end and one 4x10" for the mid and high tones. because as a Bassist one have to move a lot of air to get the Sound/tone I´m locking for. was many years in the dream land that my equipment where just trash and needed to get more expensive gear.. but alas found freedom on sale for about 400 euros ha.. now if only I can find the right 10" speaker for my cab.... ... ...
Thanks for the video. I have the same TC cab and was thinking of changing it. I think the tone issue is from my class D amp (Aguilar Tonehammer) and I should get a more powerful classic head, like a Trace Elliot!
Thanks for doing this video, I have the celestion pulse 12 and haven't been happy with the tone for a while but I never figured it was the speaker until I heard this comparison. I swapped it out for a eminence and it sounds way better. I had done a frequency response of the celestion and what I originally thought was room modes was just the speaker. Eminence not only sounds better to my ears but it's backed by a much more even response (so much so I actually question if the celestion was a dud somehow)
Hell yeah! Would love to see some 12 inch in the future. I use a 1980 Music Man 412-B but it has Ashdown 12 inch speakers in it. I love the way bass sounds through 12s.
Great video. As a guitar player, we need good metal bass IR’s. A lot of us guitar players have a bass as well to put a track down. And it’s so hard to get dangle. You. Are that dangle provider. Where’d I sign up?
Super comparison! I had JUST ordered a Jensen Punch 8" speaker for putting in a little Ampeg. Then came upon your excellent work. Thankfully I really like the Punch in your demo, as you do, and immediately disliked the "Smooth". Hardly smooth.. Maybe "Crash" would be a more apt title. Thank you!
Getbajs i brallan vad bra! I think we as engineers have succumbed to just lining the bass because the bass players aren’t as full of opinions regarding thier tone as guitar players are. You have redeemed us from this Kohle! Well done!
The Celestion is the only one i kinda didn't care for, however in the right situation it might sound great! I liked the neo a lot more than i thought i would as well.
The eminence sounds best so far, more balanced, has a bit more bottom than the jensen punch. It sounds almost perfect. I never liked the neo cab I played, I think they sound thin and weird in the mids and high mids, and lack bottom. ( That might the cab construction material as well, but they were ampeg cabs.) My favorite cab ever is the svt610 hlf, classic series, these ampeg cabs have something, quite a punch in the low mids. I really loved the eden 4x10 I have played, too, they are awesome. But don't ask me what speakers are in these cabs!
Great Video! MarkBass are quite popular and they use B&C Woofers. Maybe you can get your hands on one of these. How about videos on different sized speakers? You cover 10’’ now but how about 8s, 12s and 15s?
Hey man! What a great video. The Eminence Legend was the best sounding speaker! It would be really nice if you would do the same type of video with 12 inch speakers also!
Bass speakers aren't supposed to add colour. If you want that RIC into a Marshall stack like Lemmy.. Go for it.. I have an active tone boost on my humbucker bass. Run parallel compression with a Muff Pi off ABY and a Yorkville xm50 and a monitor/subwoofer.
Hearing that sound reminds me I should play bass more often. And I'm a drummer... I think I prefer the Eminence speaker as well, it's just right for the dängle. Keep up the great work and dängle on! Grüße aus dem Norden der Republik! \m/
That video was soooooo helpful! Thank you sooo much Kristian! In my bass amp are two 8ohm 150 Watts speakers. And I find them a bit too deep, too dark ( a little bit like the Celestion pulse). I prefer clanky, bright bass sounds in Rock and Metal music. As the Jensen Punch fits exactly (10inch, 8 ohm, 150W), I am going to get a pair of those to put in my combo :-) And they are very affordable, too!
I liked all of the speakers except the smooth. I think that the Celestion has potential. Maybe it needs some tweaking of the amp, and the other two sounded fucking phenomenal!!! I would aboslutely love a bass IR pack. Also, since you're interested in going off the beaten path, have you ever thought about playing around with "exotic" microphones? I'm not saying like $6,000 mics or anything, but every IR pack I have is 421, sm57, Royer 121, etc. Who knows it might be cool...
Thanks first of all. Well, those microphones all work on guitars because they have a great midrange. I'm a huge fan of the 57. The most "generic" mic ever, but Hey! It just sounds great. But there are a few sleepers. Maybe you have seen that sE RNT a few times in my videos? But that's not really important in the end. I always try to come up with names for IRs that describe the sound. I'll rather name an IR: "Ballsy Supergrind" instead of: "V30 57 of axis, 121 on axis 50/50". you know!
@@KohleAudioKult Thanks for the fast reply. You know what my problem is? I use my eyes instead of my ears, haha. I like the idea of a descriptive name vs a literal name. By the way, the eminence pack is great. It is right on par with all of my high quality favorites.
Ir pack would be awesome. Never enough bass irs out there!. For me I am with you the eminence and the Jensen punch are my favorites the celestion is a good sounding speaker if you don't want to Klank it out. But the Jensen smooth for me is anything but
smoth sounds like shit. BP102 sound quite nice, but has low efficiency. I'm wondering about Delta 10, what is your opinion? Best (based on specs) of all like: Eminence, Celestion,Jensen or B&C looks Faital 10PR300 but it is too expensive just for tests :) I have package on Faital 15PR400 with horn tuned to 2.5kHz and it sound amazing, low, clear and lound in the same time but wanted something much bigger and stronger in term of watts that can hit 135dB for metal :D
I think that in the mix (which ultimately is the only thing that matters), the jensen punch and (surprisingly) the celestion sounds best. The eminence is also good, but I prefer the punch to it. I am now thinking about a custom 2x10 with a celestion and a jensen punch 🤣
That Jensen Punch is fire! 💪🏻 I'd have 2 suggestions for the next video: the FANE sovereign 10-300 and the Turbosound TS-10W300/8A (a budget speaker which i find would be interesting).Hail Dängle! 🤘🏻
@@KohleAudioKult The Fane is probably a Bass Speaker - at least i have an old Laney 30W Combo Bassamp with an 8 inch Fane Speaker in it. I recently picked up a mid 80s marshall 4x10 that sounds brittle and bad that I would like to be able to use as a lightweight portable alternative to a 4x12 for local shows. What 4, 10 inch speakers could do the job? Asking for guitar not bass. I love this channel! thanks
I LOVE the Eminence speaker sound!!!! Thanks for share this comparation. I Will put it on my 2x12 some day!!! I want to know, if possible, do you know what frecuency is configured for crossover between speakers and tweeter in your cab? Thanks again for the video!! 🤘🤘

Great video btw and definitely check out the Pulse 12's, that low end is unmatched!
Well, I guess the Jensen/eminece work better if you wanna dängle through a mix.
If you just care about a great lowend and leave the midgrind to the guitarplayers, the Celestion will do great.
Fantastic video, Kristian. It would have been great to see how you switched the speakers for each test. Can you tell us anything about it?
Love the Eminence Speaker Guitar Pack, they really improved the sound of a lot of kemper profiles. I just bought a Bass so Bass IR Packs from you would be awesome.
Thank you so much. I almost bought a Pulse. Definitely not what I'm looking for.
Really In Flames sounding jam session at the beginning. Love it. They're my favorite band
Daaaaaamn!!! That sounded so good! But try the 12" bass speakers. They are nicely in the middle between a 10 and a 15 inch speaker. You get more woof and they are still more responsive than the 15". You get the clank over the horn anyways!
This channel is way to good!
Please, debunk the myth about speaker damage when using bass cabinets with guitar and vice-versa.
Noted! Thanks
Great vid! Eminence is the winner for me! You can literally whistle along to the Jensen smooth high mid peak! hahaha! Awesome! Thanks!
Testing 12" bass speakers would be cool. The Celestion BN12-300S is not only a nice bass speaker, but it actually works great as a guitar speaker, too. Double the fun!
12“ would be interesting, yes!
Are you using it in a guitar cab?
@@KohleAudioKult Trying to summarise it: I can't reach out my bass right now, I got the speaker just 2 weeks ago, I tested it with a guitar on a 1x12 at low volume in my tiny 1-room apartment and I plan to get materials to build a properly-sized bass cab when non-essential stores are reopened :D
All sizes in this speaker series have some dangle to my ears, but weirdly enough I only heard the 12" being tested on guitar cabs.
You play your instruments so well it's so awesome to watch you play.
Keep it metal brother, 2021 is all yours my bro 🤘😝
Great as expected! My favourite is the Eminence speaker by far! Waiting for the Bass Ir Pack!
Great job as always, Kristian! Also, my granny loves you now!
🍺❤️😜
That Trace Elliot amp was often paired with 10” Celestions from the factory.
Goofy comments aside, fantastic video on a subject not touched on often. Super helpful.
Things that dangle like to be touched upon.
By the way, I've been enjoying your channel's content as well
Keep up the good work.
I'm glad I've found this video! I'm currently contemplating the changing of my bass amp speaker... ;)
oooh definitely do 12" and 15", the best bass tone i ever got was from a 12" swr cab
Those SWR cabs are great. I need to check what’s in there.
Awesome video! The Eminence and Punch are freakin' nice.
Hell yeah! Would love to see some 12 inch in the future. I use a 1980 Music Man 412-B but it has Ashdown 12 inch speakers in it. I love the way bass sounds through 12s.
Looks like a lot of people wanna hear 12“s
Great video. As a guitar player, we need good metal bass IR’s. A lot of us guitar players have a bass as well to put a track down. And it’s so hard to get dangle. You. Are that dangle provider. Where’d I sign up?
Love the BP102, looking forward for the IRs!
Great video, as usual! I am astonished there are so few good videos about bass guitar speakers on youtube. Keep 'em coming! Hälsningar från Sverige.
Well done!
Haha! Tack ska du ha! I agree that the bassworld is less rotten than the guitarworld!
YES IT'S DANGLE TIME AGAIN!
LETS GOOO
That was a very interesting comparison. Thank you, and God bless you!
This might be the video with most DÄNGLE all over youtube. Great video! 👍
( That might the cab construction material as well, but they were ampeg cabs.)
My favorite cab ever is the svt610 hlf, classic series, these ampeg cabs have something, quite a punch in the low mids.
Dängle on...should be on a T-shirt :)
Would you make a video about monitoring? The studio monitors, room treatment etc.
Just had an idea about room acoustics today. So yeah! Sooner or later.
At last! Always something new & interesting, Kohle :)
And you have the first buyer of your bass IR pack as well :)
Thanks for tat great video very helpfull in the making choice process ! Maybe a demo with the Emminence kappa pro 10 and the Webber 10 FL !
Viel Spaß!
Yeah the tone is great. But man, THAT BASS PLAYING is really good!!!!
Thank you for finally doing this! 🤘🏼
You're welcome!
But the Jensen smooth for me is anything but
I just released a pack with Orange and Eminence. Here is the video:
th-cam.com/video/8_frCffhJ7Q/w-d-xo.html
great vid! wouldnt mind if you do 15 inch speakers as well
the best comparison ever. punch sounds good. Have tried faital pro speakers?
smoth sounds like shit. BP102 sound quite nice, but has low efficiency. I'm wondering about Delta 10, what is your opinion? Best (based on specs) of all like: Eminence, Celestion,Jensen or B&C looks Faital 10PR300 but it is too expensive just for tests :)
I have package on Faital 15PR400 with horn tuned to 2.5kHz and it sound amazing, low, clear and lound in the same time but wanted something much bigger and stronger in term of watts that can hit 135dB for metal :D
I think that in the mix (which ultimately is the only thing that matters), the jensen punch and (surprisingly) the celestion sounds best. The eminence is also good, but I prefer the punch to it. I am now thinking about a custom 2x10 with a celestion and a jensen punch 🤣
Such a great channel. Keep killing it!
That Jensen Punch is fire! 💪🏻 I'd have 2 suggestions for the next video: the FANE sovereign 10-300 and the Turbosound TS-10W300/8A (a budget speaker which i find would be interesting).Hail Dängle! 🤘🏻
Those are both bass speakers I assume?
Didn’t even know Fane were doing bass speakers. Or are those PA speakers?
@@KohleAudioKult The Fane is probably a Bass Speaker - at least i have an old Laney 30W Combo Bassamp with an 8 inch Fane Speaker in it. About the Turbosound - i'm not so sure, i know Turbosound only from their PA-Systems - but that thing is cheap and maybe worth a try 🤷🏼♂️ Both speakers are available at the big T
Oh, the Fane is really a bass speaker: www.fane-international.com/view-product/SOVEREIGN-10-300 and the Turbosound is indeed a PA speaker: www.turbosound.com/product.html?modelCode=P0E4N but worth a try nonetheless at a whopping 59€ 😉
I recently picked up a mid 80s marshall 4x10 that sounds brittle and bad that I would like to be able to use as a lightweight portable alternative to a 4x12 for local shows. What 4, 10 inch speakers could do the job? Asking for guitar not bass. I love this channel! thanks
The bass player from Overkill, DD Verni used old ADA equipment at one point. Im not sure what he uses now though.
Like the Gothenburg flavor to the opening demo track.
I LOVE the Eminence speaker sound!!!! Thanks for share this comparation. I Will put it on my 2x12 some day!!!
I want to know, if possible, do you know what frecuency is configured for crossover between speakers and tweeter in your cab?
Thanks again for the video!! 🤘🤘
Your videos are always so good!
Thanks man! Spread the word!
