    From what I have researched, one of the main differences between gouache and poster colors is that gouache is usually created from more lightfast pigments, therefore being able to last long and can be displayed, while poster colors are made from poor lightfast pigments because they are not meant to last long. Their purpose is to be preserved by means of taking a print copy of it or by taking a picture and be manufactured like how typical posters or fliers are printed.
    Hope this helps.

      Wouldn't a coat of varnish give them some lightfastness?

    I thought they were the same! But the texture of poster color looks more watery but still very pigmented, I would love to try it one day. Both paintings at the end look really good at the end! I guess it all depends on what texture you like working with the most ~~

      @@EarlsArt Ok watched it twice in regular time and I am still torn between which one, I really like both. :) But isn't gouache technically poster paints? They used to use them mainly for illustration pieces on posters. As for video suggestions, would love to see another comparison video, maybe a cheap versus more higher-end but on a different medium?

    Poster/tempera or what they call gouache are pretty the same. The main difference is their durability or lightfastness. Gouache is more durable but when it comes to availability and price if you are looking for a cheap and available you can go with postercolors especially for beginners.

      As an artist, not having expensive materials doesnt mean you cant do as much as those who have expensive materials. At the end of the day your skills is more important and does not depend oh how cheap/expensive materials you own. Btw nice artwork.Keep on inspiring❤

    I think gouache is better because in poster color is the color is blended with other color or water on paper, it's a bit blurry but for gouache is clearer and nicer. Another reason is that when poster colors are dry, they seem rough and less nice but gouache looks smooth and nicer. I can see it on the swatches.

      They are not. They are different in pigmentation, binder, additives, pigment size and single/multiple pigment ratio. Also, nowadays many renown gouache brands have high quality lightfast artist gouache, while postercolors don't really (i think there's a japanese brand that has an artist line, but not sure).
      Though, i admit it depends highly on the brand AND the line (some companies have 4 different Gouache quality lines). Not to mention, it depends on the artist, if and how much those differences even matter.

    • @meia1855
      @meia1855 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Back then, gouache used to be the better quality version because it's similar to watercolor pigments, just added with white(chalk or something). But nowadays, there are many options for gouache unlike poster paints which is still seen as kids/budget paint.
      Usage is still practically the same though from my personal experience, poster paint doesnt reactivate as easily as gouache does. Most of the old anime backgrounds are painted using poster paints.
