    UPDATE - Fractal Torrent fan hub issue details - th-cam.com/video/ytxtbLou978/w-d-xo.html
    Hopefully this gets views. We're always nervous about view count on videos that positively review a product; sadly, they tend to underperform versus the average, but the Fractal Torrent really deserves the recognition and renown. It's good.

    This is very obviously a case that had some engineering put into it. Clearly they started with an idea of great airflow, and worked around it to make it also look good. I like when functionality doesn't come as an afterthought.

    • @spartan456
      @spartan456 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've been using Fractal Design cases for years, I use them in all custom builds for clients and I also use them personally. 12 years ago I picked up the Arc Midi R2, and back then this could've for sure been considered the Torrent of that era. It didn't look very good, but it was a monolithic rectangle designed with airflow in mind and lots of utility. The main reason I purchased it was to have a case with good airflow, yet loads of utility. It was the only case I could find that allowed the option of installing EIGHT internal drives, and this WASN'T including the 2.5" mounting slots in the cable management space.
      Fast forward to the Torrent, and it is a straight upgrade from that rickety Arc Midi R2. The Full size variant sports the option of installing 2 3.5" drives, along with 4 2.5" drives, all neatly located in the cable management space. This is a far cry from the massive storage expandability offered by the Arc Midi, but these days primary storage is often integrated into the motherboard as NVME, with additional bays serving as supplemental storage, so it makes sense.
      It is hands down the best case I've ever built in, it looks fantastic, and it is guaranteed to keep everything inside nice and cool. I often do builds for clients around the Torrent if their budget permits it, and most of the time it does. It is such a nice case to build in due to how much room there is. Even the Compact, which is significantly smaller, is still a dream to build in.

    Can we stop for a moment and give Fractal some appreciation for making the supports for the nylon mesh match up with the ribs in the front panel of the case, so that it reduces the amount of airflow blocked by the mesh support? Just a nice little attention to detail bit there.
    I'm not in the market for a new case right now, but if I were, this would definitely get consideration. Well done, Fractal.

    • @lemonhuehue

      Agreed, I've always been a fan of Fractal's mesh filters, even if some people avoid using them for increased airflow. I just like the idea of having blocked out majority of the dust and reducing the amount of dusting I need to do, especially when my case is on the floor.

      Same. I've long thought modern cases with open tops seemed ill suited for air cooled CPUs, for the reasons stated in this review. Moving air directly above the CPU cooler (whether in or out) doesn't make sense. And I prefer air cooling, because of the greater reliability, longevity, and cost-effectiveness while barely-if-at-all compromising on performance. This case absolutely nails the needs of air cooling, in addition to being a perfectly good design for water cooling as well, with some limitations.

    • @RedundancyDept
      @RedundancyDept 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Your point is well taken, but $50 seems like a mild overstatement. Cheaper cases often come with 2-3 fans, so this case only nets you 2-3 more. You can buy a 5-pack of Arctic P14s for like $35. I think they cost about $10 individually.
      The Torrent does look like a nice case, though, and $200 certainly isn't a bad investment given that you can reuse cases for multiple builds. Glad to see a return to top-mounted PSUs, which IMO were always unfairly derided. Bottom mounting has its downsides too; for example, I'm not thrilled about putting the intake for my most important component right up against a carpeted floor. Also a modular PSU on the bottom can crowd out bottom intake fans, even in cases that are explicitly designed to accommodate them (like the Define R5). Fractal obviously came to a similar conclusion in designing the Torrent.
      Shame that the Torrent doesn't have more space for HDDs.

    I love the styling on this case, and the design overall is really good. I, however, have invested a lot into my current PC in regards to fans and cooling. 2xLL140s, 3xLL120s, 280mm AiO. I'd love to see this case with a fanless version at a reduced price. Even with my fan composition, it would definitely cool better than my current Fractal Meshify C.

    Okay since fractal has been the gold standard for cases since the R4, seeing them do 180s will likely mean 180s will become standard now. Same way the meshify caused a wave of mesh front cases with transparent side panels and how the node 202 caused console shaped itx cases.

    I bought the case after the review, especially if the next graphics cards produce more waste heat I think this will be one of the best cases. I would also like to point out the quality of the review, which is exceptional. One of the few points that were criticized about the quality was the edge in front of the upper element, which also does not fit perfectly on my case. Also, the info that the front fans must be disassembled to remove the lower tray. I had forgotten this detail and had to disassemble them again and thought, ah shit, that's what steve meant. This depth that comes only through years of experience and also the transfer for less experienced builders. Really terrific. And as a bonus even accommodating if you have ordered something in the store and made a mistake.
    I wish the team that it continues to have much success in the future.

    This is one of the innovative cases I've seen in a long time, and I dig the Dell Precision-y workstation look on the front. Might be time to finally retire the ancient 650D. Also never stop the unsolicited Gigabyte bashing it never will get old. Thanks Steve.

    Yay for Fractal for winning Steve over!
    As someone that has used a Define R4, Define R6, and currently using a Meshify 2 XL (and the R6 reused as a NAS build), I've always liked Fractal cases and I love their expansion into newer designs. It's a shame that the Torrent isn't really a watercooling-optimised case otherwise I'd get one...
